If you want an ebook of some public domain work, either:
1. Check standardebooks.org before Gutenberg. They clean up books from Gutenberg with sane typography and print design.
2. Consider buying a "Dover Thrift Editions" version of the ebook. Many fly-by-night ebook "publishers" are turning a quick buck on selling you a Gutenberg edition. Dover is a real publisher, even in print, and their well-formatted ebooks of public domain works are usually under $4, or even less.
@gme Probably not, since Project Guternberg itself does not ask for any such thing. Also, Standard Ebooks doesn't sell their books, they're free. And it wouldn't surprise me of those guys were digitizing books that had already been pubished by Dover.
Now you're splitting hairs and being way overly pedantic.
They don't ask for fees because it's a library, not a wholesale supply catalog.
And just because someone doesn't ask for something doesn't mean it's not the write [sic] thing to do, #1, or that it wouldn't be appreciated to receive.
@gme From being in the Standard Ebooks mailing list, a lot of the Standard volunteers are also Distributed Proofreading (aka Gutenberg) volunteers. So a lot of Standard projects have the same person who provided the Gutenberg transcription applying the Standard Ebooks formatting.
If you're making money off someone's volunteer'd work at least throw some shekels at the people/ group/ organization that made it possible for you to make your money.
@gme Standard isn't selling books, they provide them free of charge. They have a Patreon that defrays server costs.
And like I said, the same volunteers using the texts to generate the formatted epubs for Standard Ebooks are mostly the people who are producing the texts for Gutenberg as new things enter the public domain.
(The community of people dedicated enough to public domain books being available that they spend time making them available being smallish)

@gme Beats me but they were around for 30 years before Project Gutenberg got its start. It may shock you to learn that bookstores are filled with public domain works for sale.
