My primary OS is Windows (I use it for work) and I have Linux as my second OS. If I upgrade my linux distro to the paid version so I can have more features, will Windows be okay? Thanks I'm a newb
As others have said, there usually is no such thing, and if there is, your distro is probably practically a scam and you should find another.

Some legitimate distros may have extra support available for a cost, but that just means support, not extra features. Also, they sometimes have things like live patching, but that really is more an enterprise grade feature.
I'm using ZorinOS and I really like how simple it is and I want to support the project. If I upgrade to the Pro version then I get more desktop themes/options.
But I understand what you mean. I could just install for example Debian with KDE desktop and have more customizing options for free.
ALL of the listed features from zorin pro have free alternatives, unless you really want microsoft office, screen sharing, adobe premier, etc... just stick with the free version and find free viable alternatives. Libreoffice, kdenlive, etc. How did you land on zorin to begin with? Most new users are recommended to use fedora, ubuntu-gnome, and linux mint. To me, just looking at zorins website they do not share the most basic principles of the linux space (being free and open source). I highly recomend switching, if you could run

This will output the name of your display manager like gnome, kde, etc. The version of zorin you are running is more than certainly using a popular one. Just find a distro that uses the same one. And your user experience will be almost exactly the same. Zorin might have some QOL features but definitely not anything you couldnt implement yourself.
Feel free to reach out here for more help if you run into any brick walls. You already dual booted your pc so i have faith that you have a pretty good grasp on what you are doing. If time is a factor and you just need a distro that "works" stick with what you have, and find FOSS alternatives for zorin. Best of luck
As far as I know Zorin is FOSS, for what it's worth. It's mostly just bundled FOSS software with some slick themes and accessibility features, plus a few in-house system apps which they do seem to provide sources for.
They mention that it's open source on their website but they don't mention FOSS probably because the libre/gratis distinction is confusing for people.
Zorin itself is foss but paying for features like themeing and software Is imo against the spirit of linux, they should, (again imo) release zorin pro as the default and simply accept donations. Like most distro maintainers. Even more frustrating, is the advertised features are just normal features and software readily available for free on other distros being paywalled. Its very likely that a user could get all of the listed features on the free version without paying. I also misread the website, ms office and adobe premier are not even what is included. In fact they do not list the specific names of the alternatives that they use in the pro version. I would bet that the pro version Has all foss software that is being hidden behind the price tag. I will do more quick research and edit this comment if that is the case.

I installed the paid version of Zorin on my Parents machines, because while I could set it up for them just the same and then maintain it until they die, I'd rather pay 50$ and have nearly 0 work to do.
I make way over 50$ for 1 hour or Linux tech support, so there is no world where it would be worth.
But besides that I don't think your attitude is particularely useful for people that would rather shit just work than spend hours on setting it up themselves.
It's kind of creepy, weird, and unusual. However, I can see someone building a distro and creating a bunch of non-OSS themes and basically selling the themes. That's not beyond the pale, although it is (again) questionably moral given that they probably created all of those themes using free software that they didn't pay for. But whatever.. just keep that in mind.
The usual way of commoditizing Linux is to sell service - so you get, like, 4 tickets a month or something where someone is guaranteed to be there to try to fix whatever problem you have within a reasonable amount of time, and you don't have to either rely on the kindness of strangers.
Zorin is mainstream enough that I suspect if they were really violating the GPL, someone would be on their case already. You can't - usually, depending on the license - just repackage OSS and sell it. So if that's how you wanted to spend your money, you do you and don't worry about the comments on this thread.
Oh, about your question: according to the upgrade page, the "upgrade" is just access to more packages, probably in another repos. You won't have to re-install the distribution, and there won't be any impact on your dual boot. You're just getting more packages to install.

I'm pretty sure you can. GNU's Selling Free Software is for the GPL & doesn't specifically address selling someone else's OSS. But you should (I think?) be able to, so long as you don't violate the license. There are multiple views to selling foss, but I don't think that many will object, if you for example sell Linux DVDs at a low cost. (Not common any more, but this has been done before, I've heard)
I don't know much about Zorin, but selling foss is not inherently evil & illegal.
The whole thing about selling DVDs was that you were selling the DVD, not the distribution on it. You were "charging a reasonable price for the service of burning the DVD, for the media, and for distribution." Much of that went away with the internet, when people could download and burn ISOs themselves. It used to be quite common; not just distributions, but CDs full of OSS software. Again, the assumption and expectation was that you weren't selling the software, but the media. There was no such thing as a "Pro" version of Linux. There were commercial distributions, and there was a period when companies were trying to figure out ways to commoditize OSS, but there were also lawsuits, and it mostly settled out to be service agreements, which were in the end more lucrative anyway.
I disagree about the immorality of selling FOSS. Even in the very rare case that you built the entire program, from scratch, using no FOSS libraries, you probably still used gcc, or the Python interpreter, or go or rustc. And on most cases, you are using libraries that other people created and gave away for free. And instead of giving back to the community, so that the people who's software you're implicitly selling that your software is built and depends on, can't use it similarly for free. And odds are also good that, despite your shim is utterly reliant on their hard work, you're not splitting up the profit and sharing it with them. How much money do those people send to Linus Torvalds? Or the countless kernel contributors? To the people who've worked on libc?
I have absolutely no issue with people who request donations for the software that they built and regularly and consistently maintain. And people charging for OSX or Windows software? It costs more than just free time to develop and release on those platforms - the entire chain is commercial. But when your product is an unmeasurably tiny fraction of all of the gratis effort that went into the end product, well. It doesn't seem right to profit on other's work, does it?
Look, we're a capitalist society. It takes someone time and material to make a chair from scratch, and when you take it, they don't have it any more. They used nothing free except maybe YouTube videos, or their parent's training. The FOSS software ecosystem is the closest thing we have to a functioning communism in the world; it works because, while it may take my time to create something, it doesn't cost me more than my time, and once it's done it can be endlessly replicated and used by innumerable people at no significant cost to me. When actors take advantage of the free ecosystem and don't contribute back in like fashion, in my book that's unethical.
Stallman's usual take is "Yeah sure you can sell it, as long as you respect the 4 freedoms.". So I don't think selling Free Software is against the spirit of FOSS. The issue is rather that the Free Software is against the spirit of selling because realistically you can sell it to one entity which can then just make 7 billion copies of said software. At that point it's no longer financially viable to sell it for you.
I also think that the majority of people creating Free Software would be fine with someone else selling it. Remember how much permissive-licensed software is out there. If authors really cared, they would have licensed the software under GPL, but instead they even allow it to be used with commercial licensing. Obviously I'm not taking away your opinion, but I don't think your opinion represents the majority of FOSS.
Personally, I dislike Zorin, but I can see your point. I didn't know it was Zorin at the time I I just find paywalling some FOSS stuff that isn't entirely yours very weird, and I also don't think users should touch almost anything Ubuntu-based, especially new ones. Mint might be the exception, but it's not to my tastes as well personally.
I think I agree with my university's Linux Users Group recommendation of Fedora, though I personally use Debian.
Honestly, if Debian would tidy up their website, make the Calamares-based installers the default, and perhaps had an installer with backports kernel built-in, it could be the easiest distro out there - I think everything else in Debian is almost perfect for most people. They don't even have to compromise on all that "universal operating system" stuff - they could just offer multiple installers. As for the website, I can get why they need to use a static site with HTML4, but that shouldn't stop them from designing a simple-to-use website.

They're not really paywalling FOSS, though. You can absolutely install it all and configure it yourself. You're paying for them to do the work so you don't have to.

To answer your question--Windows is destructive to *nix boot sectors. When you update Windows, it will bork your *nix install. Dual booting with Windows is a real PITA.

The audacity of Berlin Interior Dept. to force a deportation of a trans student back into the US, given the currently political climate there. That's really bad. Even worse that there aren't even any convictions, or even charges (for this subcase).

@levampyre In school, for a while the faculty couldn't seem to decide whether I was gifted or [slur redacted], so tried to treat me as both at once. Ultimately they seemed to decide that my social difficulties counted for more than my academic success, though, *especially* because i was a girl, and girls were supposed to be super-social, not social [slur redacted]s!
@levampyre I think my defence has been to not care about what other people think of me. Because I am odd, in ways which, some of the time, I cannot hide. And I don't care, I'm comfortable with me as I am, so what business is it of anyone else's?

A while back I meme-ified a mid-2010s study (so, at a time when autism diagnoses were even more heavily male-dominated) and it highlighted just *how general and pervasive* disliking autistic people at very first sight was.
It was even worse in the 1970s/1980s when I was a kid/teen, and I can only imagine how bad it must have been for Black/female/less financially comfortable autistic kids at a similar time.

The 'diagnosis' becomes weirder and weirder the more you realize family cultural/ideological traits, such as anti-patriarchy, openness to LGBTQ gender and sexuality, and even anti capitalism can manifest in very young children in a way that sets them apart, clashes them against other family cultures.

The fact that it requires a **functioning theory of mind** to grasp that someone is not just choosing to be "difficult" is just icing on the irony cake.

Her story resonate so much with my experience. The bullying as a child, the trying to fit in, the "it is good to be different, but not like that". Basically, I was failing to understand the rules of the game, because I did it from an assumption that the rules had some fairness built into them.

I'm not autistic but I've been deaf and disabled since birth.
I remember all the boys in infant school refusing to talk to me cos crip cooties (they'd play with my female friends sometimes). I was lucky to have one pre-school friend who while shy had been bought up Quaker and had a blind Dad. She refused to be friends with anyone who wouldn't talk to me which got me a small social group.
We can teach children not to reject difference & not copy adult prejudices.
sometimes my autistic friends assume I'm also autistic cos of similarities we share and that many of my friends are ND.
Deafness social impact, probable trauma from childhood bullying and me learning not to give a crap probably give me many apparent autistic codings. But I don't share the inner lived experience, and some of my social awareness is above average. I've often become an NT and ND translator for friends and within communities.

My bullies called me “bit-brain” and the F-slur in the 80’s. I guess they somehow knew I’d grow up to be a trans software developer. Ugh at least I can mostly laugh about it now that I’m long gone and they don’t know my name.

I needed therapy to recognize the abuse by my dad, because there was so much good with the bad. I am 100% sure that he loved me. He just didn't know better 😕
@DL1JPH @levampyre @violetmadder For me it's this inner voice that mirrors the pressure that was put on me as a kid, telling me I have so much potential and mustn't let it go to waste. I don't care what my parents think of me anymore, but that unfortunate mental habit they trained in me lives on. I have to remind myself that my life has meaning even if I don't accomplish great things. Most people never get to accomplish great things at all, so why should I hold myself to that ridiculous standard? And yet it keeps coming back to nag me, making me feel like a failure for not having done the big things I set out to do when I was young. Can't it just be enough to be a good dad, a good husband, a good person? Why did they have to set the bar at "accomplished genius"? That's not fair to anyone.
@levampyre To be clear, I hold myself to some very high standards as well; however, I know those standards are my own and achievable - and I rarely struggle to meet them, unless I'm in dire need of rest. The one big change I've made is to recognize the early warning signs and heed them. The contingency planning that comes with that I can handle. @DL1JPH I think it is mainly my own high standards, although, definitely not 100%. I am fairly aware of social norms and deliberately defy many of them by choice. However, in the end I'm still a human being raised and socialized in THIS society and some norms even make sense, e.g. society expects me to be a good mother, but I also WANT to be a good mother. I do not necessarily agree with the notion that motherhood is supposed to fulfill me 100%. That's just 1 example.
@DL1JPH I stopped having issues with being the odd one out when I was about 16. Like Laury, I didn't die my hair red, but I put a frame around that crack in the wall. I was an out and proud queer and didn't care what others thought of me.
However, I care a lot about what I think of myself. I hold myself to a very high standard and I'm afraid I might not have the spoons to live up to my own standards now anymore. It feels like a loss, like a defeat.

@levampyre @DL1JPH @violetmadder I think the real trick is to realize that you aren't broken to begin with, instead of ceaselessly trying to "fix" something that doesn't need fixing, and then being upset that you've failed.
NTs set the terms of this game, not us. They designed it for them to win, not us. Maybe it wasn't nefarious. Maybe they just did it because it worked for them. But it doesn't work for us. Regardless, the game is rigged in their favor. Why should we hate ourselves for not playing it as well as them?

He said things so cruel that I lost it and started repeating "f*ck you" at increasing volume before hanging up, and then I just wordlessly screamed until I lost my voice and thought my throat was going to bleed. He sad things I can't repeat even now, years later, because they hurt so much. And what triggered this cruelty from him? I told him I was feeling suicidal. A year later, after having blocked his calls, I asked for an apology. His "apology" consisted of what amounted to, "I'm sorry because you're twisting my arm... but it's actually your fault" in not so many words. I ran into him at an event much later, and he broke into tears with his chin quivering when he said hi to me. I almost felt bad enough to say hi back, despite what he said to me and his utter lack of remorse when I asked for an apology.
Could you help me understand the connection you see there? To me, society making a difference into a problem for the different is a failure of society, not an issue with an individual. I don't see myself as disabled. I see them as the ones with the problem, however much I end up having to deal with it.

But if you prefer absolute precision then the Bridges Translation is the most accurate and the M.A.S. Abdel Haleem translation is plainly written in Oxford English. You can find 2 of these translations along with recitation in Arabic in quran.com website, and then islamicbookstore.com has physical copies of them as well as how to books on prayers and studies, and also rugs and beads for dhikr (A stimmy way to meditate). But you can also count meditation on your fingers. I do both, but I use the beads during night prayers to count the number of repeated rakah (prayer segments) since I would lose count on my fingers. Or if I need to do a particular holiday dhikr with 99 repetitions, then yeah, tasbih beads. I always feel really relaxed and refreshed after it though. It is stimmy.

Masking my autism is not something I do anymore. I just consider "neurotypical" to be a language, like how I taught myself several languages. When I go to a Japanese restaurant, I speak Japanese to them. When I'm at the masjid, I speak Arabic. When I have to be around neurotypical people, I speak their language like I'm a foreigner at the DMV. Badly, but I try to be understood. Anyway, if you view nt people as a different culture with their own language and norms, you don't have to mask. Just communicate directly and to the point like you are ordering tacos. And if they are speaking in a way you don't understand, then tell them you don't understand and to be more direct. As to comfortable clothes... stims, sitting on the floor, my religion handles that. So I don't need to hide my autism, I just appear to outside observation as a particularly devout person (I wish I was better at it, but everyone has faults.) But autism "symptoms" are praised in my religion as virtues, so I have decent self esteem and have a community around me who appreciate my presence rather than wanting me to go away. So why hide virtues? 🤔
Not likely to feel deprived either, we have halal options for things like bacon and marshmallows that are made with beef instead of pork, and they actually taste better. Anything that is forbidden to us is for our benefit, and the food rules keep us healthy. The clothing rules keep us having a positive self image and being comfortable. Some people opt for more modest clothes than others. I have heard from sisters their reasons for choosing niqab or burqa, and it is always something to do with boosting their confidence or feeling less stressed out about something they think os a flaw in their appearance. Like a saftey blanket for their self esteem. And I feel the same about thobes and kaftans as a man. I worry less about how I look when I wear longer clothes. Praying salah improves our stress levels and help our mental health. And so on. The reason to do practices is always because of making Allah (swt) happy with us, but the side benefits are known as "fruits" of practice. These usually improve physical or mental health, or quality of life. You can try Sunnah practices without converting if you want to see if I am telling the truth first. For example, try halal food or do wudu when you wake up. Try sleeping laying on your right side with your head cupped in your right hand. (Prevents your liver from sitting on top of your heart as happens when you sleep on the left, you get better sleep, also prevents a relaxed jaw from causing snoring as happens if you sleep on your back. Prevents nightmares and restless sleep, snoring, and stressing the heart or having a low oxygen situation.)
