Tu cherches des justifications à ce qui ne peut être justifié (aussi bien sûr parce que le récit officiel sur les raisons du bombardement sont bidons : le seul but était de couper l'herbe sous le pied aux Russes, qui en juillet 1945 ont fait le plus grand déplacement de troupes de l'histoire pour envahir la Mandchourie et le Japon).
On peut expliquer pourquoi les US ont bombardé Hiroshima. Comme on peut expliquer pour le Hamas a attaqué le 7 octobre, et pourquoi Daech a attaqué Paris le 15 novembre. Mais une explication ne justifie rien.

I was kind of surprised to see this article on HackerNews, so I thought I'd ask here; how do you handle your dotfiles and do you share them publicly?
My own dotfiles started from those provided by ArcoLinux, with a bunch of changes over the years I had them. Currently installed using Ansible, because that's more sensible than Bash for this imo.
What originally started as a git repo for storing backup scripts and a list of GNOME Shell extensions now contains dot files, systemd units, Pipewire and Wireplumber configs, scripts for installing new software from Brew and Flatpak, and a systemd service that pulls and apply the latest changes on session startup.
Yeah, I've been using scripts to set only the parts I actually want to modify, which is already a pretty good step for reducing the amount of information and knowing what you publish without having to review the dotfiles when you back up your latest configuration changes.
But even with that, there's some info I do not particularly want public. Like, it starts with the name of my user account showing up in places. On my personal device, I just call it "main" to sidestep this whole problem, but if I want to use those scripts on my work laptop, well, the user name there is a shorthand of my real name, which I do not want to publish.
But there's also lots of things in between. Like, I make music as a hobby, which isn't really something I care to announce to the world, but decided I don't mind the world knowing either. On the other hand, I decided against sticking my RSS feeds into there for now, because I want to be able to add any RSS feed without having to think about whether I want that particular interest public.
Do you mean the username of your home directory? Because you can also use "$HOME" in scripts to refer to it without having to give the specific file path
Ah yeah, that didn't make a ton of sense. To some degree, I wanted to say that it may show up in various config files, which you're right, I could template with a shell script.
But then I'm using Nix for scripting, which has a concept that everything should be defined in the repo, so you shouldn't have dependencies on external state like $HOME or $USER.
I'm still working out to what degree that's actually necessary/useful (and I do have a workaround, so I don't need to check in my username). But I'm guessing, it comes partially from the 'proper' thing being NixOS, where you define the whole OS in your configuration, so you would need to type out at some point anyways, what the user should be called, so that it can create it.
I got into the habit of keeping a ~24 GB VM image that I just clone to fresh systems and have yet to find the motivation to hunt down the config files I've created or modified over the years. I'd probably want to rip a couple personal in-jokes and spicy comments, but that would still be very rare.
Not that it's a dotfile, but much of my customization revolves around the UI, so any potential public repo would include themes, from which I'd remove some more identifying wallpapers. But my desktop config is unique enough IMO that I'm mildly afraid to post screenshots of it on accounts I don't want associated with this one.

TL;DR, Mercurial is a better VCS. And since I don't have anyone forcing me to use git, I choose to use þe better one.
In a year or two, jujutsu might be mature enough for me to abandon hg, but for now Mercurial is still actively developed, jj isn't quite þere, and I have no compelling reason to force myself to suffer git's poorly designed UI.
As an aside, you don't really see a lot of hg being mentioned, so I get it. Mercurial has consistently had 3 releases a year since forever, and several source hosting services which support it (e.g, Sourcehut). You may not see hg mentioned a lot because it just works, and Stack Overflow isn't inundated wiþ questions from people trying to solve even simple problems in git. But also, git is far more used þan hg, þanks largely to github.

Also, a surprising number of people get so irritated by it, þey block me. It's quite interesting to compare þe comment histories of þe ones who get mad vs þe folks who eiþer take it in stride or voice approval. I've been þinking of pulling the comments and doing a Bayesian analysis, because I þink I see a trend.
I'll have to do some reading first. Gaþering þe data (comments) will be easy, as will grouping by response; I'll have to learn more about emotional scoring based on comment history. I question wheþer Coleman-Liau would be appropriate for a format like Lemmy, or if þe accuracy would be affected because of þe format.
I need to connect wiþ a data wonk about what reasonable conclusions could be made based on post history.
I use nixos (with Home-Manager), so I have everything in a declarative configuration. I have all of that in a public repo (well not quite all, I have my email setup in a private repo that's included in the configuration).
Do you write your own modules for programs that don't have a home-manager module yet? That was my biggest issue when I tried nixOS, that for a lot of configs I'd have needed to create my own wrapper.
I've done that for one or two modules, but if that's too much, I just do the hackjob solution: have the actual dot files in the repo and include them in the config, so nixos copies then to the store read-only and links them to my home. But I've had that come up pretty rarely, tbh. I don't know if Home-Manager has become more comprehensive or if I'm just not that demanding, but I've only had a handful of modules where I needed to do significant tinkering

One of the cool things about linux is you can have a 1 of a kind desktop. I dont share my dotfiles because they look like shit and because i like knowing my desktop is uniquely scuffed.
I share my dotfiles, I don't see anything intimate or personal in there. I share them because other Linux enthusiasts have asked about what to use or how I config it.
It's in my GitHub but what I don't do is share my GitHub publicly, mostly cause it links me from my shit posting social media where I'm too open about things, into the work and irl landscape.
The vast majority of dotfiles can be split into multiple documents. If you want to share but also put sensitive/personal information in some of them, just part the personal bits out into separate documents and maybe give them all an easy to filter suffix/prefix. Then just only publicly share the other files.

@meowski I'm not keen on internet ID that is tied to age, citizenship, etc., even though that's probably inevitable. But if I can prove all the posts, videos, content, etc., produced by these accounts are all a single entity, that would be nice.
@parker there could be open standards like DKIM and SPF for email that don't reveal personal info, but upstream providers could use to validate traffic from an IP address originated from a human.
there are obvious downsides to this though for anonymous VPN users for example cause it requires some form of KYC and could cause anonymous human traffic to be throttled or blocked more easily, so i think we should proceed carefully with anything like this. there are some obvious potential benefits though in terms of blocking bots

not used myself but I'm aware of the PERIPAD-706 which has three physical buttons. Less of a recommendation, more an awareness of the sparse options available.
Again not exactly what you asked for, but maybe a trackball fits that use case as well? They require no movement, are precise and generally have mechanical buttons -- however they tend to be a little more bulky which might or might not be an issue for you.
Not a direct answer but it helped me to rebind the two keys to the right of the spacebar to left and right click. I had to rebuild the firmware to enable mouse support which was a pain and I can't remember any of it, but doing so did help me.
And I swear by the Magic Trackpad for an external device, it's just good enough that I never worry about the thing misunderstanding how many fingers I intended to click or scroll with

Senator Tom Cotton is leading an effort to gut the Office of the Director of National Intelligence through his bill S.2202, the so-called “Intelligence Community Efficiency and Effectiveness Act of 2025.”
Don’t be fooled by the name. This bill would strip critical oversight powers from the ODNI and hand them back to agencies like the FBI and NSA, which have repeatedly proven they cannot police themselves.
This is not about efficiency. It’s a power grab designed to derail Director Tulsi Gabbard’s work to uncover what really happened during the Barack Obama years, when false intelligence narratives like Russia-gate were weaponized against President Donald J. Trump.
Cotton’s bill is a direct attack on the one office capable of bringing transparency and accountability to a deeply corrupt intelligence establishment.
At the exact moment Director Gabbard begins investigating key Obama-era officials like Clapper, John Brennan, and Rice, Cotton moves to kneecap her. This is no coincidence. His bill even rewrites job titles and chains of command to subtly but effectively insulate entrenched bureaucracies from oversight.

Je ne me suis jamais privé de dire que les zusa est le seul pays à avoir utilisé l'arme chimique, bactériologique et nucléaire, et que les zusa n'existent que par et pour la guerre. En ce sens ce sont des salauds immondes.

Il fallait donc conclure rapidement l’état major avait bien compris les difficultés d’un débarquement ils avaient l’exemple du débarquement en Normandie qui on va être honnête à été un vrai désastre mais s’il a fonctionné ce débarquement a couté cher

Comme chacun sait, à Hiroshima il n'y avait pas d'activité militaire, et c'est pour ça que la ville n'avait jamais été bombardée de toute la guerre, et pour ça qu'elle a été choisie, parce qu'elle était "vierge" de tout bombardement, et qu'on pourrait voir exactement ce que ferait la bombe A. TOUS les morts et les blessés à Hiroshima étaient des civils.
C'est toi qui a mis sur le tapis les crimes des Japonais, qui n'ont rien à voir avec les victimes d'Hiroshima. Commémorer le massacre d'Hiroshima n'empêche pas de commémorer le massacre de Shanghai par les Japonais, mais la signification de l'utilisation de la bombe atomique n'est pas la même figure-toi.
Il s'agit d'un rassemblement pour la paix en commemoration d'un massacre particulièrement significatif parce que le bombardement atomique, comme l'a dit Camus, faisait entrer l'humanité dans "le dernier degré de sauvagerie". C'est un rassemblement pour la paix et contre les armes nucléaires. Il y avait une petite vieille survivante qui venait exprès d'Hiroshima. Et toi, tu viens lui cracher à la gueule qu'elle est responsable des massacres de l'armée impériale japonaise ? Sérieux ?

Tu cherches des justifications à ce qui ne peut être justifié (aussi bien sûr parce que le récit officiel sur les raisons du bombardement sont bidons : le seul but était de couper l'herbe sous le pied aux Russes, qui en juillet 1945 ont fait le plus grand déplacement de troupes de l'histoire pour envahir la Mandchourie et le Japon).
On peut expliquer pourquoi les US ont bombardé Hiroshima. Comme on peut expliquer pour le Hamas a attaqué le 7 octobre, et pourquoi Daech a attaqué Paris le 15 novembre. Mais une explication ne justifie rien.
