@iagox86 @charlvdwalt No, it was actually a really big issue which is why Google incentivized it. ISPs were injecting ads into random webpages, law enforcement and intelligence agencies made frequent use of it, and it was also a massive privacy risk. Almost every service provider has deep packet inspection and can/will monitor everything you do.

because we used to live in a world where ISPs, open wifi networks (cafes, etc) could intercept your HTTP responses and inject javascript/HTML into your browser to force you to see ads and/or attack you
@nuintari @todb @iagox86 @charlvdwalt @pluralistic Frontier (formerly Verizon's west coast network) rewrote Google search results via DNS hijacking to add referral codes to Amazon, etc, and may or may not have added their own ads. Pre SSL, of course. I had a reproducible test case that ran via cron at home so we could see when they turned it off and on.

Also that was after working at AOL and learning their image compression was actually not bad... as long as you didn't dial all the settings down to their lowest values (as they did). So would have been sometime after 2004

Inside a spherical cagelike structure, a small platform slowly spins as if floating. A single, bright lamp illuminates the scene, simulating the Sun. This setup constitutes the European Space Agencyโs brand new facility for the testing of CubeSats โ small satellites, usually no larger than a shoebox and weighing only a few kilograms.
Just like any piece of machinery destined for space, CubeSats undergo rigorous testing on the ground, in conditions resembling space as closely as possible.
Andew Hyslop, ESAโs AOCS engineer, explains: โWe can test attitude control systems separately or integrated in a complete CubeSat. An attitude control system is a combination of sensors, software and actuators that will make sure a CubeSat is in the right orientation when floating in space.โ
To simulate the state of microgravity, the facility relies on an air bearing system โ a device blowing a continuous stream of air upwards and creating a stable, invisibly thin air gap, allowing the platform suspended above it to float.
The CubeSat under test โ or, in this case, its attitude control system โ is mounted on this hovering platform.
โThe system works out its orientation using Sun sensors, a magnetometer and a gyroscope. To stimulate the first, our setup includes a Sun lamp,โ Andrew adds.
โHowever, Sun sensors tend to be susceptible to Earthโs โtrickeryโ โ meaning some of the sunlight reflected from the Earth can be mistakenly interpreted as coming directly from the Sun. To take this effect into account, our facility includes an albedo lamp.โ
Metal coils wrap around the curved bars that form the cage, simulating Earthโs magnetic field inside the structure. โAs the spacecraft orbits our planet, the magnetic field it encounters keeps changing. Our metal coils replicate that.โ
Andrew taps the hovering platform gently to initiate a spin. โTo perform a test, we place the system on the air bearing in its starting orientation and optionally give it an additional tap. Then we let the attitude control system take over, stop the spin and get the platform back into the correct orientation.
โLike most attitude control systems on satellites in low Earth orbit, this one here uses reaction wheels to reorient itself. When these wheels start spinning, the spacecraft will spin in the opposite direction โ according to conservation of angular momentum.
โAdditionally, the floating platform is equipped with small reflective markers, which are being tracked by two cameras fixed to the top of the cage โ this system gives us information of the platformโs true orientation. We can then compare this information to what the platform itself detects, to ensure its measurements are accurate,โ Andrew notes.
The lab team recently finished testing and commissioning the facility to get it ready for its first customers. ESA CubeSat projects will soon be able to make use of it to gain confidence in their attitude control systems before flight.

@cjd @lain glass, steel, and PETE plastic is very recyclable. in theory most other plastics are recycleable it's just an issue of sorting and cleaning them that makes it difficult, and the general public isn't very good at cleaning and sorting so you end up with a lot of trash and unusable stuff mixed in. so the implementations of these single-stream recycling programs are causing problems. this is more of a motivation issue than a technical one.
