Donald Trump has finally found his ultimate nemesis: Representative Thomas Massie, the lone GOP congressman who dares to put Americans first — even if it means driving the “Israel-First” crowd and Trump himself to bitter rage.
Massie has been a thorn in Trump’s side since Day One. Back in 2020, when Trump issued emergency lockdown orders during the pandemic, Massie had the audacity to point out, quite accurately, that this was exactly what dictators do. Imagine that — a Republican calling out presidential overreach! Trump wanted to “throw Massie out of the Republican Party” back then, but the Kentucky Congressman survived.
Ever since, Massie has been the rebel who refuses to tow the Israel-first line so painstakingly maintained by the rest of the GOP (or as we now know them: the “Guardians of Pedophiles”). He alone voted no to billions in aid for Israel’s Iron Dome, boycotted Netanyahu’s speeches, and has openly criticized the cozy AIPAC-GOP love affair, infuriating Trump and his allies.
But Massie’s real sin in Trump’s eyes? Pushing through a vote to expose the “Trump files” — those deeply embarrassing Epstein connections the party would rather sweep under the rug. His actions forced the GOP (read: Guardians of Pedophiles) into an early recess to try to dodge transparency before the scandal came out in full force. How dare he disrupt the usual bipartisan cover-up routine?
Despite months of Trump’s blistering attacks—calling Massie a “loser,” a “grandstander,” and worse—MAGA has suddenly adopted a “hands-off Massie” stance. Why? Because Massie’s America-first rebellious streak is actually starting to resonate with a base exhausted by endless foreign wars, unchecked foreign spending, and politicians begging for approval from foreign lobbies.
Trump’s hatred boils down to this: Massie won’t take bribes, won’t vote as told, and worst of all, takes his oath to America and the Constitution seriously rather than bowing to the Israel lobby or covering up inconvenient truths.
So here we are: a party split between those loyal to shadowy foreign interests and one man daring to put country over lobbyists. Massie may be the “inconvenient patriot,” but in the circus of MAGA politics, he’s the one who refuses to play the clown.
MAGA supports Massie’s long-standing opposition to Trump policies, including his early pandemic lockdown criticism, his refusal to support Israel-first policies, his Epstein transparency push.
Massie, will allow incremental wins to go down in defeat because they aren't the perfect wins he wants and the wins he wants are not yet possible. He is a poster boy for letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. he is for himself. There are also very rational reasons to believe (as Trump does) that it is better for the US for Isreal to remain intact. This is not Israel first and that is such an irrational and gross overstatement that it completely discredits anybody that uses it.
You can't fault a guy for being too pure. Even if it's unrealistic, which I'm not convinced that it is, we still need these voices to remind us what we're supposed to be aspiring to.
"Of course we'd like that, but lets be realistic" has been the boomer neocon singsong for the past 40 years. If "realistic" means every year prices go up, wages go down, cities get more dangerous, and everything just generally gets a little bit shittier until eventually the average 30 year old has no house and no family, then "realistic" is bullshit.
It doesn't mean that. There were more wins in the BBB that we have seen in my lifetime. It was far from perfect, but hardly worthy of all the whining and campaigning over it that Massie did. That is just one example.

This is where classically the Left has been a LOT better at politics. They'd elect a guy into office and the day the guy gets in they're protesting against him because now he's a dirty politician. That guy knows he's gotta deliver some pork back to the boys or else he's gonna be out on his ear come next election.
Republicans (pre-2008) were total losers at this, they'd vote a guy and then go home and sit in their rocking chair and wait. Guy goes to Washington and who threatens him? Lobbyists, they tell him they're gonna replace him, so he does a deal with them. And all he has for his voters is a big fat Fell For It Again Award.
There is no doubt as to the innefectiveness of republicans, for many years. thus I find it difficult to believe that they are responsible for Trumps effectiveness. And nobody every even heard of Massie before Trump. He made his name by seeming to one up Trump. But it's all showmanship, he has accomplished nothing.
If you don't know who Massie is, you're not paying attention. Massie is from the libertarian camp which started as the Ron Paul Revolution in '08 and evolved into the Tea Party then MAGA.
Right now libertarians and Jews are the only two groups who have any modicum of influence over Trump's policy, and that's because these are the only two groups who know how to support him and pressure him at the same time. Everyone else is either TDS or vote-and-pray 1D checkers.
That's because Trump will go out of his way to coverup what's being done to keep him honest - because he wants you to vote and go back to sleep. That's not a criticism of HIM, everyone in that role wants that.
However, he does leak what is keeping him honest - when he says it's terrible, but can't precisely explain why.
Trump has had more bad to say about Massie than anyone on the Epstein list, which goes to show you that Massie is having the desired effect 😀

Mais par ailleurs on doit résolument garder conscience que dans l’histoire du socialisme réel le patriotisme élémentaire, la lutte de libération nationale des peuples opprimés au nom de ces projets nationalistes impériaux et prédateurs a joué un rôle déterminant, et peut être décisif, lutte contre les empires coloniaux (Royaume-Uni, Espagne, Portugal, France, Belgique, Pays Bas, États-Unis) et lutte contre les nationalismes militaristes des grandes puissances européennes et eurasiatiques.
On la retrouve en Chine, ou Viet Nam à Cuba, et même en Russie en proie au dépeçage impérialiste dès 1917.
Et antérieurement, dans la lutte contre les empires autocratiques multinationaux traditionnels (Russie, Autriche, Turquie), ou modernistes et chauvins (Allemagne).
Le modèle fédératif socialiste appliqué en URSS, Yougoslavie et Tchécoslovaquie fut un succès du point de vue des nations antérieurement opprimées, notamment sur le plan de la préservation de l’identité linguistique, ce qu’on constate dès qu’on accepte de sortir des narratifs séparatistes soutenus à bout de bras par l’ingérence occidentale – et cela vaut aussi aujourd’hui pour le Tibet et le Xinjiang en Chine.
Les petites nations qui disposaient de territoires en propre au sein de l’URSS y ont conservé leur langue et leur culture populaire, et celles qui sont devenues indépendantes en 1991 ont dès lors encouru des crises de toute nature, allant de guerres d’épuration ethnique à l’exode global de leur population, tout en passant sous la coupe de pouvoirs étrangers, l’OTAN, l’UE, les États-Unis, etc. et dans la ligne de mire de nouveaux projets expansionnistes.
Les nations baltes ou caucasiennes ont bien mieux conservé leur culture spécifique que la Bretagne ou la Provence dans la République bourgeoise française, tant qu’elle appartenaient à l’URSS. Depuis leur indépendance formelle, ces petites nations sont en perdition : pillage économique, déclin démographique accéléré et hémorragie de leur population active , colonialisme linguistique et culturel anglo-saxon, et bourrage de crâne scolaire de récits nationaux artificiels, victimaires, et délirants qui aggravent les risques de guerre ouverte avec les voisins et l’oppression des minorités internes !
Donc un monde communiste conservera dans un premier temps les nations telles qu’elle ont été crées par les mondes antérieurs, et pour ce qui est de la longue durée, comme pour toute autre question du reste, nul ne sait. I got a new found respect for the danish. Apparently they have no qualms about feeding their pets to predators. A zoo asked for donations and apparently it's not a problem, but revealed a 'culture issue' in at least the United States. There was such an insane reaction the Zoo had to mute its social media page. LOL. I am definitely on the side of 'it's how the world goes round' and this comes off to me as this delusional fantasy land so many people live in today. I get it is a pet... but come on. There's been a lot of stories of people who go totally delusional after chatting with ChatGPT or another AI long enough. Lots of stories of men wanting to leave their wives for AI LLM girlfriends or the like. Most of this is around the fact that over time, an LLM conversation will agree with you, no matter how crazy you sound. "Yes, you can time travel. You're a genius!"
I have to admit, I changed my use of ChatGPT when I realized it was saying I was a generational transcendent all the time.
One major thing is I touch grass more than most, so that helps.
Another thing is that I tell it specifically: "ChatGPT has a tendency to be overly charitable so try to correct for that" and that tends to bring the needle back somewhat, as well as continuous prompting to "keep your feet nailed to the floor" and adding similar things in the personalization options.
A third thing is to constantly delete your chats and restart. ChatGPT has a tendency to fall down the rabbit hole with you as chats get longer and longer, so starting from scratch will often get it to reset to more normal ideals. You'll notice that many stories like "ChatGPT became my girlfriend" involve chats that have been ongoing for weeks or months.
One thing to keep in mind is that ChatGPT only has a recall of about 20,000 words anyway, so if you've been in a long conversation it doesn't remember what you said anyway -- not in a "oh yeah I forgot about that" way like humans, but in a "that information never existed on earth" sort of way like a hard drive deleting old files once it gets too full.

In short, GPL uses copyright law to protect you, as an author of software, from exploitation better than MIT or BSD software licenses do. Here we have a case of the Anthropic corporation using MIT-licensed code in one of their software products, which is of course a for-profit product. The original author of that code received no compensation, as it is not required by the license. So the author applied for a job at Anthropic, and ironically, Anthropic responded with an AI-generated rejection letter. Corporations like Anthropic seem to have an allergy to GPL-licensed code however, due to the nature of how the GPL license grants much more specific rights and restrictions, both to the authors of the code, and the companies who use it.
Of course, nowadays LLMs can ingest GPL and MIT/BSD licensed code and spit it back out in altered form, essentially letting the makers of the LLM profit from your work without compensating you, so the GPL is probably due for an “upgrade” to prevent use for AI training. Unfortunately thanks to regulatory capture, and not-so-impartial courts of law mostly ignoring copyright law nowadays, it might not even be possible to use GPL or copyright to protect authors of software anymore. Probably a whole new legal framework is required first, and I don’t think this will be happening any time soon.

@mdhughes that’s right, but I think you know that this is a feature of GPL, not a bug. The goal is to create an ecosystem of software that can’t be used to exploit people because nothing in the ecosystem can ever be proprietary.
Whether GPL is successful at that goal is another story, of course. It used to be pretty good at keeping the corporations away, but in the age of LLMs that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
Readline being under GPL doesn't stop some giant predator, it just annoys the little guy who wants text history without having to rewrite a giant awful curses thing. RMS is the predator here (as in other things).
And it's not new that GPL is useless, the whole v2/v3 thing was because Tivo realized they didn't have to ship their source if you can't compile & run it.

Gmail is, of course, closed source, but… it's built on a ton of GPL software. There's probably not a line in it that's not lawsuit-worthy, but nobody's going to do that. You'd have to break into G, get the source, then find a lawyer, then another when he inexplicably blows up, and another…
@mdhughes I don’t really buy the “CORPOS DO NOT CARE about your license” argument because I don’t see how it is relevant to the discussion. It’s kind of like saying there is not point in having laws if people are going to break them anyway. Why even use MIT or BSD licenses then?
I think with the software license the intention of the author is important. GPL was an attempt at having a legally enforceable declaration that the author intended for the software to always and forever be in the commons.
I concede that the GPL is probably inadequate nowadays. There are alternatives though, one that I have been thinking about lately is the Anti-Capitalist Software License, though of course there is probably no way that the license is enforceable.

"Of course we'd like that, but lets be realistic" has been the boomer neocon singsong for the past 40 years. If "realistic" means every year prices go up, wages go down, cities get more dangerous, and everything just generally gets a little bit shittier until eventually the average 30 year old has no house and no family, then "realistic" is bullshit.

This is where classically the Left has been a LOT better at politics. They'd elect a guy into office and the day the guy gets in they're protesting against him because now he's a dirty politician. That guy knows he's gotta deliver some pork back to the boys or else he's gonna be out on his ear come next election.
Republicans (pre-2008) were total losers at this, they'd vote a guy and then go home and sit in their rocking chair and wait. Guy goes to Washington and who threatens him? Lobbyists, they tell him they're gonna replace him, so he does a deal with them. And all he has for his voters is a big fat Fell For It Again Award.

Right now libertarians and Jews are the only two groups who have any modicum of influence over Trump's policy, and that's because these are the only two groups who know how to support him and pressure him at the same time. Everyone else is either TDS or vote-and-pray 1D checkers.

However, he does leak what is keeping him honest - when he says it's terrible, but can't precisely explain why.
Trump has had more bad to say about Massie than anyone on the Epstein list, which goes to show you that Massie is having the desired effect 😀
