I'm concerned enough about the push to use AI (in particular LLMs, of course) in our National Health Service even if they were being run internally. LLMs misfire enough even if they are being managed by people not trying to make a profit but simply trying (perhaps mistakenly) to drive down costs.

I am sure health insurance / medical industry would not want to push people to one hospital or another based on their insurance status / social score / whatever.
This is one of those situations where life should be like a cartoon in that as soon as somebody proposes an asinine idea like this a long red and white striped crook cane shoots in from the side and yanks them out of the frame to points unknown.
I’ll never shit on 911 operators, the information they provide is always critical, but the info isn’t always accurate because humans under stress are poor narrators. Sometimes you get a full accurate history, sometimes not one detail is right. LLMs replacing humans here wouldn’t necessarily kill people, but it would make the first responder’s job a lot harder. An LLM triaging (at any time) would absolutely kill people.
If this would only be for cases where 911 lines are overloaded with too many emergency calls for on-call staff to handle, sure, that’s still better than not getting through at all. But replacing 911 operators? I would not want to carry such a responsibility when these systems fail…

ems/911 systems have been already doing a lot of work with automatic dispatch and intake over the last 5-10 years. lots of state-machines, crow fly and turn by turn algorithms have been in play. even the intake call with live triage is automated to where any layman can dispatch and coordinate.
llms in my view are not a good fit for this sort of thing, but countless people have poor operators when seconds matter.
I think this would be the point at which I'd start asking the recruiters about their poor life choices and if they realize they can just quit their soul-crushing jobs and find something less evil to do.
Just like most hotlines already are llm driven. But hey, its super nice to bee in a "I want to talk to a human" discussion for several minutes before getting actual help.
