I'm on a bit of a kick of watching large corporate films and teasing out where the talent of the people they hire show through, and seeing how the corporate bullshit has taken over more and more.
I liked Maleficent a lot when it came out, and honestly...it holds up, probably better than it did before, in the context of all the "live action remake" bullshit today. In particular, I remember my main criticism of Maleficent at the time was how bloomy it was, how everything looked so bright and saturated. Well, now, it seems like every movie that comes out is even more so, to the extent that this film looks tastefully reasonable in comparison.
Unfortunately, its messaging around feminine power and the emphasis on (found) familial love over romantic love has been so oversaturated by #Disney in particular since then that it feels less impactful in a modern context, although I'd say it's a lot more genuine in Maleficent than the strictly corporate attempts made today. I don't think Disney would ever have another clear rape metaphor in a film, and I don't think anyone but Angelina Jolie could have carried the whole narrative as convincingly.
Also, the original Sleeping Beauty was 100% corporate trash even back in 1950-whatever. The creativity and theme reclamation of Maleficent is a proper rehabilitation of it, probably the only one that any of these corps have managed to achieve in all these horrendous attempts.
It's a shame that the film only received middling reception when it came out. I think if critics could see the state of things today, they might have chosen to emphasize these aspects. Or on the other hand, they might have panned it even more as a warning against Disney and other corporations taking it as a template for their own bastardization.
Because modern audiences simply can't make that distinction: If you give them a movie, they can't sit down and say, "Here, the writers and actors, artists and set designers were allowed to create a piece of an amazing movie; and here's where the corporation stuffed its fingers right in there and ruined it." There's actually a lot to be enjoyed in these movies — and really, most corporate shit — if you are able to make that separation; and you can also gain insight into why there's been barely a single good movie released anywhere in the west in half a decade.

Apparently that new Hyrule Warriors game is actually canon to the breath of the wild/tears of the kingdom continuity (the other warriors games aren't canon). Ugh. I really don't like the way Nintendo has handled the Zelda story recently. That's why I'm really not getting my hopes up for the movie either.
Honestly, I think it's best if Nintendo just retcons BoTW and ToTK into their own bizzaro world timeline where Hyrule has a completely different history because I don't know how they can connect those games with the rest of the series. Even the idea that the Zonai backstory is actually a re-founding of Hyrule sounds really dumb because if it is, then they would outright state it in game.
@xianc78 in the official timeline those games are off on their own so that's practically already how it is. It seemed like they were going to connect it somehow with TotK with the imprisoning war, only for it to be a completely different event with the same name that they're now making a canon warriors game for because TotK does a shit job with explaining it where every single champion spirit tells you the EXACT SAME STORY. I don't understand the thought process if it is anything other than wanting to just do whatever they think is cool and still naming things the same and putting in tons of callbacks not because they have any relevance, but for empty fan service.
There are just so many more inconsistencies, plot holes, and completely missing pieces than the rest of the series. People say that it's just Zelda and they have never cared about any of this stuff, but I think those people really haven't been paying attention.
And yeah the refounding thing is really stupid because we're supposed to believe that the Zora have direct knowledge of Ruto from Ocarina of Time, but when the Zonai come to found Hyrule everybody believes it is the first time. Like you said, they never say it is a refounding, they say it is THE founding of Hyrule. It could be a retelling of it and in some ways it does feel that way, but all of the people's names are completely mixed up. People just hand wave it and say stuff got jumbled over time or whatever, but if that's the case then this is the true story and the entire rest of the timeline is invalidated because we actually see all of it play out and talk to the ghosts of people who were there.
I think the only solution is to say it is completely on its own. A totally separate timeline with its own lore and its own mechanics as far as stuff like the goddesses and the triforce.
I think Nintendo had so many huge and awesome opportunities to connect botw/totk to the rest of the timeline but instead they decided to just grab random stuff from everywhere and shove it in to one game without thinking about it. The sky islands could have linked to skyward sword, the darkness stuff is straight from twilight princess, the imprisoning war is an obvious ocarina/alltp callback, and of course there is the whole great flood theory from wind waker. They just didn't capitalize on ANY of it, nor did they build on anything from botw. It's so frustrating!

Yeah they could just say that it's a timeline created from the time travel shenanigans from Skyward Sword (they don't even need to explain it; it's a better explanation than what we have now) or it could be a completely alternate universe that is similar to the regular Hyrule but with some major differences (kind of like Lorule or Termina but still keeping the name "Hyrule").

I've said it before that if they wanted to make an open world Zelda, they could've made it take place after Zelda II because the Hyrule in Zelda II is huge and the series never continued chronologically after that game. I always wanted to see what happened after Zelda II because Hyrule was in declined and it's future seemed uncertain, but I guess they didn't want to do that because they couldn't include some of the races that were featured in OOT and became Zelda staples like the Sea Zoras and the Gorons.

Today in Labor History August 1, 1917: IWW organizer Frank Little was lynched in Butte, Montana. Little was a Cherokee miner and member of the IWW. He went to Butte during the Speculator Mine strike to help organize the miners. Little had previously helped organize oil workers, timber workers and migrant farm workers in California. He had participated in free speech fights in Missoula, Spokane and Fresno, and helped pioneer many of the passive resistance techniques later used by the Civil Rights movement. He was also an anti-war activist, calling U.S. soldiers “Uncle Sam’s scabs in uniforms.” On August 1, 1917, vigilantes broke into the boarding house where he was staying. They dragged him through the streets while tied to the back of a car and then hanged him from a railroad trestle.
