Imagine a world in which you can lose your job for calling someone by their chosen name. Welcome to today's world of teaching. In Florida, you can be fired for calling your students by their chosen name without parental consent. That's what happened to Melissa Calhoun.

Her district's superintendent said that parental input can’t be ignored. But what if the parents are just plain wrong?

No matter. SCOTUS gave a ruling earlier this year that essentially made parental input is the ONLY thing that matters. Parents across the nation can now exempt their child from any and all curriculum that "goes against their religious beliefs." This would allow parents to exempt their kids from any of the standards, including evolution, in biology, or the Civil Rights movement, in U.S. history.

From the teachers' and schools' perspective, this completely throws the concept of teaching standards out the window. It makes it pointless for teachers to plan curriculum in advance since they wouldn't know until the last minute which students, if any, would be allowed to learn it. And it would significantly increase teachers' workload since they must create alternative curriculum for students who are exempted.

I am still not over the situation when someone asked for my “gmail”, I gave them my email address and they were like “No, your gmail!” And tried to explain to me that they only could send messages to Gmail accounts and they do not have an email.

We really need to teach more computer literacy. It was not their fault, they just did not know that Gmail IS email.

By the way, one of my cutomers knew this, but her disability kept her from being able to reach it. Most people would give that a "That sucks". I offered to reroute her entire set up to put the router at wheelchair height, and showed her pulling the router side of the power cable, instead of the plug side, accomplished the same result.
She was very greatful.
"No biggie. I'm just not an ablist asshat."

Fuck her cable internet intaller!

"But here's what's suspicious: we were told fortification would prevent bone disease. Instead, we got an epidemic of bone disease in the first generation raised on fortified foods.

Maybe it's coincidence. Maybe it's the hundred other environmental toxins introduced in the same era. Or maybe – just maybe – flooding everyone's system with a fat-soluble synthetic hormone that affects calcium metabolism had unintended consequences that took decades to manifest. I have set up a disconnected local chatbot using open webui, and I have fed it all of the manuals and maps and diagrams of the Sempf Compound. I can ask it things like "which breaker should I turn off to replace the floor outlets in the living room" and it answers correctly.

I'm afraid to talk about it here because of the general hatred of GenAI. Probably should set up an alt on a techbro instance or something. My filters would probably block everyone so I'm not sure that would work.

Hate to say it, but this stat is more than 10 years old. The corporate leach who runs that company is making a lot more than that today. Plus, he no doubt gets far more than that in non-wage compensation.

The federal minimum wage is still only $7.25/hour, same as it was in 2008. Only difference is that today that $7.25/hr is even further from a living wage than it was then. And if you are a new worker, under the age of 20, they can pay you a "training" wage of only $4.25/hr.

I've spent thousands of hours designing in 3D but I never designed a boat other than small modifications of my own 70's fishing boat

Though it has a 10 degree hull I doubt that the mold was originally intended for fishing boats

Anyhow, while I was spending my vacation extending my boat, it got me thinking, I should be able to draw a boat in 3D and just have it printed in a scaled down size and fitted with some simple RC engine and I can make a cheap model testing
