I've come aboard Venthusias' ship and now I must fight a horde of his zombified victims, including one with electric tonfas sewn into her arm. Briefly, at least. Apparently, I rip them out of her flesh, which leads to the dumbest death reset of my playthrough, but hey, what's another 1 on top of 3,000?

At the individual scale, self-hosting is not a good way to “be in control of my data.”

It’s like saying I do a vegetable garden to be in control of my food. I need much more than I can grow, it’s an inefficient use of my time, and I’m one bad season away from losing it all.

Resilience and transparency are key to be in control of my data and I can’t achieve this alone. This is a social problem, we need to bring solutions as a society.

I self host too and I also host other people. However, I don't do as much of it as I used to. Hosting other people is a huge headache so I let that business fade out.

I never made a serious effort to grow my #hosting service. It ran it as a social enterprise.

I didn't just offer good hosting to them, I also offered them support and advice they could trust. That kind of service is something that I should have valued more and priced in a way that was more fair to me.

Offering artisanal hosting run by an expert who knows you, your site, and your goals is something I wish I had more time to do. I'd love to see other people build a business from this model. My advice is to be sure to price it fairly to yourself and clearly explain the value you are providing.

to be fair, in Newtonian physics, you can record a video of a ball throw, play it in reverse and not really be able to tell that it's in reverse without looking at other things.

But if space itself is expanding, it's very obvious when you play it in reverse (because you can see the space itself shrinking).

In general, conservation of energy only really holds on average, and falls apart at extremely large and extremely tiny scales.

the energy lost isn't enough to explain the expansion of space if that's what you're thinking. That energy isn't being "converted" to space, it's being lost due to the expansion of space.

Traveling forward in time is "easy", astronauts on the ISS have traveled forward in Earth time by ~10ms every year. You just have to be moving really fast or be deep in a gravity well, causing time to be slower for you than on Earth, so when you come back, more time has passed on Earth than has passed for you.

Traveling backwards requires FTL shenanigans though, barring the existence of new physics (eg exotic matter, stable traversible wormholes etc), even infinite energy isn't enough to go backwards.

it's kinda complicated, stretching into things I really can't claim to understand too well, but quantum physics seems to kind of muddy things due to the uncertainty in the energy of the system until you measure it. So, you can never actually measure (or observe the effects of) any non-conserved energy, but that isn't the same as energy being conserved until you measure it.
