To her many critics, her appointment was just one more step on the shameful path that CBS has trod since Donald Trumpwas elected to a second term.
The network caved to the US president when its parent company, Paramount,
settled a lawsuit it could have won,
sending millions of dollars for a future presidential library.
Trump claimed that he was harmed during last year’s presidential campaign by the editing (actually, quite routine) of a 60 Minutes interview of his then rival Kamala Harris.
Not only did the company settle the case, but now it has decided not to edit taped interviews with political figures on its Sunday morning Face the Nation
– a dubious idea at best, and another piece of capitulation to Trump.
The longtime executive producer of 60 Minutes quit a few months ago, saying he feared the loss of his prized editorial independence;
and the network’s evening newscast ratings continue to lag their competitors.
Recently, the company named an ombudsman for CBS News
– someone with no news experience
– to monitor claims of bias, but with no arrangement to communicate regularly to the public, as normal news ombudsmen or public editors have.
Others were much harsher than Tofel in their criticism, noting that Paramount paid an astonishing $150m for Weiss’s site, Free Press.
Paramount is led these days by David Ellison, the son of Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people,
and Weiss is very much his pick to led CBS News;
the corporate press release said she will, among other things, “reshape editorial priorities”.
She will report directly to Ellison, rather than to the CBS News president, a more traditional arrangement.
“Like Musk’s acquisition of Twitter,
the deal can be understood as part of a broader elite project to smudge the lenses through which many people see the world,”
wrote the Defector’s Patrick Redford.
“By installing Weiss, the richest people in the world have taken another step toward ushering in the toothless, acquiescent future of mainstream media they’ve always wanted.”

During the early hours of October 9, the Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas announced that an agreement had been reached that would lead to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
According to details declared by the group, its non-negotiables, which include the complete end of the war, the withdrawal of occupation forces, the entry of humanitarian aid, and a prisoner exchange, have been realized.
Hamas expressed its appreciation to the mediators, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, for their efforts and contributions to achieving a ceasefire deal, and urged the United States to compel the regime to uphold its obligations as per the truce.
Hamas’ statement also issued a heart-warming salute to the Palestinian people, from Gaza to al-Quds and the West Bank, and those outside the homeland, expressing immense gratitude to their unparalleled pride, heroism, and honor.
“We salute our people who confronted the fascist occupation projects that targeted them and their national rights. The great sacrifices and steadfastness of our people have thwarted the Israeli occupation’s plans of subjugation and displacement,” the statement read.
Hamas lastly renewed its pledge to continue confronting the Israeli occupation, vowing “not to abandon our people’s national rights until freedom, independence, and self-determination are achieved.”
Zaher Jabarin, head of the Martyrs and Prisoners’ Office of the Islamic Resistance Movement – Hamas, said that the movement submitted a list of Palestinian prisoners to mediators. He explained that the list followed the criteria previously agreed upon at the early stages of negotiations.
“We are awaiting final agreement on the names, as we prepare to announce them to our people via the Prisoners’ Information Office,” Jabarin underlined.
The Hamas official renewed the movement’s pledge to free every last Palestinian political prisoner from captivity.
“Hamas renews its pledge to our brave prisoners and their families that they will remain at the heart of its priorities, and it will not rest until the last prisoner is freed,” he concluded.
Following the announcement, senior Hamas official Izzat al-Rishq said the newly reached ceasefire agreement was a direct result of “the great sacrifices and legendary patience of our people, as well as the strength and steadfastness of the resistance.”
He emphasized that the agreement is rooted in Hamas’s “historic responsibility toward our great people” and reflects a firm commitment to their legitimate rights, and is a culmination of the resistance’s achievements.
Al-Rishq added that the deal represents “a national achievement par excellence,” one that illustrates the unity of the Palestinian people and their alignment with resistance as the path to confront the Israeli occupation.
He noted that during all stages of the negotiations, their “hearts and eyes were with our people in Gaza,” affirming that the blood spilled and sacrifices made have bound them with “a pledge of loyalty and sacrifice.”
Concluding his remarks, al-Rishq stated that what the occupation failed to secure through “genocide and starvation over two full years, it could not attain through negotiations.”
Earlier, sources within the Palestinian Resistance had confirmed to Al Mayadeen that Hamas and the Palestinian Resistance factions had agreed to Trump’s proposal.
According to Palestinian Resistance affairs analyst Hani al-Dali, the ceasefire is expected to begin at 12:00 PM on Thursday.

The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, published a tribute photo of Martyr of the Ummah Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the late Secretary-General of Hezbollah, with the message: “Gaza will never forget those who stood by it.”
Alongside the image, al-Qassam quoted Sayyed Nasrallah’s words: “We are here to achieve victory for Palestine, for the oppressed Gaza Strip, for the West Bank, and for the people of Lebanon. Since October 8, we have entered a different battle and opened the support front for the al-Aqsa Flood, because it is the battle of the Ummah.”
The statement was widely circulated across social media, where many saw it as a renewed affirmation of the shared struggle between the Lebanese and Palestinian resistance fronts against the zionist occupation.
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated on September 27, 2024, in a zionist irstrike targeting Hezbollah’s central command headquarters in Beirut’s southern suburb. His assassination marked one of the most significant escalations in the region since the start of the Zionist war on Gaza.
A year earlier, on October 8, 2023, Hezbollah had launched its first operations in support of Gaza following the start of Operation al-Aqsa Flood. The Islamic Resistance in Lebanon struck zionist radar positions and military outposts in Zibdin and Ruwaisat al-Alam with artillery and guided missiles.
In a statement at the time, Hezbollah said: “On the path to liberating our remaining occupied Lebanese land, and in solidarity with the valiant Palestinian resistance and the steadfast, struggling Palestinian people, the groups of Martyr Commander Imad Mughniyeh attacked three Israeli occupation sites in the occupied Shebaa Farms, hitting them directly.”
Hezbollah issued a statement Tuesday marking the second anniversary of Operation al-Aqsa Flood, reaffirming its “unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause” and vowing to remain aligned with “the steadfast and resilient people of Palestine.”
Describing the October 7 operation as a “battle of sacrifice, liberation, will, and steadfastness,” the statement declared that Hezbollah “renews its pledge to stand with the Palestinian people who, through patience and perseverance mixed with tragedy and pain, have taught the world the highest lessons of pride and dignity in the face of the most criminal Israeli entity, supported by a brutal American administration.”
Hezbollah said that the confrontation, which began in 2023, “revealed from its very first moment the true face of the criminal Zionist entity, stripped of any human quality and backed by the arrogant American tyrant.”
The statement accused both the Israeli regime and Washington of “trampling every law, international resolution, and humanitarian consideration,” and of “violating the sovereignty of nations and massacring the people of Gaza through starvation and displacement.” Hezbollah added that the Israeli campaign “has laid bare its expansionist and aggressive schemes.”
“Greetings to the free and steadfast people of Palestine, rooted in their land, who faced the Zionist killing machine with their bare chests,” the statement continued. “Greetings to the starving children of Gaza, the bereaved mothers, and the free hearts that still embrace hope for imminent relief.”
Hezbollah extended thanks to its allies and supporters, particularly the Islamic Republic of Iran under the leadership of Sayyed Ali Khamenei, as well as to Yemen, Iraq, and all “free peoples of the world who raised the voice of Palestine high and carried the cries of Gaza’s children and women to the world.”
Concluding, Hezbollah stated that “this historic occasion will remain immortal, a testimony to a people who rose against an occupier, fought, sacrificed, and endured.” It added: “By God’s will, they will triumph, for they are worthy of victory, and Palestine will return fully to its people despite every conspirator, normalizer, and coward. This is a divine promise, and God never breaks His promise.”

We condemn the Zionist leaders of Israel for the genocide of the Palestinian people. The systematic killing of people and destruction of homes and public infrastructure has been carried with criminal impunity. The destruction of Gaza has resulted in widespread disease and people dying of hunger.
The Zionist state of Israel and the US imperialists aim to drive the Palestinian people out of Gaza and seize their homeland. By choosing to remain in Gaza and defending their homes, families, and communities, the Palestinian people demonstrate courage and determination to resist, and fight for their fundamental right as a people and as a nation.
The Communist Party of the Philippines joins calls for an immediate end to the genocide being carried out by the Zionist state of Israel. The Party reaffirms full solidarity with the Palestinian people’s aspiration for justice, liberation and national self-determination.

Many of the details of the agreement reached after 3 days of indirect talks in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh remain unclear and challenges of implementing its terms are immense.
But in recent days, negotiators have closed gaps between Hamas and Israel over the details of the first phase of the 21-point plan announced by Trump in the White House last week.
It was not immediately certain whether the parties had made any progress on thornier questions about the future of the conflict,
including whether Hamas will demilitarise, as Trump has demanded, and eventual governance of the war-torn territory.
But the agreement, if implemented, would bring the two sides closer than any previous effort to halt a war that had evolved into a regional conflict, drawing in countries such as Iran, Yemen and Lebanon, and reshaping the Middle East.
After the announcement of the deal, Trump told Fox News that the US would play a role in helping to rebuild war-torn Gaza.
“We’ll be involved in helping them make it successful, and helping it stay peaceful,” the president said, adding he was “very confident there’ll be peace in the Middle East.”
