I personally like mint and pop!os for new users, but for this user I want to try something windows like with more sex appeal. I don't want to have to touch this computer again. Proprietary software is not an issue/consideration. User is techier than most. What has your experience been with kbuntu? Pros/cons? Other suggestions?

I'm personally a fan of Debian. Default KDE isn't bad looking from what I can remember (I personally don't use it - I neither hate or love it just because I love XFCE). I'm personally a big XFCE fan, but you do have to do some work to get it working good, and there are still jank parts here and there.
While no distro is completely set and forget, I think Debian Stable is as close as you can get. Once you install it and get it working the way you want (depending on your setup, you might encounter minor issues as with any distro), it will pretty much stay that way until you upgrade to the next version, and you can go up to 5 years before upgrading.
I would recommend you use the KDE (or whatever DE you want) live installer, though, as the default installer is quite unintuitive. You can find it in the list of installers at debian.org/distrib/.
I've never used Kubuntu specifically, but I would personally avoid Ubuntu these days if just because of Snaps. Also, Ubuntu is heavily bloated - base Ubuntu is almost unusable in a VM now, while vanilla GNOME and PopOS run well in VMs on the same machine. Personally, when I need to test Ubuntu builds, I always prefer working with PopOS.
Overall, I'd say if you don't end up using Debian (I don't blame you - while I like it, you might not), just please don't use anything Ubuntu-based that isn't Mint or PopOS.
I used to recommend Ubuntu. Now that immutable distributions exist, I prefer to recommend openSUSE Aeon or Fedora Silverblue to new users. However, check this website before installing Linux.
I think you underestimate how many computers that are in use today that can’t be updated to Windows 11.
I, and many others, have run Windows 10 on unsupported hardware. Difference is that Windows 10 didn’t care and Windows 11 actively try to stop you from doing so. So, what is this if not Microsoft now forcing people to buy new hardware, if they have unsupported hardware?

Favorite thing lately is finding an article I wish were in podcast form, saving the text to a .txt file, then having TTS Util use RH Voice to convert the file into an audio reading, and listen to my own little robotic FOSS nanny read me the stories I want to hear in my headphones as I do yardwork.
Actually what is missing are more voices, impersonators of texts, texts, contributors as well as even some hint's about how to transform text's into other voices, always on linux or software that run's on linux of course.

the peertube initial material sum up is to slow and should be seen at least at speed 1.5. Also It actually could need a remake cutting it down to a 5 minute short attention span tictoc version by anyone who'd like to help out and btw add to the @studi0 proposal of cooperating in content creation and working out on how to do that.
The final language of the sum up has to be spanisch and in any case a dubbing into Brazilian language too, as those represent the main public to address and an important audience for the entire project to catch.

Por desconocimiento, o por su escaso carisma, los hongos pasan desapercibidos en la vida de la mayor parte de los seres humanos. Sin embargo, comemos pan, tomamos cerveza, sidra o vino, que existen en virtud de las levaduras que por supuesto, son hongos. Con los años y la formación científica, me he ido maravillando con la infinidad de cosas que son capaces de hacer los hongos. No sé si es específicamente eso lo que me asombra, o es el penoso desconocimiento que hay acerca de ellos en la población en general. Acaso sea más peligroso esto último que nos lleva al peor enemigo posible: la ignorancia. En el hemisferio sur abundan las coníferas. Son grandes, verdes, primitivas y hermosas. En Uruguay abundan los pinos (Pinus spp.) y ellos han colonizado infinidad de ecosistemas costeros desplazando al relicto a nuestro autóctono y petiso monte psamófilo. Es difícil encontrar un lugar arenoso tanto en las costas del Río de la Plata como en la costa atlántica del Uruguay donde no hayan pinos. Los pinos crecen muy bien en esta región, y ello es fruto de una poderosa interacción de sus raíces con el más variopinto plantel de hongos imaginables. Esta asociación, que produce beneficios para ambos miembros de la sociedad, se conoce en biología como simbiosis. Cuando comienzan las lluvias de otoño y los montes de pinos se tornan húmedos y las temperaturas aún son moderadas, los hongos se ven invadidos de un frenesí reproductivo y comienzan a formar estructuras sexuales. Algunos hongos producen los conocidos sombreros o setas, que portan las esporas que aseguran la dispersión y perpetuación de la especie. Muchos de estos sombreritos son de gran belleza para el observador atento, y también pueden representar pequeños tesoros en función de sus posibles utilidades en el hogar. La recolección de hongos debe hacerse con cuidado y con asesoramiento de personas que conozcan perfectamente lo que se colecta. Algunas de estas especies pueden ser muy tóxicas, por lo que no debe tomarse a la ligera su utilización, especialmente en la alimentación. Uno de los grandes amigos de los pinos es el comúnmente llamado hongo de panal. Su nombre se debe a que en la parte inferior del sombrero, sus esporas están contenidas en pequeños tubos apretados que le dan aspecto de panal. Hay una especie particularmente interesante desde el punto de vista gastronómico de estos hongos de panal, Suillus luteus (o Boletus luteus) es su nombre científico.
Menospreciado por desconocer sus excelentes cualidades aromáticas al secarse, este hongo de panal ha convivido discretamente con los uruguayos desde hace mucho. Los que conocían su potencial gastronómico eran los inmigrantes italianos que llegaron a fines del siglo XIX o a principios del XX escapando de la guerra a lugares menos agitados. Algunos de sus descendientes todavía esperan con la paciencia del sabio y los cosechan ávidamente cuando aparecen en la superficie. Son hongos limpios, es decir, muchas veces crecen sobre el césped en los alrededores de los pinos y, por lo tanto, no exigen lavados exhaustivos para retirar la arena como ocurre con más conocido en Uruguay como hongo rosado o delicioso (Lactarius deliciosus). Su nombre genérico Suillus refiere a su aroma fresco que es buscado por los cerdos (suinos), aroma que recuerda a aquel de la manteca fresca, y que se exacerba luego de un ligero hervor. Aún hoy los micológicos italianos llaman a este hongo funghi porcini. Son hongos con gran contenido de agua, por lo que debe evitarse sumergirlos para su lavado y, de hecho, es preferible evitar por completo su lavado para evitar que queden excesivamente acuosos. Para su consumo, tanto secos como frescos, debe removerse la cutícula gelatinosa que recubre el sombrero; actividad que requiere de paciencia pero que es esencial ya que la cutícula resulta además de desagradable, indigesta. Un excelente medio de conservación es su deshidratación, lo que además resulta práctico para su almacenamiento por el reducido espacio que se requiere para una gran cantidad de hongos una vez secos. Este sencillo método que consiste en colocarlos con el pie hacia arriba sobre una rejilla – cubiertos con un tul o una malla para evitar los insectos – y colocarlos al sol durante aproximadamente una semana, cuidando de ponerlos a resguardo de la humedad de las noches de otoño y volviéndolos a sacar al día siguiente, representa además una forma de potenciar su sabor. Probablemente durante el secado ocurra algún tipo de fermentación parcial, que permite obtener y concentrar un perfume imprescindible a la hora de preparar arroces aromáticos, salsas, e innumerables otros platos.

Por el momento sin tema ninguno, sin embargo con la idea de ir agregándole contenido, así que, si te parece bien usaremos estos textos tuyos con enlaces hacia aquí, o mejor, te damos acceso y lo aprovechas como mas te place. De hecho siempre esta la opción de hacer una copia completa del y pasártelo así como viene. Probablemente borrando a lo que no corresponde pasar, pero en si la idea y la oferta esta es es bien simple. Los sitios phpBB se pueden cambiar bastante fácil de dominio y son de código abierto. De hecho undernet monto uno recientemente. El de tupambae.com es un sitio cerrado, no solo que los foros han muerto, abierto se llenan de SPAM y si realmente ay gente que quieren participar con invitación por mail alcanza y sobra. Y actualizaciones a versiones mas nuevas tampoco tiene mucho sentido. Así como esta funciona, el diseño aun copa y ta. Tiene todo lo que hace falta, incluyendo robots.txt que manada a los crawler a donde corresponde, el internet de hoy ya no es lo que era. Por decirlo de alguna manera.

Sin embargo, si lo miras desde el tema inicial se transfoma en un eterno hilo poco comprensible y de poco encanto.

Con la introducción de las especies del género Eucalyptus al Uruguay, llegaron otros seres que seguramente vinieron como pasajeros en el mismo barco, los hongos de los eucaliptos Gymnopilus spectabilis (antes descriptos como Pholiota spectabilis). Esta introducción, que debe haber sido involuntaria, ha tenido consecuencias insospechadas en el territorio uruguayo. En primer lugar debe destacarse el enorme valor utilitario de este hongo, que se ha especializado en degradar los restos de troncos de los cada vez más ubicuos eucaliptos. Pero más allá de su descacable posición en una red trófica degradando productos que de otra forma resultarían enormemente recalcitrantes, el hongo de eucalipto posee un valor extra en la dieta de los uruguayos. Contrariamente a lo que ha ocurrido en la mayoría de los países donde infinidad de autores han escrito en desmedro de estos hongos, en el Uruguay, ha permeado en la mayoría de los hogares y, con escasísimas excepciones en los locales callejeros de comidas rápidas o carritos. Al referirnos a hongo de eucalipto, en realidad nos referimos a sus estructuras sexuales, o cuerpos fructíferos (basidiocarpos) – los sombreros o setas, como gustan llamarlos los europeos. El hongo en sí (su cuerpo vegetativo) es esa maraña de pelillos delgados que habita sin pena ni gloria la mayor parte del año alimentándose de los deshechos de los eucaliptos sin siquiera ser percibido por los humanos. Estos cuerpos fructíferos aparecen en grupos, y maduran de forma escalonada. De modo que el grupo de hongos tiene algunos muy grandes y otros muy pequeños, como si se tratara de una pequeña familia.
Las escuetas referencias bibliográficas a su utilización en alimentación se deben principalmente a que para ser consumidos requieren un procesamiento previo, simple pero fundamental. Si los hongos no se hierven previamente, no son aptos para el consumo humano. Tan sencillo como eso. Naturalmente estos hongos son duros y amargos. No contentos con eso, es un hecho bastante difundido que producen sustancias alucinógenas y tóxicas. Es por eso que en casi todas partes del mundo están catalogados como tóxicos. Personalmente, no he visto jamás un testimonio de nadie que los haya utilizado como droga de uso recreativo; probablemente porque son tan duros y tan amargos y picantes en estado fresco, y dejan una sensación tan desagradable en el paladar que hasta el psicodélico más entusiasta los prefiere en un choripán.

En Uruguay hay una industria de los hongos en conserva, pero más del 99% de los hongos que se preparan para su comercialización son hongos de eucalipto. Para ello se los procesa en vinagre y agua con sal. Así, se los conoce como hongos en vinagre, y son utilizados como acompañamiento en hamburguesas, salchichas (o panchos como los llamamos en el Río de la Plata), o chorizos (especialmente al pan). Es muy común encontrar hongos de eucalipto frescos para su venta en las verdulerías de Montevideo en otoño. Desconozco cuántos kilos se comercializan de estos hongos en vinagre al año, pero por ser omnipresentes en los locales de este tipo de comidas y en los supermercados imagino que su volumen de venta anual ¡debe aproximarse al de las aceitunas! Tal es el apetito fúngico de los uruguayos. Lamentablemente puede constatarse la profunda ignorancia de los proveedores industriales cuando al observar algunos de los envases del mercado que contienen hongos de eucalipto (Gymnopilus spectabilis), el consumidor encuentra que luce en las etiquetas “hongos (Lactarius deliciosus), vinagre, agua y sal”. Este es un ejemplo no sólo de una aberración taxonómica, sino un reflejo de un desconocimiento supino de la entidad biológica involucrada. Llamo la atención sobre esto, porque resulta evidente la falta de asesoramiento por profesionales adecuados, así como la ridiculez de los contralores bromatológicos, llevados a cabo por quién sabe qué clase de funcionarios que adjudican una habilitación para la comercialización de un producto de consumo humano por parte de empresas que claramente carecen de asesores debidamente formados.
Hay quienes hierven los hongos de eucalipto hasta que quedan tiernos, y ese proceso puede llevar un rato. Otros, más puristas de su sabor, indican que la detoxificación debe realizarse con sucesivos cambios de agua – como se hace con las aceitunas. Este último procedimiento es el que me ha resultado más placentero al paladar porque respeta el sutil sabor, y el hermoso color amarillo de estos pequeños habitantes de los montes de eucaliptos. Lo que dicta mi experiencia personal, y he insistido en probar muchas variantes es que tanto si uno los colecta o los compra debe preferir aquellos más pequeños ya que resultan más tiernos. Los más grandes los utiliza la industria y funcionan bien como condimento, pero si uno desea saborearlos con algún detalle personalizado y respetando su color, aroma y sabores naturales, es preferible hacer esta selección, que permite evitar una intensa etapa de hervor. Otro punto radica en la utilización excesiva de vinagre, que por supuesto asegura la conservación, pero sacrifica los pequeños sabores en beneficio del penetrante y desagradable olor del ácido acético. Cada receta que he encontrado que refiere a un escabeche utiliza al menos partes iguales de aceite y vinagre, cosa que me resulta sensorialmente inaceptable. Mi recomendación es utilizar como máximo una medida de vinagre por cada dos de aceite. La receta que se presenta aquí es una variación de una disponible en el ciberespacio bajo el título de hongos adobados, y que se atribuye a algún instituto de enseñanza de la gastronomía.
Hongos de eucalipto en escabeche
1 kg de hongos de eucalipto 1 taza de vinagre 1 taza de agua 1/2 cucharada de sal gruesa Pimienta recién molida (para evitar la desagradable sorpresa de morder un grano de pimienta) 5 dientes de ajo pelados (sin picar) 1 morrón (preferentemente rojo) picado en cubitos o en tirillas, a gusto del usuario Aceite de girasol (o de maíz, lo importante es que sea de sabor neutro) 1 taza de aceite de oliva 5 Hojas frescas de laurel Albahaca seca
Poner los hongos en agua durante varias horas (4-5) cambiándoles el agua varias veces (cada 30 minutos da buen resultado). Escurrirlos y colocarlos en agua limpia y darles un hervor de 1 minuto. Volver a escurrirlos bien con un colador. Si elegimos hongos pequeños sólo deberemos cortarlos por la mitad, o a lo sumo en 3 partes. Los más pequeños no necesitan ser cortados y resulta muy agradable a la vista verlos enteros. Cocinarlos tapados en el vinagre, agua y sal durante cinco minutos, y escurrir bien. Colocarlos en el aceite de girasol con los dientes de ajo, el laurel, la pimienta, la albahaca y el morrón. Calentar brevemente para unificar sabores y mezclar. Retirar del fuego, y agregar el aceite de oliva. Envasar en frascos esterilizados, tapar a media rosca y colocar en agua hirviendo, en olla tapada durante 20 minutos. Tapar completamente y almacenar.

Effectivement l'informatique s'est construite sous forme d'architecture en « pile », intéressante du point de vue conceptuel et modulaire, mais gourmande en ressources, difficile à optimiser, sans compter les problèmes de dépendance logicielle et de sécurité de la chaîne logistique.
Dans le contexte de l'effondrement, il faudrait s'assurer d'avoir encore les moyens matériels, humains, et les ressources (réseau électrique), de faire tourner des ordinateurs... C'est pas gagné. En tout cas un peu de doc papier pourrait être utile !

Not sure what is the actual state of the art of the installer is. Last I "heard" and experienced is that it was broken and that the best way to install is thru the console commands detailed in the helpers page: /help/Install#Option+B%3A+Run+the+automatic+install+script
Marcos Is Delusional In Plan To Declare The Philippines Insurgency-Free: NPA
Marcos is delusional when he and his fascist cohorts bragged their intention to declare the Philippines “insurgency-free” this year, peddling the fantasy that they will soon completely annihilate the New People’s Army and put an end to the Filipino people’s armed resistance.
Marcos and his officials in the NTF-ELCAC and National Security Council are fooling only themselves with their pronouncements in their so-called National Action Plan for Unity, Peace and Development, that the NPA has no more guerrilla front in any part of the country, except for one “weakened” in Bicol. These false claims are readily debunked by their own actions, as they continue to deploy scores of combat battalions against units of the NPA nationwide.
They talk of “peace and development” but bring only tyranny and destruction. There is no peace when armed soldiers lord over the civilian population in the guise of “community support.” There can be no peace when drunken soldiers recklessly fire their weapons during their nightly binges. It is a mockery of peace when soldiers murder civilians with impunity and fabricate stories that they were killed in armed encounter with the NPA that never happened.
They talk of peace but continue to imprison on false charges the peace consultants of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) and more than 800 other political prisoners. They talk of peace but only want the NPA to surrender its weapons and give up the people’s cause. What peace are they talking about when all they want is for the people to give up all they have to defend themselves with from the violent onslaught of the brutal state machinery? This is the fascist interpretation of peace, the peace of the graveyard, not the just and lasting peace that the Filipino people aspire for.
How can there be peace when they continue to refuse to acknowledge and address the problem of landlessness that lie at the root of the armed conflict? Contrary to the claims of the NTF-ELCAC, a few road and infrastructure projects will not bring development to peasant communities. They build roads without traffic, clinics without doctors, and schools without teachers, only to line up the pockets of military officers and contractors with kickbacks and bribes.
How can there be peace when the Marcos regime continues to follow the US counterinsurgency doctrine to suppress the Filipino people’s armed resistance, and use US-supplied bombs and weapons against the Filipino people. How can there be peace when Marcos allows the US military to build up its forces in the Philippines, position its missiles, stockpile its weapons, use the Philippines for conducting non-stop war exercises and as springboard for saber-rattling in South China Sea, and drag the country into war preparations and provocations against its imperialist rival China?
Marcos’ claims of development are all empty talk when landless tenants are made to surrender half their produce to the land owner in the form of rent, when farm-workers are paid measly wages enough only to feed their children with instant noodles, or when poor peasants do not have land to work on, and where the military overlords tell people they cannot expand their production, accusing them of contributing their produce to the NPA.
What development is the NTF-ELCAC talking about when the government itself acknowledged that over the past year, 1.1 million people lost their jobs, including more than 610,000 displaced in agriculture. In the countryside, these are the peasants being driven away by Marcos from their land to allow the entry of mining companies, plantations, energy and so-called eco-tourism projects. These are the palay farmers who are going bankrupt in the face of the deluge of imported rice ordered by Marcos. These too are the onion, garlic and vegetable farmers who are losing money in the face of unfair competition with commodities being imported by smugglers and big business cartels, in collusion with Marcos and his lieutenants.
Marcos is an expert at massaging and cherry-picking data and publicity gimmicks to conceal the failure of his regime to address the needs of the people. However, despite all their efforts to weave an illusion of development, Marcos and NTF-ELCAC could not hide the ever worsening conditions of the people in the face of widespread joblessness, economic dispossession, low wages and salaries, high prices, and lack of social services, while government and military officers wallow in bureaucratic corruption. Not even the NTF-ELCAC’s retinue of apologists, the traitors calling themselves “former rebels,” could hide these gross realities.
Through the NAP-UPD and the accompanying Memorandum Circular No. 83, Marcos scapegoats the mass organizations of workers and peasants, students associations, even electoral parties and pro-poor service agencies, for failure to end the revolutionary armed resistance of the people through its all-out war. The NAP-UPD’s reveals Marcos’ plan to further intensify political repression to silence all dissent and critics. Over the past year, officers and members of these groups have faced intense political and legal persecution, with the NTF-ELCAC, the AFP and police leveraging the Anti-Terrorism Law and Anti-Terrorist Financing Law against them.
By clamping down on these organizations who seek redress within the bounds of the reactionary constitution, and restrict the legal avenue of struggle, the Marcos regime, in fact, is inciting people to take the path of armed struggle and join or support the New People’s Army.
While the NPA has suffered losses stemming from both its internal weaknesses and the relentless US-supported war of terror waged by the Marcos regime, it is far from being defeated. The US-Marcos regime and its fascist agents are absolutely wrong to think that it can crush the NPA with their superior military force and relentless suppression of the people. Even now, the NPA is making steady headway in countering the enemy’s all-out war by overcoming its internal problems, returning to the basic principles of waging protracted people’s war, tirelessly conducting mass work, counter-encircling the enemy, and making it punch in the air.
The NPA continues to enjoy the deep and wide support of the masses. The peasant masses, from among whom came the majority of the NPA’s Red fighters, are undeterred and determined to persevere in taking part in the armed resistance to fight for their rights and interests, especially in the face of Marcos regime’s state terrorist attacks against their communities.
The Red fighters and commanders of the NPA have no intention of being defeated. Inspired and guided by the rectification movement, and by the memory of all their fallen heroes and martyrs, they are determined as ever to frustrate the all-out fascist war being waged by Marcos and his fascist minions. Under the absolute leadership of the Party, the NPA will continue to wage widespread and intensive guerrilla warfare and employ the tactics of concentration, dispersal and shifting and quick movement, with the aim of recovering, reactivating and rebuilding the mass base which the enemy so desperately wants to disorganize and destroy.
The NPA, along with all the Party’s revolutionary forces, must exert extra effort to work hand in hand with the peasant masses in the guerrilla zones and surrounding areas, to carry forward their antifeudal and antifascist mass struggles. Based on their capabilities, NPA units will continue to carry out tactical offensives to shatter the reign of terror, punish the fascist criminals and inspire the people to fight with all their strength.
The crisis of the semi-colonial and semi-feudal system, being exacerbated by the Marcos regime with his complete subservience to its imperialist masters, continue to generate conditions favorable for waging the armed revolution. The broad masses of the people are being subjected to ever worsening forms of political repression, oppression and exploitation. They have no other choice but to fight back primarily with arms, along with other forms of struggle, against the armed suppression of the Marcos regime.
The Party calls on all revolutionary mass activists, especially among workers and the youth, to join the New People’s Army and serve as Red fighters, and participate in waging agrarian revolution and armed struggle. All revolutionary forces must strengthen their resolve and fight even more militantly and courageously, to carry forward the struggle for national and social liberation.

Sadly ChatGPT has weaponized that against students (and junior workers in many fields), so now instead of learning a neat and useful trick to work less, they can uber-google an approximation of it that may be able to convince their guardians/teachers/managers enough to get them to the next assignment.

Had an event at yesterday's D&D game where two of the 8th graders were complaining about accusations of AI use on their work just because they have broader vocabularies than their peers - not uncommon among gamers who read a lot - and the fear that their have to dumb down their work to avoid getting into trouble. So even the ones who _don't_ want to use it are being effected. We need a better cross-the-board solution.
Granted, my own daughter just flat out loves learning shit, so her using AI was never a concern. That being said, when kids aew being forced into classes that they didn't enjoy and felt weren't going to aid them long term, I can see where the temptation is. I was a corner cutter myself as a kid.

in reply to wuphysics87 • • •I'm personally a fan of Debian. Default KDE isn't bad looking from what I can remember (I personally don't use it - I neither hate or love it just because I love XFCE).
I'm personally a big XFCE fan, but you do have to do some work to get it working good, and there are still jank parts here and there.
While no distro is completely set and forget, I think Debian Stable is as close as you can get. Once you install it and get it working the way you want (depending on your setup, you might encounter minor issues as with any distro), it will pretty much stay that way until you upgrade to the next version, and you can go up to 5 years before upgrading.
I would recommend you use the KDE (or whatever DE you want) live installer, though, as the default installer is quite unintuitive. You can find it in the list of installers at debian.org/distrib/.
I've never used Kubuntu specifically, but I would personally avoid Ubuntu these days if just because of Snaps. Also, Ubuntu is heavily bloated - base Ubuntu is almost unusable in a VM now, while vanilla GNOME and PopOS run well in VMs on the same machine. Personally, when I need to test Ubuntu builds, I always prefer working with PopOS.
Overall, I'd say if you don't end up using Debian (I don't blame you - while I like it, you might not), just please don't use anything Ubuntu-based that isn't Mint or PopOS.

I, and many others, have run Windows 10 on unsupported hardware. Difference is that Windows 10 didn’t care and Windows 11 actively try to stop you from doing so. So, what is this if not Microsoft now forcing people to buy new hardware, if they have unsupported hardware?
