If you're a self-described moderate, there's something you will notice when you sit down to consider the media put out by reactionaries, versus the media put out by the radical left.

Reactionary content is blatantly harmful. It provokes fear, either directly or indirectly encourages hatred, and support of hateful and damaging people. It's what their ideology (or, technically, lack thereof) is built on.

Radical progressive, #communist, etc. content may offend your sensibilities — did that person really just say "Stalin did nothing wrong"? — but it isn't dangerous. You might think I'm completely out of my mind for my support of North Korea, but that isn't hurting people: Even if you fully believe that the DPRK is imprisoning and torturing its citizens en masse, my support for the 'regime' couldn't possibly make that any better or any worse. The most I could do is convince you that that isn't the truth, and redirect your outrage onto more pressing (and real) matters — onto creating a better world by caring about people.

So while I may inspire the same kinds of feelings in you as a fascist might, if you're a centrist, that's where the similarities end: I think we should forcibly depose our capitalist oligarchs. They think that we should defend those capitalist oligarchs (via the system they have created) to the death — that is, the death of all the minorities they fear and hate. It won't hurt you, or anyone else, to read with your eyes what I have to say, or even share my media, even if you vehemently disagree with it; but sharing reactionary media does direct and measurable harm — unless you count the bottom line of a billionaire.

Sure. It's a small group of people who are defined by the power that they wield and refuse to surrender. The difference between that and reactionary celebrations of genocide is that the ruling class can simply stop being the ruling class. You'll never meet a socialist who says that if a capitalist gives up their capital — stops being a capitalist ­— then they still get the wall.

Indeed, when the Communist Party of China overthrew the emperor, they just had him join the working class as a normal person. Though he of course was not initially happy about this, he ended up becoming quite a celebrated communist himself.

Do you think, if the fascists got everything they wanted, they would give you any such opportunity? You can't give up being black, or trans, or being of Islamic or Jewish heritage like you can give up being a capitalist; and for that, you simply become the next target of fear and hatred.

Gavin's main talent is identifying a cause people belive in and getting out in front of it to make it look like he's leading the movement. But everything he does is ultimately about him and his success. That can make him useful politically and help us achieve goals, but I wouldn't ever trust him to do the right thing. But politics make strange bedfellows, and if he's the one standing up to the fascist takeover, I'm going to cheer for him to win that fight the whole way. Then I'll fight him over respecting trans rights and means-testing Medi-Cal. That's apparently the best we can get these days.
