As some have pointed out, the advice to remove "everything after the ? is a bit short-sighted, trust me, I understand what a url query is, I've done this shit for years.

But yes, for the layperson, the target audience for this infographic, that part is bad advice. Stick to removing si=* and utm parameters.

Wanna see a neat trick? All that shit past the ?, the entire query string is ALL BULLSHIT. Its all source identifiers and marketing data that tells amazon, and anyone who clicks that link how you got to that item.

But if you literally nuke the ? and everything after it:

you get to the same item.

Same applies for some other e-commerce sites as well: Walmart:

Best advice I can give you is that if you're note sure nuking the entire query string won't work, try removing one parameter at a time, see what happens. Be curious.

small correction: not everything after the “?” symbol can be removed without issue, it’s more nuanced. for example, consider these links:

• youtube.com/watch?v=MAnhcUNHRW…
• google.com/search?q=what%27s%2…

these links were obtained by copying them from the address bar. none of them have any tracking information! if you remove everything after “?” they will no longer work. I think it’s usually possible to tell when a link is like this, because the paths before the “?” don’t contain any relevant information (/viewtopic.php, /watch, /search). in such cases if you want to remove possible tracking information you have to use your intuition to tell which querystring keys are tracking info and which ones are actually useful.

@lproven While sites that still use query strings for core functionality are less common thanks to the idea that google placed higher value on keywords not in the query string, I'm not sure it's a safe universal that all query strings can be removed without issue.

For sure variables like si or utm_source though. Always worth quickly testing a cut down URL to ensure it works as expected still.

@ZySoua Query parameters can sometimes be actually useful/necessary depending on the backend.

So "everything after ?" is wrong.

BTW what I was looking at was Rindler red-shift which is caused by acceleration.

Doppler shifting is someone everyone whose ever heard a police siren knows: Higher pitch when it's coming toward you, lower pitch when it's going away. With light, higher pitch = blueshift, lower pitch = redshift.

A type of "weird" redshift is when you accelerate (e.g. in a dragster) and you emit light from the back of your dragster to the front, it shifts even though both emitter and receiver are going the same speed.

But it's kind of self-evident why this happens: The time it takes for light to get from one point to another is longer if they're moving with one in front of the other, because light can't go any faster than the speed of light, so it has more time to catch up to the moving target.

So the distance between two points IN LIGHT-SECONDS is greater if they're moving faster, well, if they're accelerating then the speed they're moving when the light leaves the emitter is less than the speed they're moving when the light hits the receiver, so you get classic doppler redshift because the distance changed while the light was in transit.

Tend to agree, all of the "wow spooky weird effects" I've encountered so far has been basically different versions of "light has a speed limit"... Which kind of reflects badly on the physics community for making things out to be more complicated than they actually are.
