Last summer we reported on the repeated arsons that ravaged the agricultural enclave of the Palestinian village of Husan, swallowed by the massive ultra-Orthodox settlement of Beitar Illit. That story is part of a wider pattern - settlers’ arsons across the West Bank.
In recent years, settlers have set hundreds of fires. At first, the targets were cars, shops, agricultural structures, equipment, and sometimes mosques. But increasingly, the fires have been aimed at agricultural lands — especially olive groves and orchards, like those in the enclave around Beitar Illit. Settlers, one might say, have “discovered fire”.
The logic is simple: if there are no trees, Palestinians have no reason to go there. Once Palestinians stop coming, settlers can take over the land with ease. Later, with the help of corrupt officials and legal advisers planted by #Smotrich inside the Civil Administration, the authorities might declare the land as “state land,” since, after all, it’s “uncultivated”.
Global warming and prolonged drought have made arson an even easier and more effective weapon. This is compounded by the fact that Palestinians have been barred by settlers and the army for years from entering vast agricultural areas. Because they cannot access and cultivate their lands, annual wild vegetation grows unchecked among the abandoned orchards and groves. By summer, it dries out and becomes the perfect fuel for any arsonist.
Here is just a partial list of settlements where, in recent years, we have seen large swaths of Palestinian farmland devastated by fire: Modi’in Illit, Asfar, Itamar, Yitzhar, Kedumim, Tekoa, Shilo — and most recently, in the area of the especially violent outposts of “Malachei HaShalom.” There, settlers did not wait long; they are already preparing the land that they set on fire for renewed cultivation.
