"I’ve heard many people say they’ve stopped reading, listening to, or watching the news because it makes them feel overwhelmed, alarmed, and ultimately powerless. Journalism shouldn’t just inform, it should connect people to resources and others who are already organizing in their communities."

NASA has selected six companies to produce studies focused on lower-cost ways to launch and deliver spacecraft of various sizes and forms to multiple, difficult-to-reach orbits. The firm-fixed-price awards comprise nine studies with a maximum total value of approximately $1.4 million. The awardees are: “With the increasing maturity of commercial space delivery capabilities, we’re asking […]

"By 2030, fresh water demand is projected to outstrip the global water supply by nearly 56%, according to the World Resources Institute. At the same time, the growing development of artificial intelligence infrastructure—which depends on water for cooling systems and throughout its energy supply chain—is projected to consume 1.1 trillion to 1.7 trillion gallons of freshwater annually, roughly equivalent to the yearly water use of all households in California."

Not celebrated by anybody who was paying attention. One of the key changes responsible for wrecking the housing market and ushering in austerity.

VSCode Marketplace Extensions Installer for VSCodium-based IDEs

I recently published a new extension for installing VSIX extensions from the VSCode Marketplace straight from any VSCodium based IDE that uses open-vsx.org for the extensions marketplace. Bear in mind that extensions like “ms-vscode.cpptools” won’t work anyway, since they are proprietary binaries that only work on MS VSCode. Other than that, any extension that is in the VSCode marketplace but not in open-vsx will be available for download.

You can find the extension from the extensions manager under “VSCode Marketplace Extensions Installer” or download the VSX file from open-vsx.org/extension/cooligu…

This extension is still very new, so expect some bugs here and there (especially when making very generic queries like “theme” instead of being specific like “One Dark”).

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

"Even before the AI boom, water industry professionals worried about the massive amounts of water data centers required for cooling and how that demand impacts water scarcity issues worldwide. The rise of AI is now making this worse. But the problem goes well beyond just consuming water for cooling. Challenges associated with wastewater, chip manufacturing, and even efforts to produce cleaner energy are all exacerbating AI’s water consumption problem."

Cooling tech used in data centers are producing wastewater contaminated with dust, chemicals, and minerals. Chip manufacturing also generates wastewater, including heavy metals. This wastewater is toxic to the environment and can be difficult for municipal wastewater plants to treat and remove. Mining precious metals and rare earth elements required for semiconductors and other AI hardware also consumes and pollutes water resources.

First asteroid sightings push Hera’s camera to the limit

Asteroid (18805) Kellyday

ESA’s Hera mission has captured images of asteroids (1126) Otero and (18805) Kellyday. Though distant and faint, the early observations serve as both a successful instrument test and a demonstration of agile spacecraft operations that could prove useful for planetary defence.

Hera is currently travelling through space on its way to a binary asteroid system. In 2022, NASA’s DART spacecraft impacted the asteroid Dimorphos, changing its orbit around the larger asteroid Didymos. Now, Hera is returning to the system to help turn asteroid deflection into a reliable technique for planetary defence.

In a detailed social media post on Tuesday, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett warned that "Israel’s" standing in the United States “has never been so bad” and that it is increasingly viewed as a “leper state.”

He noted that “the Democratic party hasn’t been with us for some time” and added, “we’re also losing the Republican party, whose support for Israel could once be counted on,” while crediting US President Donald Trump with maintaining support for "Israel" during his term.

“Even those who have been our friends are having a hard time defending the State of Israel,” Bennett wrote, adding that “Israel is being seen more and more as a liability and burden on the USA and Americans.”

Bennett attributed the worsening situation to the current Israeli government, which he has long criticized. He accused it of pursuing a chaotic and self-defeating foreign policy and claimed it is causing “terrible damage” while still failing to grasp “the magnitude of the disaster.”

@GossiTheDog the biggest cooperations take bad decisions, with perhaps IBM in WWII as a similar example...

In the platform economy, it's hard to stay clean from others running software for purposes you would not agree with. But, taking on as a client the army of a country that is suspected of war crimes and has been summoned to stand trial at international court, that would be easy to avoid.

By choosing to take on these huge contracts, M$ has become a player in modern arms industry.

Let's not forget they killed the supposed "shooter" too over that. Someone died that day. Someone that was probably approached by someone in the Trump campaign and offered money if he'd go up onto a roof and aim an air rifile at Trump and pull the trigger. Someone who was probably told don't worry you'll be fine. That he'll be okay. Ignore the fact that he was a stupid son-of-a-bitch. But he still died that day. And Trump didn't. Because there was no bullet. It was all special effects. ---
