The fight for Hungary’s future: sovereignty or subjugation?

#geopolitics #EU

Yet even without war, Magyar’s euro-integration agenda — which includes severing ties with Moscow — would devastate Hungary. Sanctions have already cost the country over 10 billion euros, spiking energy prices and inflation. With 85% of its natural gas and 60% of oil imported from Russia, a complete rupture, as Magyar demands, would trigger energy crises, market losses, deindustrialisation and economic collapse.

Google Reveals Hackers Targeting US Following UK Retailer Attacks

The Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) recently revealed that the well-known hacker collective UNC3944, which also overlaps with the widely publicized Scattered Spider, is a persistent and dynamic cyberthreat. Initially focused on telecommunications for SIM swap operations, UNC3944 has since pivoted to ransomware and data theft extortion tactics since early 2023, casting a wider net […]

Huh. This is interesting in a weird way.

Had to buy a new electric kettle a few weeks ago. Bought some cheap $20 one from Walmart. It has a 1L capacity. More than enough for three cups of tea at one time. But it's just me so normally it's just one cup.

The water vessel is glass and completely clear. I'm more comfortable holding the pitcher in my left hand and pouring water from the Brita water pitcher into it with my right hand.

This means the markings (500ml, 750ml, 1000ml) are all facing away from me.

But more often than not I'm nailing it and putting in exactly as much water as I need to put in and hitting that mark anyway just by eyeballing it.

I'm blind as a bat and can't play soccer to save my life but I can sure as hell nail how much water to put in to heat up a cup of tea!

  • Otto Kuusinen: As long as the working class wages only an economic struggle, the bourgeoisie does not see in that any great danger for itself; but when the working class organises politically, i.e., creates a political party which expresses its will as a class, the bourgeoisie begins seriously to fear for its rule. That is why reaction deals its main blows against the political party of the working class. At the same time, trying to undermine the party from within, capitalist propaganda endeavours to persuade the workers that they can do without their own party. One of the manifestations of bourgeois influence on the working class is the anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist denial of the leading role of a political party.

Nothing (meaningful) to say - by Branko Milanovic

#economics #geopolitics #war

The inability of economists to meaningfully discuss current international economic relations has become painfully obvious in their, at time pathetic, attempts to teach the US leadership of Economics 101 lessons while not realizing that the US leadership, under both Trump I and II and Biden, was not involved in a policy to improve the position of US consumers or workers but to slow the rise of China and to maintain American global hegemonic position. This inability to engage with reality springs from an extremely reductionist methodological position where one’s welfare is a function of one’s own absolute income only. With such an assumption it becomes entirely incomprehensible why somebody (in this case, a country: the United States) would get engaged into a tariff war and use other policies that reduce welfare of its own citizens (while at the same time also reducing welfare in China and in the rest of the world). A policy that not merely implies a negative-sum game but is designed to be a lose-lose policy, that is, to make both the originator and the target of the policy worse off in economic terms, makes absolutely no sense for such economists.
