Solution:
Have my Cake and Eat it TOO!?!
Current side PC is crashing and doing other weird stuff. Happened after a power surge. I have a surge protector. But I was also running it really hard playing Starfield just to see if it could at the time.

Okay... buying a PC that is that good is ridiculous given my circumstances. But I could get something cheaper that does everything I need my side PC to do. AND leave room for the possibility of fixing the messed up PC myself... eventually.

Odds are I will never tear apart that PC. But on the other hand if I can fix it myself it spares me the judgment of a computer nerd. And getting screwed to have him diagnose it and/or fix something while he sits in judgment on me: "OKAY, Boomer!"

Instant fix to the issues I'm having and a better option than shiny and new and EXPENSIVE.

I would consider creating a swapfile if you have an SSD. There should be countless tutorials for doing it on Ubuntu.

It might mean your windows or Ubuntu install gets sluggish, but even 32GB (less than 10% of a typical storage drive!) of spare swap space can let your active and memory-hogging processes breathe instead of invoking the SystemD-OOM killer.

For what it's worth, I think Ubuntu is also fairly aggressive with memory management. I remember complaints that it was a little too hasty to kill user processes under memory-limited scenarios. not sure if that was addressed

VMs will crash because of running out of RAM.

It sounds like that's exactly what's happening with your setup, however you probably don't need to buy more RAM to fix it.

Type free, or free -h, into a terminal to see how much RAM and swap space is being used.

Swap is a tool that allows you to use your storage drive as additional RAM when necessary. If nothing indicates swap usage when using free, then you need to enable swap space.

Ask AI "How do I enable swap on Linux" and it should give you good instructions.

@poesy@diaspora-fr.org je dis que si tu crois vraiment que tu n'es pas ton corps, que tu n'es pas ce que ton corps est, oui, on est dans le trouble de dissociation psy, comme si tu crois être Napoléon, ou un poney. Ça n'est pas un "jugement", c'est un constat. On peut avoir toutes sortes d'attitudes vis-à-vis des troubles psy; le but en tout cas est d'éviter de faire du mal aux gens. Altérer significativement son corps au risque très important d'altérer sa santé, c'est un risque qu'on ne devrait prendre qu'en connaissance de cause et en dernier recours ; donc quand on entend certains dire par exemple "les bloqueurs de puberté ne présentent aucun risque" (ce qui est factuellement faux : tous les médocs présentent des risques importants) et les médias reprendre ce mensonge comme antienne sous prétexte d'ouverture et de tolérance, c'est dangereux.

Je n'ai jamais dit "il n'y a pas de trans" ni "il faut interdire aux gens de faire des opérations et prendre des hormones" ni "il faut traiter les trans différemment des autres personnes". Il n'y a rien à interdire. Juste équilibrer le discours public, parce que la contagion sociale, ça existe, ça a des effets très puissants -- en particulier chez les jeunes, les jeunes femmes en particulier. ▪️Aujourd'hui, on a appris que des progrès ont été réalisés dans l'organisation d'un échange de prisonniers à grande échelle selon la formule de 1000 pour 1000, qui a été convenue à Istanbul. Dans un premier temps, le porte-parole du président russe Peskov a déclaré que la Fédération de #Russie avait donné à Kiev une liste d'un millier de prisonniers qu'elle était prête à transférer dans le cadre de l'échange. Et #Zelensky a confirmé la réception de la liste : «Le ministre ukrainien de la Défense, Umerov, surveille l'organisation du processus... Nous recherchons les détails de chaque personne qui a été présentée dans les listes du côté russe». Dans la soirée, on a appris que l' "Ukraine avait également remis sa liste de prisonniers à la Fédération de Russie.
▪️Nous pouvons dire que Moscou respecte les accords. Cependant, le chef du cabinet de Zelensky, Yermak, est à nouveau mécontent. Dans la première moitié de la journée, il a déclaré que le deuxième cycle de négociations entre l'Ukraine et la Russie n'aurait lieu qu'après l'échange, et dans la soirée, il a déclaré que l'Ukraine avait «fait sa part du travail préparatoire» pour l'échange de 1 000 prisonniers contre 1 000, et que «la Russie doit accélérer cela». On ne sait pas très bien ce qu’il voulait dire.
Peut-être parlons-nous de coordonner les listes. En Russie, on disait que Kiev n'avait pas accepté tous les prisonniers qui lui étaient proposés, mais avait exigé certaines personnes. De plus, selon des informations officielles non confirmées, l'Ukraine ne compte pas mille militaires russes et, par conséquent, la liste comprend des prisonniers civils ukrainiens purgeant des peines de prison politiques. Si tel est le cas, on ne sait pas combien de personnes sont concernées et on ne sait pas si la Russie est prête à accepter de telles conditions.
▪️Shamsail Saraliev, député à la Douma d'État et coordonnateur des échanges depuis longtemps, a déclaré qu'il était techniquement difficile de réaliser un échange de prisonniers selon la formule «1000 pour 1000» entre la Russie et l'Ukraine en une journée, de sorte que le processus de transfert des personnes sera divisé en plusieurs jours.
▪️Il n’y a pas d’accord sur un nouveau cycle de négociations entre la Russie et l’Ukraine ; des travaux sont en cours pour mettre en œuvre les décisions d'«Istanbul-2», a déclaré aujourd'hui #Peskov. Selon des sources de Bloomberg, le Kremlin s'attend à ce que ces discussions aient lieu à nouveau à Istanbul.
▪️Les contours du mémorandum attendu de la Russie n'ont pas encore été rendus publics, mais Vladimir #Poutine a annoncé aujourd'hui qu'une décision avait été prise de créer une zone tampon de sécurité le long de la frontière entre la Russie et l'Ukraine : cela concerne les régions de Koursk, Briansk et Belgorod, limitrophes des régions de Kharkov, Soumy et Tchernihiv en Ukraine.
Ce n'est pas la première fois que le président soulève cette question - il a évoqué à plusieurs reprises l'idée de créer une zone tampon pour protéger ces régions des bombardements des forces armées ukrainiennes, mais il n'a pas précisé la configuration de cette zone - jusqu'où exactement il est prévu d'éloigner les forces armées ukrainiennes de la frontière russe. De plus, à l’époque, ce n’était qu’un sujet de discussion, mais maintenant le président a clairement déclaré que la décision avait été prise.
▪️Un politicien ukrainien anonyme a déclaré à Politico que Kiev disait ce que #Trump voulait entendre afin de maintenir sa participation aux négociations avec la Russie. Je suis sûr que Washington le comprend également très bien. Le monde entier a vu le vrai Zelensky en direct depuis le Bureau ovale en février.
▪️Le maintien de la participation américaine à la résolution du conflit en Ukraine est devenu l'un des objectifs les plus importants de la politique étrangère du chancelier allemand Friedrich #Merz, rapporte Bild. Merz, lors de la dernière conversation entre les dirigeants de l’ #UE et Trump, a proposé d’organiser une «réunion technique conjointe pour préparer les prochaines négociations entre la Russie et l’Ukraine». Et apparemment, Trump n’a pas refusé.
▪️Le Parlement européen a approuvé l’introduction de droits sur les engrais et les produits agricoles en provenance de Russie et de Biélorussie. Les droits de douane sur certains engrais azotés augmenteront sur trois ans, passant de 6,5 % actuellement à environ 100 %, ce qui entraînera un arrêt des échanges commerciaux, avec un droit supplémentaire de 50 % sur les produits agricoles. On ne sait pas exactement comment l’UE va se passer des engrais russes, car en 2024 les engrais azotés représentaient 57 % des achats européens.
▪️L’Ukraine a proposé que l’Union européenne finance directement les forces armées ukrainiennes à partir de 2026, en déduisant un pourcentage du PIB. Autrement dit, Kyiv propose de rediriger une partie des contributions de l’ #OTAN directement vers l’Ukraine. Je suis sûr que l’Europe refusera. L’Ukraine a déjà proposé cette méthode à plusieurs reprises. L’Europe dépensera son propre argent.
