For my Tascam reel to reel i used a Tascam dbx. Still in need of major maintenance, havent found anybody to work on it. On the Technics rs1500, i’ve used an early dbx type II (still analog).

I used a Portastudio back in the 90's but I recall it was quite noisy, even with dbx, but my experience wasn't much more than a week with it. I'd like a Tascam 38 or similar reel to reel, but I fear it would be way too expensive for me.

@f_dion @paulrickards BTW, what is your experience with the dbx 150x? I agree that the wiring is messy and a pain in the neck, but the end result is quite good. I am more limited by my (cheap) mixer than by the recorder now. The sound is amazing and I couldn't hear any "pumping" artifacts someone seems to complain when using dbx.

@paulrickards also used it in two track mode on one of the #jamuary piece, recording first two tracks, then flipping the tape over and recording two new tracks while the previous two played backward. I don't think I enabled dbx on that one. Can't even remember which track it was

Many flaws in such circuits can have relatively simple origins, for instance I would check the electrolytic capacitors, then follow the signal path, see if the whistle is in one particular channel or both, compare them. The usual troubleshooting routine.
@f_dion @paulrickards Hey dbx talk! I have one, along with a TEAC reel to reel, both of which are from my dad who bought them in late 70s early 80s.
Our dbx developed a problem as I recall, where it would sound great with any content, but when sound volume dipped below a certain threshold, such as the silence between pieces, the dbx would encode an annoying whistle.
Never figured it out, and I think period repairs were for naught. Stopped using it. Thoughts?

Never mind, I figured it out: For whatever reason, it wasn't reloading the CSS until I changed theme and then changed back. So I wasn't doing anything wrong, and my changes were taking effect, I just couldn't see them by only refreshing the page.
