My new normal? Bed around 9pm-10pm. Asleep around 9:15pm - 10:15pm. Awake around 2am. Last night I drank some bed time tea infused with melatonin. Took about 45 minutes for the effects to really kick in. Sleep tracker showed I had about 48% of my sleep was "deep sleep" which is the highest it's been in a long time. But I'm wide awake at 2AM in the morning. Fuck. And if this morning is anything like this past week or so I'll probably go back to sleep around 8-9am this morning where I'll sleep for another 3 hours.

Yeah. I have! And I even attempted to actually do that for a while. I mean, I'm retired now. One would think I have the time to experiment. But I've had some crazy ass insomnia since moving out here to Albuquerque about 18 months ago. Like really crazy insomnia. Some caused by anemia I come to find out (which is now under control) but I used to take 200mg of Benadryl at bed time just to go to sleep (and sleep during the night) but over the past few months even that wasn't working. To make matters worse I had a VERY bad experience with the hospital's sleep treatment facility about 9 months ago where I've probably burned that bridge but this latest thing has come on out of the blue. Stopped taking the benadryl (because I'm concerned about alzheimers I have a family history of my father and brother) only to find I didn't need it I'm going to sleep within about 10 minutes of my head hitting my pillow but now this shit. It's crazy. The sleep doc swears I've got sleep apnea (and I know with 100% certainty and conviction that I don't and I have absolutely NO symptoms of it) so I don't know what the hell to do. Last night I took some melatonin infused tea. I bought some to hopefully help me sleep through the night but still woke up after about 4 hours.
Biphasic sleep is going to bed around 8pm or 9pm, waking up around midnight, staying awake for about 2 hours, then going back to sleep and waking up around 6am.
The past week+ I've been going to bed around 9pm or 10pm. Waking up after 4 hours. Being awake for the next 6-8 hours, then crashing from sheer tiredness around 8-9am for another 3-4 hours. I don't think that's biphasic sleep.
Biphasic sleep also gave us the phrase "the witching hour" because it was that time in the middle of the night where some got up to some no-good (or made some babies).

I hope you manage to figure it out - i had some bouts with sleep issues a long time ago, and took meds for a while, but mine was mostly anxiety driven when I was in college/early career, and it improved on its own as I got older and settled in.
I am wondering if it's not anxiety related because definitely the older I'm getting the more anxiety I'm developing. Didn't used to be claustrophobic and now I'm getting so worse. Used to not be afraid of heights (just falling) and now I can't even get 3 or 4 rungs up a ladder without freaking out. Problem is I have no idea how to get any of that tested or diagnosed.

Truth is I no longer agree with either way, though, I comprehend the underlying premises (also personal experimentation with both). I know without knowing that there is a third way (maybe more?), also via personal experiences. Still oscillate between the two at times π π
I disagree with the interpretation of suffering being a 'distancing' from 'the path'. It's simply a fact of living in the conditional, therefore an integral part of any path, whatever that may be.
