Custom Classes & Pages in Themes?

Sorry to keep bugging the @Friendica Developers but the documentation seems pretty incomplete and outdated.

How would I create a custom class with a corresponding template at a custom path in a theme?

What I want to do is implement a completely customized type of "hovercard."

I don’t want to just add a custom "hovercard.tpl" to my theme. I also need to modify the data coming into it from /src/Content/Widget/Hovercard.php

I want to call this custom implementation a "minicard" and I need to feed it additional data "hovercard.tpl" does not receive from “Hovercard.php”.

I have already figured out how to intercept the feeds using Hook::register('template_vars'…); and by including my custom "minicard.tpl" inside my custom "wall_thread.tpl" file. And that works but it means my reworking of template_vars happens, and the "minicard" HTML is repeated for every person and is part of the feed HTML whether anyone ever looks at the "minicard" or not.

The only real plus is I can show a card with pure CSS, there's no JS/jQuery required because the cards are already in the HTML.

But I’m trying to make this new theme more efficient and performant. This feels like the opposite of that.

So, ideally, what I want to do is create a custom "Minicard" class inside a "Minicard.php" file that uses my "minicard.tpl" template, and like it does in the "Frio" theme this only happens if someone mouses over a profile link or clicks on a profile photo.

I have a version of the jQuery code working without tooltip.js or Bootstrap. That’s not the problem. But when it tries to go get the "minicard" HTML by sending: https//friendica.dev/contact/minicard?url=contact/redir/5&=175571665873 the XHR gives me a "404 Page not found" error.

In my theme’s config.php file I have tried loading my custom class "Minicard.php" file using:
require_once __DIR__ . '/php/Minicard.php'; and that doesn’t seem to work. So I thought maybe it needs to be similarly placed to the "Hovercard.php" in the Friendica core, so I also tried:
require_once __DIR__ . '/php/Content/Widget/Minicard.php'; but that doesn’t work either.

Even though the "hovercard.tpl" appears to live just inside the /templates folder I’ve also tried putting my "minicard.tpl" template inside templates/contact/minicard.tpl but that doesn’t seem to make a difference either.

But no matter what I've tried I just keep getting a "404 Page Not Found" error.

Do I need to define that custom path somewhere? If so where? How?

I can't really find anything in the docs about doing this and the only example I’ve found picking through the code is the custom /php/Image.php class file in the “Frio” theme that is loaded by the theme’s "config.php" file. But that class doesn’t do anything with a template.

Ultimately if nobody can clue me in or I can’t figure this out my new theme will at the very least have the same set-up for hovercards as "Frio" does. But I was really hoping to improve upon it.

I understand the situation, and know some people feel locked in, but on the other hand, we should be discerning & there are lots of options

I am also holding myself to account, including using independent platforms more often and shifting away from Big Tech

I think all the time about @pluralistic 's giant teddy bear-at-the-carnival analogy when I think of Substack. The writers I don't forgive are the ones who claim to be anti-fascist. Substack isn't even close to being the only option.

The only big platform I'm on is Discord. As of my YouTube boycott this month, I'm done with Google. I feel so clean, LOL. But it's hard and takes time to get started because those platforms have wormed their way into everyone's everything.
