"grey greta" @rogerwaters does not understand there are some conflicts where it is unwise to choose a side. He prattles in his dotage about human rights yet has derived pleasure from belittling other people his entire life, including wives and bandmates 🙄
counterpunch.org/2025/08/01/th…

People often ask me, "how did you learn all of this stuff?"

And quite frankly, at one point in my life, I did, " ls /usr/bin"

and then read the man page for every single fucking thing in there.

and that attitude never stopped. Hell, that attitude existed for years before that moment. I read everything I can get my hands on.

But, I digress.

A few years later, I knew a thing or two about UNIX.

I read the fucking manual.

When I buy a new refrigerator, I read the fucking manual.

When I get a new stove, I read the fucking manual.

When my home's furnace stopped working on Dec 24 2012, I blew the technician on the phone's mind away because I had already read the fucking manual and knew what the flashing lights meant. I didn't have a fix from the manual, but based on my description, he lead me to a basic short term solution, got my house warm again, and saved me about $700 in emergency repairs.

Before I ever touched a computer, I was reading the fucking instructions.

I realize it is now high and mighty to place ourselves above end users who.... don't know how to RTFM.

But seriously.... don't sell yourself short.

RTFM will always pay out.

@The Psychotic Network Ferret It's all about staying curious. For me, it's just wanting something, wondering if it's possible, and reading up on related things with the goal in mind of achieving that thing.

A week ago, I'd never even really looked at PHP or CSS. But I wanted to make a theme for my fedi software. Now, I've made two of them, just from looking at the code and asking, "what the hell does that even do?", and reading to find out, a million times.

And breaking things. A lot of breaking things. Not being afraid to make the stuff that already mostly works not work whatsoever in an effort to eventually make it work perfectly.

So hot and muggy this evening. I work outside for 15 minutes and cool off and enjoy another cup of water for 15 minutes, repeat. Maintaining the garden is hard work.

I repaired the air conditioner in my car this afternoon in the blazing heat. Finding the problem required hooking the computer to the car. The diagnostics showed no communications with the air compressor. That's right, the compressor has a CPU and a high voltage motor inverter inside.

The connector looked good, so I did the other wiring troubleshooting trick of pulling the wires if there's one broken. And yes, I found two broken communication wires. I soldered and heat shrink sealed them, reinstalled everything, vacuumed the system for an hour, then charged the specified refrigerant.

And the air was cold. All electric and quiet. The computer in the car was amazing, showing the evaporator had two temperature sensors, one for the refrigerant inside the evaporator and one on the fins. The expanding refrigerant temperature was computer set at freezing and the fin temperature was a few degrees above that to prevent ice accumulation. It showed the compressor running at 5000 rpm and over two kilowatts. There were dozens of other sensors displayed too. I was a total nerd and reading them all while adjusting the temperature.

The sun has set and the house battery is now charging the yard tool batteries. I plan on setting up a hammock on the porch and lay in front of the fan. The playful raccoons and opossums should be out to join me again tonight. They love finishing off what's left of the bird food I left on the ground. The nocturnal animals are amazing and friendly. Even the skunks. Fireflies and glow bugs are out too. Feels delightful to be alive off grid and away🌌

I've lived in my #RV now for two full years and it took me until today to discover I had an electrical outlet and USB jacks on the other side of my bed. I'm still trying to figure out how I didn't notice this until now.

#Winter is going to be so much more organized now considering I can plug one of the electric blanket controllers on that side of the bed and have the other on the other side of the bed.
