Comencé a leer de nuevo el libro de Jenny Odell How to do Nothing. Hace tiempo que leí este libro y no recordaba mucho del contenido, aunque sí de la temática. Cuando recién reiniciábamos actividades después de la pandemia, recuerdo que hubo una oleada de reflexiones sobre el tema de la productividad y el cansancio que nos produjo no tener límites claros entre nuestro trabajo y nuestra vida personal.
Ahora yo he vuelto a reflexionar sobre este tema porque empecé a autoexigirme mucho otra vez. Y no es que realmente fuera necesario. El ritmo de vida que requiero para satisfacer mis necesidades materiales es lento, pero a veces me remuerde esa culpa de no “estar haciendo suficiente”. Con este libro vuelvo a recordarme que no es necesario realmente hacer demasiado; esa idea suele estar aparejada de un deber ser anclado al Capital y no tanto a nuestra vida. Aquí entiendo vida más como el proceso orgánico natural de nuestra mente-cuerpo.
Hay cosas que a veces me pongo a pensar:
Una forma de resistencia al capitalismo tiene que ver con no convertirnos en ese sujetx dócil, productivo que sólo piensa en optimizar cada una de sus actividades para seguir haciendo circular el Capital.
Para que nuestra sociedad funcione no necesitamos realmente de todo ese excedente de trabajo. Ese excedente es absorbido por el Capital, succionando nuestra vida y nuestra energía.
Soy una persona muy ansiosa: con un poco que me empiece a acelerar se da un efecto de bola de nieve que me hace ir de una actividad a otra compulsivamente. Esta dinámica productivista sólo empeora esa situación para mi.
Jenny me recuerda un poco que esas dinámicas son producidas y fomentadas. No solamente en el mundo físico, sino también en el mundo digital. Hace tiempo que yo no tengo redes sociales, a excepción de Mastodon, y vaya que el ritmo al que mi mente va, sobre todo buscando información, ha sido decreciendo. Creo que siempre nos quedará un poco esa sensación de que podríamos estar haciendo más: por las personas que amamos, por lograr un cambio social, por nuestro crecimiento personal, etc. Al final del día es absurdo pensar la vida como si fuéramos una compañía que necesita acelerar todos sus procesos y objetivos para mantenerse “competitiva”. No somos eso, y la vida es mucho más que eso.
Hay días que basta con existir, respirar, contemplar el mundo que nos rodea, ser conscientes de nuestro cuerpo, de nuestras emociones, de las personas humanas y no-humanas que cohabitan con nosotrxs; trabajar a ritmo pausado, hacer lo que sentimos que tenemos que hacer y no perder el sentido de lo que amamos hacer.

Elliot recently stopped doing formal video essays, for reasons of not being able to find sponsors (that he ethically would be willing to shill for) to pay for the work that goes into such productions.
Yet his livestream discussions, despite the lack of intensive research and production that a video essay might involve, nonetheless are proving quite fruitful.
In particular, he's been returning regularly to the theme of lack of control (esp. disability and chronic illness, nodding to Long Covid without ever naming it) and the valuation of choices, which comes dangerously close to talking about ego-value, even if his background in antiquated theory doesn't quite let him get there.
Yes, I saw the one where he explains that, I think it was the one talking about how that other bigger channel was refusing to take a stand against genocide etc, and some discussion of subscriptions and money.
it's interesting how the good channels don't get much money but others do-- I'm amazed FD Signifier has gotten so successful without being shadowbanned into oblivion (yet).
One in which he does media critique, centering on one figure as exemplar, and references his own choices by matter of comparison.
The other, a while after, where he merely announces that he won't be doing further video essays for the time being.
To be clear, Sang's critique was speaking to the fact that some ostensibly "good" channels do well, but that they do so by not being quite so choosy about their ad revenue.
To wit, FD doing adverts for Ground News, where we now know that Ground News is largely repackaging the liberal bias of some guy named Dave. (Of course, FD himself asserts that his own politics are rather vanilla, so that tracks.)
That said, FD is very clear enough of the time that his commentary is addressed to Black audiences (despite the number of white folk that follow his channel) that he's likely evaluated as a niche: the cost of shadowbanning is likely weighed against his draw of particular audiences to the platform.

I guess FD has hit on a good balance. He says enough real, actual, heavy-hitting shit that I don't quite think of him as vanilla even if he claims so, but I guess it's packaged in just enough lib-comforting caveats that his valued niche status is enough to keep him afloat.
What gets me is how for decades now people have just been letting corporations arbitrarily decide who is and isn't allowed to make money off of video content, as if this isn't having a massive fucking impact on the trajectory of our culture, with nary a major campaign to demand transparent/customizable algorithms or anything really.
FD sticks to the liberal highway, largely staying in his lane of Black liberalism. He may draw one's attention to what landmarks along the leftist service roads may be visible as we drive past; he may even pull up and get out of the car long enough to kick rocks at a decommissioned radical service station or two; yet all of this is in service of his critique of liberalism (and by extension, run-of-the-mill conservatism, which is just the other side of 18th century liberalism), from his own position within liberalism, of how it co-opts and subverts that history to its own ends.
