🧠 Destructive humor can be a subtle, invisible weapon that chips away at others' self-esteem. When used to belittle or mock, it undermines confidence and can deepen feelings of insecurity.

In relationships affected by narcissistic dynamics, such humor often masks deeper control and manipulation motives. Recognizing this pattern is key to protecting your mental well-being and setting healthy boundaries.

Remember: humor should uplift, not undermine. If you or someone you know experiences this, seeking support can help rebuild self-worth and resilience. 💪✨ #NarcissisticAbuse #MentalHealthAwareness #SelfEsteemMatters

In “The Red Devil” a play written by Antoine Rault there is a conversation between Colbert (Minister of Finance under Louis XIV) and Mazarin. The contents of this exchange have gone into the annals of history > Colbert: “When trying to find money, there is always a moment when messing about is no longer enough. Please, Lord High Treasurer, tell me how one can manage to spend more when already up to one’s neck in debt…” -Mazarin: “When you are a simple mortal, of course, and swamped in debt, you are sent to prison but the State… well the State is a different kettle of fish. The State cannot be thrown in prison. And so the debt increases! Every State does that.” Colbert: “Oh really? Is that what you think? However, we need money and how can you find any when you’ve already devised every imaginable tax?” -Mazarin: “We create others”. Colbert: “We can’t tax the poor more than we do already.” -Mazarin: “Yes, that’s true.” Colbert: «So, what about the rich?» -Mazarin: «We can’t tax the rich either. They would stop spending. A rich person who spends feeds hundreds of poor people». Colbert: “So, what should we do?” -Mazarin: “Colbert, your reasoning is completely illogical! Lots of people are neither one thing nor the other, neither poor, nor rich… French people work in the hope of becoming rich but dreading being poor! Those are the people we should be taxing, more and more! They are the ones! The more you take from them, the more they work to make up for it… That well never runs dry.”

is there any way to put my extra memory to use to play av1 files if my cpu overloads? Debian 12.11

debian 12.11

system memory size: 31GiB, 2 15.5 GiB cards

cpu: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz, version: 6.142.9, size: 3268MHz, capacity: 3500MHz, width: 64 bits

no graphics card whatsoever

computer can play h.265 and equivalent without troubles, provided video file is no higher than 1080 p.

Computer can play av1 files no higher than 1080 p only if I shut every other application down. If for example I run a browser and an av1 file with either mpv or vlc, system shuts down.

Can I put all that memory to use and avoid overloading the cpu?

ETA: temperature seems to be the reason why this machine shuts down. Fan is ok, not too much dust, it needs a re-paste

I had an i5-7200u equipped laptop and I could do AV1 playback, not well but it didn't do what you described.

Also is it maxing out memory or cpu? I would check btop during playback. Look at CPU usage, memory usage and temps while doing so and report here.

Edit: Something is definitely wrong with your machine, that is abnormal behavior. Maybe it's overheating, maybe it's trying to do some sort of gpu decode and has no idea what to do with it as it doesn't support it. Can you check what encoder mpv is using? I would assume it would failback to CPU.

Travelling the world Roxette live

Considering that Roxette is one of Scandinavia's most successful acts ever, it's about time a documentary on their phenomenal career sees the light of day. And considering that the group played in front of 1.5 million people in 46 countries during their sensational comeback tour 2011-2012, it's about time for a concert film that shows where this magnificently rejuvenated group stands today.

Who left the “gates” between Israel and Gaza unguarded and easily opened by Hamas and others on Oct. 7, and Why ?

Can anyone really believe that if #Israel can track and assassinate leaders of #Hamas, #Hezbollah, #Iran, and other enemies around the world with ease, or plant explosives in pagers which it then has distributed to its enemies, or eliminate journalists quickly, that it somehow failed to anticipate and have intelligence about a well planned, massive and and eminent attack against Israel?

An Israeli military investigation released in 2025 would dupe us into believing that it was a 'complete failure' to protect civilians and anticipate attack and that Israel was “tricked” by Hamas.

It is more likely the other way around, given long time reported clandestine Israeli funding for Hamas as a means of creating disunity in the Palestinian political system. In addition, by funding an “enemy” Netanyahu always has the threat of Hama to use as a political tool to keep himself in power. Not to mention the Israeli operatives who infiltrated the ranks of Hamas. Hamas has not and is still not demanding the recognition of the State of Palestine and compliance with the decision of the International Court of Justice that Israel and its settles vacate Palestine. Why not ?

Lobbing ineffective missiles indiscriminately by Hamas is a violation of International Law, thus depriving Hamas of much world support, and providing a “justified” more destructive response from Israel. Hamas, for whatever reason, was totally wrong to think it could participate in a massacre without Gazans and all Palestinians paying the gruesome price. and total disregard for International Law, losing world support for its “resistance” against The Occupation.

Intelligence failure? This Israel-Gaza border is the most surveilled, observed, and armed in the world. Was this in essence a " #falseflag " attack promoted by the leaders of Israel in order to justify the seizure of Palestine?

Given how power crazy Netanyahu is, changing laws to escape being tried for corruption, with his long running clandestine support for Hamas to provide him a political foil, and with the over thee edge extreme mind set of the fundamentalist Zionist regime he leads, is it not plausible that the border was left unguarded on purpose? Anyone who would retaliate for the murder of a thousand and a quarter innocents with the murder of more than seventy thousand, inflict life longs scars on a million children, reduce Gaza to rubble, and try to annex the West Bank and East Jerusalem is certainly capable of such.

ON Dec. 8, 2021 the Associated Press reported that
"Israel on Tuesday announced the completion of an enhanced security barrier around the Gaza Strip designed to prevent militants from sneaking into the country."

"The 65-kilometer (40-mile) barrier includes radar systems, maritime sensors and a network of underground sensors to detect militant tunnels. Existing fencing was replaced with a 6-meter-high (6.5-yard-high) “smart fence” with sensors and cameras."

"Defense Minister Benny Gantz announced the completion of the barrier after more than three years of construction, saying it places an “iron wall” between Hamas and residents of southern Israel."

As one retired Israeli Army Commander wrote, “Something here doesn't work out for me!!! I was the commander of the Kerem Shalom (Rafih) section, I was in charge of the accumulation section, I know the fence of the system very well, I know how the army works there.

The fence alerts according to 3 degrees of pressure. There are forces 24/7 that are responsible for arriving in a few minutes, if not seconds to the point where there is an alert in the fence. The observers are champions of identification. They don’t miss. They recognize movement before it even approached an obstacle-day and night. So how does a Palestinian tractor move towards the fence without anyone reacting to it? How did the tractor manage to rope a fence for a long hour and open access to Israel without anyone reacting to it? How did all this happen under our noses? Where did the whole military brigade disappear ? Where were all the reserve battalions? Where did thousands of soldiers disappear??? Someone here needs to provide some explanations!

If we believe that this Hamas surprise attack was an intelligence failure, it may be our own intelligence which is failing us.

pst hey, just because people are using AI features doesn't mean they like them or chose them. Google, Microsoft, and Meta all know how to growth-hack features with UI tricks and they are doing it **aggressively** with their AI garbage. then they produce metrics that say "wow! look! people are using AI!!" so they can justify to Wall St. wasting tens of billions of dollars on this stuff.
in reply to Peter

if users wanted it, they would go find it, but over and over again they do **not** go find it. no one is buying "AI" laptops, no one is using Apple's AI features, no one wants Clippy Pro to write e-mails for them. to the extent people use AI, it's to do fraud and for some niche tasks like some coding, proof reading, etc. this is not enough to justify $800bn in capex! so they have to growth-hack.

Outstripping our capacity for social logistics is really the core issue exacerbating every other problem we've got-- we can't relate to each other very well in populations this large, or track the consequences of our social behaviors, and our development of social media should have been urgently geared to brace against that. Instead the focus has been ad revenue which means our tech has only been driving in increasingly depraved directions packed with lies, which ain't helping. We're drowning in noise.

Letter From Jakhi McCray to the Movement abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/205…

Letter From Jakhi McCray to the Movement

It has been one month since the NYPD and the U.S. government came after me, accusing me of setting fire to police vehicles belonging to the 83rd precinct in Brooklyn. According to them, $800,000 worth of damage was done and the charred remains of the vehicles represented a direct attack on the police.

Today, July 21st, I walked into the 83rd precinct and turned myself in.

There’s a real chance that I won’t see the outside of a cell for years, but I make this choice clear of mind and, in a naive way, hopeful. It’s a hope that comes from feeling loved and supported by my friends, my family, and my comrades that have rallied in support of me in wake of the accusations. It’s a feeling that I cherish and will hold on to in the, now uncertain timeline of my life.

I’m 21 years old and I know it’s normal to be unsure about life and the world, but I want to thank you -whether l know you or you’re just meeting me for the first time now- forgiving me some comfort in all this.

My charge comes with a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20. The federal government has labeled me “armed and dangerous” and blasted a $30,000 bounty for my capture, which Zionist and white supremacist news outlets have happily supported in their racist doxxing and smear campaign against me.

My home has been raided alongside two other addresses in New York City, and my little siblings had assault rifles brandished at them as they were harassed and forced outside.

I’m not, nor was I ever, scared. This scare tactic is nothing compared to other black people that are beaten and/or murdered, and their names being dragged through the mud as the media does damage control for the officers that did it. It’s not new to Palestinians and Arabs that are being assassinated, deported, and harassed. I’ve met immigrants that live under daily paranoia, not knowing whether or not ICE goons will bust through their doors and kidnap their families.

I’ve been arrested 12 times before this, and doxxed and lied about by fascist press and police officers alike. I’ve seen friends and comrades lose relationships, homes, and jobs because of their refusal to be responsible for the genocide in Palestine and the kidnapping of migrants.

The SCC61, the CUNY8, the Prarieland1 1, the 2020 prsioners, Tarek Barzouk, Leqaa Kordia-all just a few current examples of the the government’s attempt to regain control. The use of COINTELPRO and its domestic warfare campaign that left hundreds of dead and imprisoned revolutionaries throughout the 20th century and now has caused a memory crater in our movement, where we don’t know to how to handle the brutality of State repression.

Repression is the State trying to call our bluff. It is intense because it shows itself when our potential to disrupt genocides and capital becomes too grand to ignore. Millions of people, whether they consider themselves revolutionaries or not, that participated in the encampments, the anti-ICE street rebellions, and the George Floyd Uprising have helped create a social crisis in the last five years that continues to bring in millions more and fuel the need for liberation.

The constant effort it takes the State to oppress us is not manageable. It is already breaking, with the funding and hiring disasters in federal agencies, the infighting between the Trump administration and his base, and the complete political catastrophe over Israel.

The harshness of the State’s eye on our movement is nothing more than a defensive reaction, a mask from their fear. This is as much of a make or break moment for them as it is for us. If we come out of this with our solidarity and our infrastructure intact, it is a monumental win for our communities and a devastation to our enemies.

Our greatest strength is each other-that we are not just coworkers maintaining appearances for the duration of a shift. We are comrades, and with that comes a promise to love, defend, and fight for one another. Because you are my comrades, I hold this promise towards all of you.

I don’t know what will happen now, but I do know that I will never stop fighting and I will do my best wherever I find myself to be.

With love and solidarity, Jakhi

I was talking to someone yesterday (let's call them A) and they had another "AI" experience, I thought might happen but hadn't heard of before.

They were interacting with an organization and upon asking a specific thing got a very specific answer. Weeks later that organization claimed it had never said what they said and when A showed the email as proof the defense was: Oh yeah, we're an international organization and it's busy right now so the person who sent the original mail probably had an LLM write it that made shit up. It literally ended with: "Let's just blame the robot ;)".

(Edit: I did read the email and it did not read like something an LLM wrote. I think we see "LLM did it" emerging as a way to cover up mistakes.)

LLMs as diffusors for responsibility in corporate environments was quite obviously gonna be a key sales pitch, but it was new to me that people would be using those lines in direct communication.

As a fighting game fan, this one shows promise. The devs are the Cannon brothers. They are the guys that founded Evo, the biggest fighting game event. They also created and freely licensed rollback netcode, the gold standard for fighting game netcode. the core of the game will likely be excellent. The f2p model hasn't really been done at this level in fighting games. Most games are sold at full price and they sell costumes and characters as dlc. I'm hoping this game will get more people to try fighting games and hopefully it doesn't become a loot box simulator.
