Turkey: Six Revolutionary Prisoners Still on Hunger Strike Against “Well” Prisons

For many weeks, six revolutionary prisoners have been on hunger strike in Turkey to denounce “well” type prisons. They are based on a very strict solitary confinement regime and harsh prison conditions for prisoners. They owe their name to the fact that the windows, tightly grilled, look out onto a walled space, and the short daily walk is in a narrow space surrounded by high walls. On July 14, many initiatives of solidarity with these prisoners were organized in Greece, Holland, France and Belgium.

  1. Serkan Onur Yılmaz has been on indefinite hunger strike in Bolu F-type prison for 255 days.
  2. Mithat Öztürk has been on indefinite hunger strike in Sincan No. 2 Maximum Security Prison for 160 days.
  3. Ali Aracı, a member of Grup Yorum, has been on indefinite hunger strike in Sincan No. 1 Maximum Security Prison for 155 days.
  4. Ayberk Demirdöğen has been on indefinite hunger strike in Kırıkkale F-type prison for 134 days.
  5. Fikret Akar has been on indefinite hunger strike at Çorlu Karatepe High Security Prison for 114 days.
  6. Ümit Çobanoğlu has been on indefinite hunger strike in Antalya High Security Prison for 55 days.

A century-old hypothesis that Betelgeuse, the 10th brightest star in our night sky, is orbited by a very close companion star was proved true by a team of astrophysicists led by a scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. The research published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters in the paper “Probable Direct […]

Happy birthday to #astronomer Vera Rubin (neé Cooper, ‘28-‘16) & her discovery that angular motion of galaxies deviates from predictions, 1st evidence for dark matter, now known as 5x as common as matter & the stuff which dictates dynamics of galaxies & evolution of our universe! The Nobel committee waited 3 years after she died to reward another for the theory of dark matter.

post MSc very difficult being at home watching physicist husband going to work to pursue what he loved. He insisted she return to grad school. Admitted to Georgetown at 23, expecting 2nd child. Writing her thesis, advisor Heyden got her in contact with #physicist George Gamow, who worked at nearby APL & adjunct at George Washington U who took her on as a student (PhD ‘54).

While 4 kids were young, she taught at Georgetown before gaining a position at Carnegie’s Dept of Terrestrial Magnetism.🧵

1st woman to use Palomar Observatory in ‘65, solved lack of washrooms by cutting out a paper skirt & pasting it to the little man icon. With instrument maker Kent Ford she made most sensitive spectrometer of the day using his new magnetically focused image tube- allowing them to study small regions of galaxies like Andromeda, returning to her interest in galaxy dynamics. Since mass is clustered in centre, nearer objects should go faster but they gathered dozens of rotation curves for galaxies &🧵

Great write up & ❤️ the print too! As well as her assumptions:
She championed #womenInSTEM writing, “I live and work under 3 basic assumptions. 1: There is no problem in science that can be solved by a man that cannot be solved by a woman. 2: Worldwide, half of all brains are in women. 3: We all need permission to do science, but, for reasons that are deeply ingrained in history, this permission is more often given to men than to women.”
Thanks a lot for sharing! 🙂

As Rachel Reeves seeks to deregulate financial services and return it the more light-touch 'principles-based' regime of the preceded the Global Financial Crisis of 2008... she might heed the worlds of Hector Sants (head of the Financial Services Authority from 2007-2012):

'a principles-based approach does not work with individuals who have no principles'.

Being in tech and having a single modicum of critical thinking is just screaming "this isn't what LLMs are designed for" over and over. Meanwhile people are shoving a bunch of word predictors into critical decision making processes because a glorified used car salesmen told them it would fix all their problems.

the order of redirections is significant

In bash, if you put:

ls /Users/*/.ssh/id_rsa 2>&1 > rsa-keys.log

...you're redirecting stderr to the stdout's destination while stdout is still sending output to the screen. So any permission errors encountered will go to the screen, not to rsa-keys.log.

From the bash manpage:

==================

Note that the order of redirections is significant. For example, the command

   ls > dirlist 2>&1

directs both standard output and standard error to the file dirlist, while the command
   ls 2>&1 > dirlist

directs only the standard output to file dirlist, because the standard error was duplicated from the standard output before the standard output was redirected to dirlist.

==================

Commands given to the shell are evaluated and processed in a specific order and fashion, and this is one quirk of that that many people are unaware of.

According to a motion the Electronic Frontier Foundation filed in Sacramento Superior Court last week, Nguyen and Decker are only two of more than 33,000 Sacramento-area people who have been flagged to the sheriff’s department by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, the electricity provider for the region. SMUD called the customers out for using what it and department investigators said were suspiciously high amounts of electricity indicative of illegal cannabis farming.
