I find that the fediverse as a whole is just like any other socializing platform. No different, just a different coat of paint and a neat little mechanic in how it operates. But, still the same old shit.
No, this is not the same old shit, because while yes of course humans are still humans and will do shitty human things the difference is that there is no easy way to enclose the Fediverse and force an opinion, censor people speaking out against injustice. or hold the entire network hostage to push a profit for investors.
The Fediverse is still definitely vulnerable to those things, and who knows if longterm whether a large corporation or constellation of authoritarian regimes can critically undermine the Fediverse (we will certainly see attempts at some point), but no matter what happens, anybody can still spin up their own instance of Mastodon, Lemmy or any other fediverse software and start creating a new community.
From the perspective of an authoritarian ruling class, the problem of quelling dissent in the masses has gone from buying the one or two tv conglomerate networks that provide news for 100s of millions of people, buying Twitter and sabotaging it, or buying Reddit and paying someone to manipulate it with bots and ban people saying things they don't like, to a Sisyphean hell of having to keep stamping out Fediverse communities wherever they pop up, in whatever country or legal context they happen to pop up all over the globe.
If you think that the Fediverse taking off and reaching a critical mass where lots of people use it daily for normal social media stuff isn't a strategic failure for the dictators and ruthless capitalists willing to create mass murder if it nets them a profit, I don't know what to tell you...

As someone who uses GIMP very effectively for commercial work, I am increasingly feeling like people who say that GIMP isn't a capable alternative are simply ignorant of it's capabilities. Yeah, it doesn't work like Photoshop. Yeah, it doesn't work like Affinity Photo. Yeah, it doesn't work like Photopea.
But yeah, it does work, and works well. If you apply a bit of patience to learn how it works, then it's also very easy to use, eventually. Maybe it doesn't cover all the use-cases, but it's ignorant to say that it categorically isn't capable for commercial use.
I have never used any of those other softwares in more than a decade.
I still only use GIMP for image editing out of principle.
Still have to check every time for GIMP shortcuts because they are so counter intuitive. And there are so many counter intuitive things about it.
IMHO it have the same issue that Libreoffice. It was really made decades ago and never really updated. It's like that meme about workflows. In their efforts not to break workflows they have gotten behind in UX compared to other software.
Also development seems to be stopping to a halt with each release compared to other more modern foss projects. I suppose it's due an ancient codebase that's probably really hard to work with.
I use it. It can do a lot. But UX and development speed in GIMP is not up to par with projects like Krita, Inkscape or Blender (to name a few).
For a free app, you need to support it, to have it being worked on. A lot of people just say "yeah, it's free!" and they don't support it. I find that supporting free apps is a good investment. I give some, to NOT have to pay a lot to greedy companies who want me to sign up and pay monthly to use their apps.
I economically support other foss projects. Not just gimp really, as I have not probe whatsoever, but I have this feeling that there's some development issues with it.
Godot is one of the ones I think is going to grow bigger than commercial alternatives (like Blender) for instance.
Lately every big GIMP update would be a minor version bump in other projects. Gimp 1 to Gimp 2 was some of a big upgrade. 2 to 3 not so much. Great software. But some of the things introduced in 3.0 are just fixes and patches to try to merge some of the decisions made 20 years ago with the current expectations on UX.
i have found gimp very intuitive over the years, but inkscape has left me totally be befuddled which is a shame because ad*be illustrator was my first digital design love

Otto Kuusinen: As long as the working class wages only an economic struggle, the bourgeoisie does not see in that any great danger for itself; but when the working class organises politically, i.e., creates a political party which expresses its will as a class, the bourgeoisie begins seriously to fear for its rule.
