Thessaloniki, Greece: Bomb Attack Against the Chief Prison Guard of Diavata Prison
A powerful explosion from an explosive device shook the Analipsis area of Thessaloniki in the early hours of Saturday July 26th, causing extensive material damage. The explosion occurred at 2:10 a.m. at the entrance of an apartment building on 19 Makedononachon Street. The powerful shock wave, which according to residents was heard more than a kilometer away.
The president of the Panhellenic Federation of Prison Officers and chief guard of Diavata Prison lives in the apartment building, a fact that has raised alarm bells among the authorities. The cops are focusing their investigation on the possibility that the bomb attack was linked to his position, that it was directed as venegance against him, with possible ‘terrorist’ or ‘mafia’ motivations. In the past there used to be a police guard at this location, but it had been withdrawn.
Raids were conducted by the armed cops of the anti-terrorst EKAM at Diavata prison in response to the attack, but as of yet no links to who commited the attack have been found outside or inside the prison.

You can literally grab your hard drive or SSD, plug it into another completely different PC, and still enjoy a fully functional install, with all your files, applications, and configurations.
Since the drivers for all the hardware Linux supports are in the kernel, you don't depend on what the manufacturer has preinstalled on your computer, and you don't have anything to install either when you move your disk to another PC.
The second thing is the ability to replace parts of your operating system with others, that fit your needs better. Windows and macOS are one size fits all operating systems; they're designed to provide a good enough experience for everyone. On Linux, you can pick a distro that fits your needs out of the box, or you can replace components. Get a other file manager, get a different window manager, change the init system...
Third, we have the live USB, or Live CD. This is something only Linux based operating systems do. You slap a reasonably sized ISO onto a reasonably sized USB drive, and you boot from it, and you get a fully usable system.
Not only can you try before you install, which is crucial when you're deciding what will run on your PC, but you can also have a distro that ONLY runs through a Live USB, like Tails, which means your whole system is in your pocket, and you can boot from it from any computer you want.
Have you tried running Windows on a 10 year old computer? Or even older? The latest, still supported version of Windows? Good luck, without spending time building a custom ISO to debloat the OS, and crossing your fingers for drivers to exist for your old hardware and that specific version of Windows. On a Mac, it's even less doable, the latest version of macOS supports at most the mac pro from 2013, and that was a very powerful, expensive device when it released.
On Linux? No problem, pick a distro that's lightweight, and enjoy your old computer like it was new. You'll get patches, security fixes, the very latest applications if you want them, but your system will run fine. If what you want is an OS that occupies the least amount of space possible? You also can.
Fifth thing you can do on Linux but not on Windows or macOS? Driverless printer support. On Linux, printers are detected automatically, and work out of the box. No driver CD to try and fit in your computer that doesn't have a CD drive anymore, no need to download anything from the internet.
You plug it in, and you print.
Next is UI and UX customization. Windows and macOS can't be customized visually. Not out of the box, not more than light or dark theme, and an accent color. If you want to change the icons, the general theme, the layout of the desktop, you can't.
With Linux, all major desktop environments let you change how your system looks or works. Yes, even GNOME. With extensions, and themes, you can have a radically different experience than the default.
Next, is no vendor Lock-in. On Linux, you're free to move to anything else. Once your distro is end of life, and won't receive any patches, you can upgrade for free to the next version, or, if you don't like that new version, you can also just decide to change distributions entirely.
On Linux, you could even BUY extended support to keep a distro alive and patched even when the distro's developer have abandoned it.

Government made acts and statutes are not law!
They are a rule of a corporation, and if you do not work for that corporation, their acts and statutes do not apply to you!

Any human being who wishes to claim any authority over me must first prove they exist above God; that they are God; that they are between me and God; or that they have a document upon the face of which can be found the verifiable signature of God.
Failure to first do one of the above mentioned things means all claims to authority is abandoned or is unlawful. Attempting to exercise any authority over me without first fulfilling one of the four above mentioned requirements is an Unlawful act of fraud and/or extortion!

Subway rolls ruled too sugary to be bread
Under Ireland's VAT Act of 1972, ingredients in bread such as sugar and fat should not exceed 2% of the weight of flour in the dough.
\
The five judges, who were considering an appeal by Bookfinders Ltd, a Subway franchisee based near Galway, concluded that in Subway sandwiches the sugar content is around 10% of the flour in the dough for both white and wholegrain rolls.
\
It is not the first time Subway's bread has been in the spotlight. In 2014, the company announced it was removing azodicarbonamide - the so-called "yoga mat" chemical - from its rolls.
\
The chemical is used to whiten flour and improve the condition of dough. It is also used to make vinyl foam products such as yoga mats and the underlay for carpets.
\
Subway stopped using the agent six years ago but the
US Food and Drug Administration continues to approve the use of the chemical
in produce.

in reply to Gerry McGovern • • •The chart shows 2-fold increase compared to 2019. This is nothing. If you weren't worried about Google's water consumption back then, but suddenly are worried now, it's because of AI hate trend, and not because it's a real issue.
Globally, the daily water usage for beef production amounts to approximately 2.49 trillion litres.
Greg Glockner
in reply to Gerry McGovern • • •@briankrebs Note that water is not “used up”: a data center generally puts water in a closed loop where it is circulated inside the data center. Thus, you need water to build a data center but typically little to operate one.
My guess is the growth in water use is tracking the growth in data centers, particularly with all the new systems for generative AI.
Gerry McGovern
in reply to Greg Glockner • • •@gglockner
Not quite true. There are two water systems in a typical data center. One is closed loop and runs around the servers. This water needs to be regularly changed due to various build-ups of microbes, materials. It's full of chemicals and needs to be treated as waste.
When these closed loop pipes get hot, water goes out to cooling towers where vast quantities of water are sprayed on them in a process called evaporative cooling, adding to global crisis of the land drying out
@briankrebs
Greg Glockner
in reply to Gerry McGovern • • •@briankrebs @marijn I can’t speak for all data centers, but I know the one I built over my career. Due to confidentiality, I cannot give all details but I can say that we were the largest tenant in a Seattle colocation facility.
We had a closed loop cooling system that recirculated water. I wasn’t in charge of cooling so I can’t say whether water needed occasional replenishment.
I should have asked about cooling when I visited the supercomputers at Oak Ridge!
tschenkel
in reply to Greg Glockner • • •@CDubbs
That used to be the case in older installations with lower heat density. In those we had a closed loop liquid cooling system (not necessarily water) which transported the heat from the computer racks to be dumped into the environment by a liquid to air heat exchanger. So there was no water "used" apart from replacing the cooling liquid every now and then.
The problem with liquid to air heat exchangers is, that they need to be big and are expensive.
What they do to save that money is use a smaller heat exchanger and spray water on them. The evaporation energy (latent heat) of water is high and evaporation cooling is one of the most efficient cooling methods.
So, the only reason they choose not to use liquid to air heat sinks is cost. Since water use is not regulated it's just cheaper to use evaporation cooling.
In a lobby free political environment there would be regulations that would outlaw evaporation cooling.
Note: yes, the water is not "used" but simply returned to the atmosphere and thus the water cycle. But that is the problem: the local aquifers run dry and a flash flood or hurricane may occur somewhere else. More water in the atmosphere is a driver for extreme weather events.
tschenkel
in reply to Greg Glockner • • •@gglockner @briankrebs @CDubbs
Btw, we still build environmentally friendlier data centres with closed loop air sink systems that don't use water - mostly for scientific workloads. But if your optimisation function is "save money at all cost" then you won't choose those.
Greg Glockner
in reply to tschenkel • • •SIEM Shady
in reply to Gerry McGovern • • •Genuine question, what does "consumed" mean in this context?
Is it returned to sewage processing for recycling?
Is it hoarded in pipes and pumps in these volumes?
Is it hopelessly tainted by additives and requires hazmat disposal?
Is it allowed to evaporate off and rejoin the precipitation cycle?
Not saying it isn't a problem, just trying to understand what type of problem(s).

To cool the pipes down they spray huge quantities of water on them, much of which evaporates. This is a big problem because land masses are drying out, and because of hotter weather, atmosphere can hold more and more water.

Problem 1: Hoards water in pipes, pumps, and reservoirs.
Problem 2: Sewage treatement plans may not be able to handle the load of the return flow depending on how maintenance is done.
Problem 3: We're forcing evaporation of water that wouldn't normally occur, and the precipitation cycle is already under stress due to rising global temps.
