I occasionally test my home page in a text browser. Lynx was my first web browsing experience, way back in 1995 (through the local library). I started prepending "IMAGE" to the alt text so it was clear what was being described.

Not ideal: the light/dark mode switch renders as a nonsense string with a checkbox toggle (not pictured). Otherwise, it's very straightforward and loads quickly and happily.

this isn’t, like, a huge accessibility deal, but just as an fyi… screen readers do announce when users navigate to an image, so appending it to your alt text is going to cause a somewhat annoying repetition for those users. best practice is to only do that sort of thing if you’re specifying what type of image; a photograph, screenshot, etc.

...This study analyzed 865,727 mifepristone abortions from 2017 to 2023, using real-world insurance claims data. It dwarfs the tightly controlled clinical trials that the FDA and abortion pill manufacturers rely on, which involved only 30,966 participants and reported a sanitized adverse event rate of less than 0.5 percent. According to this study, the actual rate is 22 times higher.

The abortion pill is not safe. It never has been. When the FDA first approved mifepristone in 2000, it did so by redefining pregnancy itself as a “serious or life-threatening illness.” That grotesque lie allowed it to be fast-tracked through the approval process—something usually reserved for drugs treating terminal diseases. And since then, the abortion pill has led to the deaths of 7.5 million preborn children. It is also linked to the deaths of at least 36 women and has harmed countless others.

...Today, a woman can obtain mifepristone after a brief online appointment, often with someone who may not even be a licensed physician. Dangerous abortion drugs are shipped directly to her doorstep, leaving her to face severe bleeding, infection, and even life-threatening complications alone in her bathroom. Her baby is often born dead in the toilet. There is no guarantee of follow-up care, and doctors are only required to report complications if the woman dies.

#China #tariffs #Agenda47

China is quietly exempting numerous U.S. imports from its retaliatory tariff on American goods, a sign that the Chinese economy is taking a hit in the trade war with the Trump administration, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

A list circulating among businesses shows that 131 items, including pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals, are not being slapped by China’s tariff as multiple companies have been able to get the products into China without paying a duty, according to Bloomberg. The unconfirmed list makes up 24% of Chinese imports from the United States, worth around $40 billion.

The report comes shortly after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that China’s economy “is slowing down substantially,” adding, “They are the most unbalanced, imbalanced economy in the history of the world.”

TIL you can join DiEM25 from anywhere in the world and then get in touch with a bunch of other likeminded activists on the Discourse site, and get involved, firsthand. How good!

Then, if the people who comprise #DiEM25 are many of the same people comprising #Indivisible, #XR, et al., then all of our leftist groups are sort of inevitably, de facto, working together... aligned... coalescing... !!

ESA unveils longest-ever dataset on forest biomass

image

Above-ground biomass 2022

As the new Biomass satellite settles into life in orbit following its launch on 29 April, ESA has released its most extensive satellite-based maps of above-ground forest carbon to date. Spanning nearly two decades, the dataset offers the clearest global picture yet of how forest carbon stocks have changed over time.

Developed through ESA’s Climate Change Initiative, this new long-term record integrates data from multiple satellite missions – and will soon be further enhanced by data from the Biomass mission itself.

Current legal frameworks can’t protect the oceans from deep-sea mining and the negative impacts on humankind

The international legal order is floundering. The geopolitical and resource policy priorities of the United States are shifting.

These changes now implicate the international framework for governing the seabed: on April 24, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order that moves toward allowing deep-sea mining by the Americans.

Driven by a critical minerals expansionary agenda, the U.S. is considering measures to fast-track approvals for corporations to mine the international seabed.

What is the difference — for marine environments — between excavation under an international legal framework or U.S. domestic law? Both systems permit state and private organizations to mine vulnerable marine ecosystems: does an international framework offer stronger environmental protections than U.S. law?

so wird es kommen

Anti-Zionism is anti-semitism, you say? Sure, that makes sense. How someone prays and what religious beliefs they hold is exactly the same as supporting apartheid and genocide. You can’t even tell them apart; the last time I tried to pray the rosary I got confused and bombed a children’s hospital.

It’s true: there is absolutely no difference whatsoever between opposing a political ideology and opposing the existence of a small religious minority. That’s why it is universally considered racist to criticize an opposing political party. That’s why anyone who tries to engage in a political debate is immediately arrested for committing a hate crime.

Anti-Zionism is anti-semitism. If you don’t support the idea of dropping a western settler-colonialist state on top of a pre-existing civilization and then defending its status quo of apartheid, theft and abuse by any amount of violence necessary, then obviously you support the idea of exterminating millions of Jews in gas chambers.

If you don’t want anyone to commit genocide against Palestinians, then that means you want to commit genocide against Jews. There is no third possibility.

Don’t think we should be sending billions of dollars worth of military explosives to be dropped on hospitals, residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in Gaza? That means you harbor extremely negative emotions toward a small Abrahamic faith.

Think it’s bad to deliberately starve millions of people who are trapped in a giant death camp? Then that means you want to start loading Jews onto trains.

Think it’s wrong to wage a systematic extermination campaign against an entire people because they are a different ethnicity? Then you, sir, are no different from the Nazis.

Anti-Zionism is anti-semitism. Cats are ducks. The Declaration of Independence is spaghetti sauce. The Bronze Age is a foot fetish. There are no differences between any two things. All things are exactly the same as all other things.

The human mind is incapable of making any distinctions of any kind. Turning left is the same as turning right. Drinking water is the same as drinking bleach. Going to the supermarket is the same as killing your dad. This is how we all live our lives. Everyone knows this.

Everything I just said makes perfect sense. Anyone who disagrees is #Hitler.

(RESOLVED) Network is slow after installing Fedora

For context, I just installed Fedora Workstation and I am dual-booting alongside Windows.

For some strange reason, download speeds are hovering around 200 KB/s, and sometimes randomly dropping to below 70KB/s. This occurs when I boot into either Windows or Fedora. Before installing Fedora, my speeds were usually >50MB/s, sometimes a couple hundred MB/s if the network isn’t very busy. This might be an issue with network drivers being weird since I’m dual booting, or maybe I need to manually install drivers for Fedora.

(for comparison my phone, using the same network, has >100MB/s download speeds)

EDIT: I’ve updated to Fedora 42 and network speeds are now in the MB/s again. Not sure what happened. Now it seems that when I install from “flatpak-1” rather than just “flatpak” speeds are great. Also, dnf install has good speeds now.
