"...it is perhaps worth while to noite that miniare meant to work with minium (this is, either orange lead or red sulphide of mercury), and that a person who worked with minium was called a miniator, and the things that he was to miniate were called miniatura. So miniatrues were originally the paragraph signs and versals and capitals and headings, and so on, which were to be put in red in manuscripts. The men who put these in sometimes did illustrative and decorative drawings and paintings besides, and these came to be called miniatures too. And, finally, because they were only incidental, and therefore usually rather small, the word miniature came to mean "diminutive.""

You bet I'm going to be effusing about this little fact to anyone who will listen at work tomorrow

"We have no appetite for robust, rich excess. The spirit of pageantry leaves us when we look at pictures. We fear the sun, we choose the gentle shade, we like our gilding rubbed and dulled and worn, and our silver oxidized; and cowering under the topis of our sensitive aesthetic consciousness, we prefer not to believe in the stark brilliance, the garish, gaudy sunshine that the Middle Ages revelled in. We care more for subtle harmony than for triumphant, gorgeous brightness; but we forget that there are harmonies of midday as well as harmonies of dawn and dusk."

— Daniel V. Thompson: The Materials and Techniques of Medieval Painting, p. 100

This ranks in my all-time impassioned rants and easily places Thompson on my dead-or-alive dinner party invite list.

⚡️📱 NEW - Schools across the country are requiring students to lock their phones in a phone pouch for the entire school day, can unlock the pouch at the end of the day.

Teachers and principals say phones in the classroom are becoming too much of a distraction.

“The last couple years, we left it up to the teachers to kind of govern their classrooms,” said Danville High School Principal Jacob Bretz.

“We were just running into the constant battle that temptation of that phone being accessible in the pocket, wondering do I have a message, feeling the notifications go off and the urge to check them.”

Students are required to put all cellphones, ear buds and smart watches in the magnetically locked pouches at the start of the school day.

At the end of the school day, the students are allowed to unlock the pouch.

Illustrating every legendary creature in Wisconsin folklore: The Accordianteater, the Callopode, the Duck-Footed Dum-Dum, and the Gazunk.

These were four different fearsome critters from the legends of Wisconsin's lumber camps which lumberjacks used to explain the strange music they heard out in the woods. Why were they hearing strange music in the woods, you might ask? Well... I don't have a good answer for you.

Anyways both the Callopode and Gazunk could be used to explain flute-like sounds. The Duck-Footed Dum-Dum produced a drumming sound. And the Accordianteater made a musical wailing sound.

You seem a lot more well-read about this than I am, so I digress.

I was just sharing my perspective as someone whose friends and family, all with incomes closer to the federal poverty level than the LA County median, will benefit from this change in the way they're marketing.

I freely admit that it's possible my experience is the outlier here and that you're the median customer they're scamming.

Which, reasoning leading up to this aside, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear your bills went up when you don't even have solar panels.

@MLE_online@social.afront.org Time to call and email your Public Service Commissioners/ Public Utility Commissioners and make your opinion heard. ***These are elected officials and represent you!*** SCE wouldn't be able to implement this without the State's PUC/ PSC approval. This sucks! Southern California Edison is changing their fee structure to lower bills for people who use a lot of electricity and raise them for people who use a little.
