This was a fun jigsaw to complete. Going into it, I thought it would be a nightmare, but it was challenging without being tormenting.

Imagine you have a friend. Let’s call him Rick Reasonable. Now imagine you have an enemy. Let’s call your enemy Bart B. Oilingwater. Bart is a real piece of crap. Whenever he sees you, he throws boiling water at you.www.the-reframe.com/boiling-water/
Usually you dodge it (you're always ready to dodge), but every once in a while he catches you. You have some bad scarring on one arm, and a few places on your face and neck. And you have to constantly be on the lookout for Bart, because if you let your guard down, it’s scalding water time!
Rick is a good friend; he tells you so himself. He thinks it is *really* bad that Bart throws boiling water on you. He tells you this, too. He’s written some letters to the newspaper about how bad Bart is for throwing boiling water on you. Sometimes he’ll even go out with you to watch your back.
Rick's got a popular TV show, and he’s gone on the record a few times that Bart is in the wrong for always trying to hit you in the face with boiling water. Then one day you turn on the TV at the end of the day, and you see Rick has Bart on as a guest.
Rick is arguing with Bart about whether or not it is good to douse you with boiling water. Rick is … parsing things a little more than you’d like. He wants to know if the water has to be *boiling,* if it can’t just be very hot. Bart says, no, no, it really does have to be boiling.
But does it have to be *water,* Rick asks. Could it be something a bit easier to dodge, like molasses or tar? Bart thinks about this, and decides he isn’t sure. He’ll have to get back to Rick on that one—but really, he prefers water. It's traditional.
Rick wants to know if there can’t be days Bart could promise to not throw boiling water at you. Bart doesn’t really want to set that sort of precedent. If you say this person or that person shouldn't be doused with boiling water, where does it end? Rick nods; obviously there should be limits.
Rick would like to know why it needs to be *you* every time. Bart is shocked that Rick would suggest such a thing. He insists he doesn’t have a throwing-boiling-water-on-you-specifically bone in his body. He just believes in throwing boiling water, and you happen to be the one that’s there.
Bart asks why, if you apparently hate being struck with boiling water, you insist on being in areas where you know he will be throwing it. He suggests that Rick is really the one singling him, Bart, out, by being so intolerant of his rich cultural heritage of throwing boiling water on people.
He hints that Rick’s constant scolding makes Bart want to seek you out specifically now, to throw boiling water on you, for daring to suppose such a thing of him.
Rick appears to have conceded that Bart absolutely does have a right to walk the streets carrying as much boiling water as he wants, in the long-standing tradition of our country. Bart appreciates Rick’s stance on the matter, and compliments him on his willingness to find common ground.
At the end of the segment, he and Bart agree to disagree on whether or not it is good to attempt to douse you with boiling water every day. Bart still thinks it is *very* good, even vitally necessary to freedom—though he insists it is not directed at you, but only spaces that you happen to inhabit.
Bart wonders, again, why you choose to inhabit those boiling-water spaces. Rick continues to insist that throwing at the space that you inhabit is tantamount to throwing it at you, and that it is quite rude indeed. They shake hands. Then there is a commercial for Pepsi.

"Constructive feedback" isn't "I would prefer that you do things in a different way because that is my preference," however.
I'm fully aware that other people have preferences that are different from mine.
That's why I do 2-3/hours per day of unpaid administrative work to ensure that everything I post is available in other formats (including machine-readable ones) under the most permissive CC license.
If you don't like my feed, but you want to see the things in it that are not threads, why wouldn't you write a bot that ingests my feed, discards the threads, and republishes the rest? The feed is both labeled *and* licensed to permit this.
Surely this is as valid a response to "I have different preference from you" as "therefore you should work in a way I prefer, rather than the way you prefer."
@pluralistic I don't know that this will work for you, Jeff, but I additionally subscribed to @pluralistic.net which only has one post per thread and then added a filter for "Long thread" to my account preferences.
So, I get all of the pluralistic interactions and are unique to Mastodon (retoots, replies, etc.) and I also still get notified on his longer form content. Long thread from pluralistic are not seen due to the filter, but the bot posts a link and summary that is seen.

I don't know if I had to do something, but each post is hidden for me behind a content warning, so I only have to parse it if I decide I have the energy.

@pluralistic I liked some of the suggestions to make the first post in the thread regular public and the rest of the thread “public quiet”, as well as mastodon clients that will collapse long threads automatically (or to your preference). I apologize for initiating the conversation in this semi-provocative way, but I assure you my goal, as always, is to improve the fediverse experience / open source software for everyone. I’m here to help, have fun, and find allies.
I only know "unlisted" which does nothing to decrease the likelihood that the subsequent posts will appear in TLs but DOES make those posts unsearchable, which sucks - it's all downside, no benefit... to anyone.
this is an excellent explanation but "Threading an essay requires the author to compose it in stanzas, each of which is a standalone, complete thought — and that means that readers can engage with each though separately, by replying to just that stanza." Why not post a brief summary of the blog entry with a hyperlink to the full blog post on Mastodon (this I 💯agree with and support) .. and let the users decide for themselves which parts of the blog post they want to reply to? Why duplicate every single sentence / paragraph of the blog post on mastodon? Surely your audience is smart and sophisticated enough to quote the bits they want to talk about in the replies?
I don't follow @pluralistic because I don't want the huge threads in my feed. But it feels like I'm missing out from seeing Cory's writing at all - as well as any interesting boosts, replies, or other posts. I always thought that a reasonable tradeoff would be to post the long threads to a separate Mastodon account, and boost the first post from the "main" account. That seems like a benefit for everyone.
@pluralistic do you have code or some kind of plugin which automates posting the threads? Can you share it with me? Depending on the complexity of the existing solution, I can probably pull something together if that would be a benefit for you and your readers. My suggestion would be moving the long threads to a different account, and then boosting the initial post of each thread on your existing account.

I publish the feed, newsletter and blog I would like to read. I do it for free, to the tune of many hours, every day, under an open license, so that you can alter and republish it the way you would want to see it.
@pluralistic I read Cory's posts in a feed reader, and I have a related UX improvement suggestion. Could you wrap the long thread of footer info after each post in a block like this: <details open><summary>Hide footer</summary>[long thread of footer stuff]</details> so I can close it and read the next post without scrolling past it for ages? That would be nice.

The element. HTML element creates a disclosure widget in which information is visible only when the widget is toggled into an open state. A summary or label must be provided using the
@pluralistic ah, then you can edit the html to wrap the footer in <details> like I said above. You can nest them, or do one after each <hr> if you want to present the different sections. It's like collapsing an outline in an outliner, but as native HTML.
@KevinMarks Hrm, just tried this and I really don't like it. Makes it very hard to e.g. load an edition in browser and then search the full text (because sections are collapsed).
@pluralistic the 'open' part is important there - that defaults it to not collapsed, so it looks the same as now. I agree that find should search closed <details> and open them, but browsers disagree. Maybe I should file an issue for that.
I think there are very good arguments to be made for both "just link to the blog" and "post each separate thought as a separate threaded message". There's also the third option: "post the whole thing as a single, long post", which twitter and some Mastodons don't support, but Friendica and other Mastodons do, but let's leave that out.
I think the advantage of the thread is that you can keep the entire discussion here, and people can discuss each paragraph separately. With the blog, people have to go there to read it, and then come back here to discuss it. Or discuss it in the comments section of the blog platform (if it has that), which fractures the discussion.
So I think for discussion, Cory's approach might be superior. But Mastodon doesn't make it very readable, and it does require writing in separate thoughts, which isn't how most writers write.
Maybe we need a better platform to support open discussion of long articles.
Because that's how *I* prefer to read other people's posts.
Again, this is the feed, newsletter and blog I would like to read, and it's open licensed and machine readable, so you can transform it into the feed you would like to read.
I'm curious about why you're so invested in changing how I publish, rather than changing how you read? You could write a bot that publishes my work in the form you prefer in an hour. Why wouldn't you?
@pluralistic As my dad often said to me, "take my advice and do as you please". This is a short-form space, not a long form space. But it's also far from the end of the world, more of a minor party foul. We can push it over to the clients to suppress behind a click-to-expand after, say, 5 rapid-fire sequential threaded replies from anyone, and that's a net benefit for the whole ecosystem anyway. (Reddit already kinda does a form of this. It's a good design pattern to adopt for the safety of Everyday People.)

@pluralistic well, it's clearly a clone of the Twitter model, which was 140 then 280. You can, in theory, override and set it to ONE BAZILLION CHARACTERS but that's kind of a different thing. Give George Lucas an infinite number of characters to type and you end up with Jar Jar Binks. Ain't nobody want no Jar Jar Binks.

@pluralistic I have avoided following you because of the long threads but if there's one thing this conversation has shown me it's how to configure my filters to not have that problem.
Another thought although it may be more complicated: what if you have a second account that posts only the long thread blog posts in response to the header from your main account and gets boosted by the main account? Muting an account is a lot more discoverable and easy than configuring a filter
@gbargoud It's a nice idea for someone else to implement! I'm already doing a stupendous amount of administrative work just to post to all the platforms I keep up with. The point of publishing a machine-readable, open-licensed version of everything is to let other people do those remixes, to their taste.
We're at a place now where that isn't the case, and a different software could be used (like a truly federated forum!!) or at minimum just a server that sends more than 500 characters at a time.

Des années 1940 jusqu’à la décennie 1960, des centaines de milliers de Juifs du monde musulman, dits « orientaux », arrivent en Israël. Ils subissent le traumatisme d’un départ forcé de territoires où ils vivaient depuis des siècles et doivent participer, du point de vue sioniste, à parachever la fin du « Juif diasporique ». En guise d’accueil, ces populations juives orientales ont connu le mépris et le racisme d’un pouvoir israélien décidé à redéfinir le contour d’une judéité ne pouvant être que nationaliste et sioniste, expurgée de toute trace d’arabité, perçue comme antinomique. Elles deviennent les « victimes juives du sionisme », pour paraphraser le titre d’un essai majeur (1) de l’universitaire Ella Shohat, qui explique combien « l’antiarabisme fait partie intégrante de la pratique et de l’idéologie sioniste ». Pour la première fois de leur histoire, ces populations subissent un racisme, non du fait de leur religion, mais de leur culture et de leur couleur de peau.
La prétendue antinomie entre arabité et judéité se trouve au cœur des travaux de Shohat, dont de nouveaux textes viennent d’être traduits et publiés (2). En 2021 déjà, une sélection de ses écrits (3) permettait de saisir la profondeur de la pensée de cette intellectuelle singulière. Enseignante à l’université de New York, figure majeure du renouveau des études juives-arabes, Shohat s’inscrit dans une lignée de penseurs qui revisitent l’identité juive dans sa complexité, en mettant le sionisme « sur le divan », pour plaider en faveur d’un renouvellement du regard sur les diasporas juives.
Cette quête de mémoire, mais aussi de langue, réhabilite l’identité « judéo-arabe » en se réappropriant une histoire qui a été détournée et niée par les nationalismes arabe et juif. L’omniprésence de l’idée d’une « unité du peuple juif », explique Shohat, enfin réalisée dans l’« ancienne patrie » tend à empêcher le développement d’une « mémoire affective positive de la vie avant Israël ».
L’injonction au rejet de l’arabité doit par ailleurs se lire en parallèle avec la construction d’une prétendue « civilisation judéo-chrétienne », mise sur le devant de la scène depuis une quarantaine d’années. C’est à cette « imposture » que la journaliste et historienne Sophie Bessis consacre un ouvrage (4), en démontrant la mécanique qui la sous-tend : exclusion de l’islam, et par ce biais de l’arabité, non seulement de l’histoire occidentale mais aussi du triptyque monothéiste. L’idée d’un « judéo-christianisme » chercherait à disculper l’Occident d’un antisémitisme passé comme présent, restaurant une innocence qui aurait été perdue par le judéocide nazi, tout en faisant porter à un Orient arabo-musulman caricaturé la responsabilité de la haine antijuive.
Ces travaux, chacun à leur manière, servent de manuel de résistance intellectuelle contre les partisans d’une lecture des conflictualités par le prisme du « choc des civilisations » où, sous couvert de « lutte contre l’intégrisme et le terrorisme islamiste », l’Occident incarnerait un monde libre et protecteur des Juifs. C’est parce que ce supposé philosémitisme se fonde, dans le même temps, sur une islamo-arabophobie patente dans certains médias et courants intellectuels que l’extrême droite peut si facilement se normaliser au sein d’un champ politique où ses idées sont largement reprises. Du renouveau récent d’un judaïsme antisioniste européen aux appels pour renouer avec le « diasporisme », une convergence s’opère pour redéfinir des identités politiques en rupture avec le colonialisme, passé ou présent, du Maghreb jusqu’au Proche-Orient.

in reply to David • • •100,000 was NSW police estimate (a group who have opposed this march and have consistently messaged against the 80+ near-weekly previous marches as well; the police and/or NSW government have fought the organisers in court on three or four occasions and lost every time thus far).
Organisers say that after reviewing aerial footage, they estimate the number present today was between 200,000-300,000.
Police confirmed the following: as the front of the march arrived at Milsons Point station, there were still thousands of marchers yet to get past Wynyard station (south of where the march officially began). If it wasn't the biggest political single rally in Australian history, it was a close second (the biggest is widely acknowledged to be the 2003 Stop the War rally, at around 200k in Sydney).
