“You’re going to die either way. If you go to Zikim, you’ll die. If you stay in your tent, you’ll die. You’ll die from hunger, or you’ll be shot. It’s a trap” testimony from Gaza
"United Nations officials said in no uncertain terms that the famine in Gaza is a result of Israeli policy, with the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Volker Turk calling it “the direct result of actions taken by the Israeli government”"

I was at the bar last night when a fat woman in a sleeveless sundress strolled in raising her right arm high. She had an exceptionally hairy armpit, which she displayed without hesitation as she called out, “Which one of you fine gentlemen will buy a lady a drink?”
The room fell into an awkward silence as patrons suddenly found their drinks and table very interesting.
I was at the end of the bar heavily intoxicated. I banged my fist on the counter and slurred, “Get the ballerina a drink!”
The bartender, laughed a little, poured her a drink, which she downed. Not missing a beat, she repeated her performance, raising her arm and declaring, “Who’s buying the next round?”
Once again, I enthusiastically pounded the bar and yelled, “Another drink for the ballerina!”
Unable to contain his curiosity, the bartender leaned over and whispered, “Hey, it’s your money, but why do you keep calling her a ballerina?”
I turned to him with a lopsided grin and said, “Any woman who can lift her leg that high has gotta be a ballerina!”

do the people getting mad at bsky about this know that pornhub has been inaccessible for people in texas for over a year for the same exact reason?

Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users. While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

@jilotta to name a few more examples
I refuse to use mobile apps for things that don't need to be apps. I refuse to use a banking app. I always carry cash around. I prefer payments in Monero over fiat transfers. I refuse to use stock Android distros. I refuse to yield to "convenience" that would lock me in a company's grasp.

I don't actually care about "software freedom" or w/e. I am a code cursewitch. I can make the code do what I want whether they want me to or not. It's just that proprietary software just breaks more. It's almost never tested. It is almost always a nightmare to debug. The devs are usually impossible to contact.

And oftentimes, the extra effort of having to use a payment processor simply just makes me use something else that's less effort.

I'm thinking i will soon need to get a burner phone for the android stuff im forced to use, eg whatsapp and tax office signin app, then have a linux phone for all the useful stuff actually wanted.

In Australia, almost everyone pays with credit or debit card. I try to use cash, and notice:

- shop owners are so grateful to be paid in cash

- shop employees are terrible at working out how much change to give, often count it wrong even when the register or tablet tells them the amount. Due to never getting any practice.

@brettm in Russia, the bank doesn't get a percent anyway (afaik),

the government is way more invasive so not paying tax is more difficult,

and most don't care about the big brother that much (so what if they spy on me? I've got nothing to hide! do *you* have something to hide from the government???? what are you, a fascist?)

so none of the points apply, and credit/debit cards win because of convenience

sberbank (the biggest bank in Russia) also has this thing where you can "pay with your face". the bank literally collects your biometric data and connects it to your bank account. not like they have all of your personal data and all sorts of ID anyway. not like its a huge security hole

@jilotta this conscious awareness of exactly what I rely on and making explicit choices while knowing the tradeoffs is what makes sure that I don't end up locked in or exploited by some company. When Google and YouTube started enshittifying, I just got rid if my Google account and started watching YouTube less. I simply do not rely on any of their products.

Now, the enshittification of the Google search engine is a problem, and while it does not impact me too badly, since most of the software things I do I just figure out myself without looking them up since oftentimes it's easier and faster and less error-prone, and for other fields I usually have fedi & friends, but there are problems it is causing me. Just, to a lesser degree.
What is concerning is that I did start using ChatGPT mostly as a search engine now, which annoys me. There are certain things that are much easier to delve into if I get a surface overview of things that are hard to find. This is an actual problem, and I know it will bite me in the ass if I don't figure out a proper solution soon. ChatGPT is a temporary solution and I expect it to stop being viable for this in the coming months or years. I have been working on an alternative search engine, but been lacking the spoons.

I don't use Google Maps, I use OpenStreetMap. My phone doesn't have any of the proprietary Google services or apps. The only proprietary stuff it has are the qcom etc driver blobs, and Discord.

Discord is another funsie. I am in the process of working on and migrating to probably XMPP or something else (maybe DeltaChat) if Discord rolls out something even worse than it already has. And Discord is not even the primary way to contact me, hasn't been the past 4 or so years. I even just entirely dipped for 2 years at one point. And I can pretty easily dip now, too. Most beings I care about I have other means of contact to.

So, it's about evaluating the benefit of staying as well as the cost of quitting a given service, and making sure that the cost remains as low as possible.

I just made a few improvements to #GAGSProject! they’re really just small UI things to hopefully make it clearer how GAGS works - like how to find the blacklist textbox and what the tabs in the search results do

my next project is going to be much bigger though: currently GAGS will only fetch the first 100 results when you search for something, because it has to fetch all of the results right away and that’s really slow (this is before it does the gender filtering btw)

but, I think there might be a way for me to lazily fetch results as you click “next page” instead. I have two different ideas for how to do this and I’m going to see if I can make either of them work. if so, GAGS should theoretically be able to fetch as many results as you want and it shouldn’t even be any slower than its current behavior
