A second mass grave of Irish immigrant railroad workers has been uncovered in Pennsylvania – victims of cholera, violence, and anti-immigrant hate in 1832.

Their story is finally being unearthed. theconversation.com/historian-…

Windows isn't an option for me either for the last 20 years or so.

I refurbish and sell computers, specializing in ThinkPad laptops. Some of my customers want Windows, so I offer both that and Linux as Operating System options.

My every day carry laptop has Linux (Devuan) with an Intel seventh gen processor in a ThinkPad X270 laptop. Good series!

Teachers might be some of the most retarded humans on the planet. I don't know if anybody remembers hooked on phonics, but my mom started that with me around 3. By third grade, I was testing for the GATE program (that's some weird shit) while reading and comprehending at a sophomore in college level. I'm no genius, I just know how to learn anything

Go against the grain. The majority of the world is dumb and they want to keep you dumb with them.

_WAR! Visa & Mastercard BAN Video Games After FEMINIST OUTRAGE, But NEW LAW COULD STOP THIS_

What's next? Payment processors banning pro-abortion videos over Christian outrage?

Your outrage does not justify banning whatever does not actually directly violate the rights of others. If it did, then outrage over such bannings would justify the banning of those who use their outrage to justify banning what they disapprove of.

Author complains that everybody wants TLDR, nobody cares about "depth". Which is probably true, but IMO to a large extent a consequence of every web content always being padded to allow moar advertising. 10+ min YT videos where the info could be conveyed in one shortish paragraph. Articles on advertising-supported platforms/publications are the same.

The Middle East in Flames: How the West Keeps Reopening Our Wounds! journal-neo.su/2025/08/01/the-…

I'm not a fan of HOA's - and sorry if your situation succumbs to homeowner 'rules' - but the house across the street and kitty corner from us has a new paint project in the works and it's turning heads.
It's a two story home, much like other's in this community that were built in the late 1800's / early 1900's.
It's a work in progress that started with roof line trim work in dark green. Then, the top third of the front was painted a salmon color.
As I came home today I noticed that the south side had been painted a lime-ish green! Which leads me to believe the pinkish paint is some kind of wood preservation coating (?)
Crews are still working.

"A 2023 study found that a single Chat GPT-3 request processed at an Arizona data center uses about 30 milliliters of water, compared to 12 ml per request in Wyoming. That doesn’t seem like much (it’s less than a shot-glass) until you consider that there are at least 1 billion ChatGPT queries worldwide per day and growing, using a total of some 8 million gallons of water daily, worldwide."

@yogthos No concept has done more damage to our environment than the pursuit of efficiency. It has always led to a totality of greater consumption and harm. Just like with AI, where total material, energy and water use is growing at alarming rates.

The tech industry has done such incredible harms to out environment, hiding behind it mantras of efficiency, innovation and progress

in reply to Yogthos

@yogthos I don't think so. The initial argument was about the huge and growing water demand from Big Tech.

You cannot remove capitalism from its technologies. It was the Scientific Revolution that supercharged capitalism. First we make the tools, then the tools make us. There is no neutral tech. We are accelerating into a Sixth Mass Extinction and a global civilizational collapse because of the type of concentrated elite cultures that only modern surveillance capitalism tech could enable.

in reply to Gerry McGovern

technology very obviously exists outside capitalism, and some of the most rapid advancements in technology happened in socialist countries.

The argument that technology necessarily leads to capitalism is completely baseless in nature.

Meanwhile, focusing on technology is fundamentally misguided because unless social relations change, there is no path towards any of these problems being addressed.

in reply to Yogthos

@yogthos I agree with you that the underlying issue is social relations. That's the whole focus of AI and social media: to individualize us and break up communities, so as to gain more control and power.

I'm reading a good bit about how Indigenous cultures approach tool / tech development. Very slow. Almost total opposite to the way the West approaches tech.

There are other ways and we need to try and find them.

in reply to Gerry McGovern

that's certainly how this tech will be applied by the ruling class. However, pretending that the toothpaste can just be put back in the tube is naive.

The solution is to create community driven alternatives and wrestle control away from the oligarchs. It's the exact same thing platforms like Mastodon are doing with social media, and it's working.

It's also very telling to look at how differently this tech is developed in China compared to the west.

our civilization collapsing is a real and likely possibility, but I don't think that's a given either.

@efialto I completely agree, although I'd argue the rapid visible collapse of USSR was also receded by a quiet decline. Similarly, the west is in a phase of the collapse where it's not overtly visible yet. Eventually it will hit an inflection point when the collapse becomes visible and dramatic in nature.

@scottdhansen that’s what it sounds like to me. In this case we are talking about master drawings that we are being used for inspection purposes. We are trying to develop a consistent numbering system for features/dimensions on a drawing so consistency. But to me, it sounds like a bunch of woke doublespeak. I already know where the master is kept, I’m not looking to replace it, only to be notified when there is a change to the master print for inspection purposes/updates.
in reply to Obi-Two al-Menashani

Everyone has differing methods of tracking changes to drawing files and methods to promote the working copy to master. Some control this through process and others through computer system checks and balances. It's however critical for certain elements of the business from quality control / production / engineering to all be on the same page with what is being released. I could expound but would probably bore half the fedi. 🥱

"y'know I'm fine with the change" well yeah of course you are idiot, you never cared about him at all until a mainstream movie covered it. people thought Superman was boring and cringe and now everyone's "hopepilled" and "feeling inspired to do better". there's no independent thoughts or analysis in people's brains.

It's about time someone stood up against these right-wing religious nut jobs that have pushed censorship and other laws that have primarily benefited politicians in the name of 'protecting' LGBTQ, women, and others and can't comprehend the difference between fantasy and reality. While I'm against the use of violence there is a HUGE difference between 'violent' video games, or in this case creepy sexual fantasies and people committing actual violence. When you pass a law criminalizing thoughts your committing a VIOLENT act that isn't justifiable. Banning actual violence (without consent) is justified, but not some sickos fantasy. Just like it's not justified to ban violent video games just because some small percentage of people will commit actual violence.
