The Cannonball Run (1981)

A cross-country road race is based on an actual event, the Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, organized by Brock Yates to protest the 55 mph speed limit then in effect in the U.S. The Cannonball was named for Erwin G. "Cannonball" Baker, who in the roaring 20's rode his motorcycle across the country. Many of the characters are based on ruses developed by real Cannonball racers over the several years that the event was run.

At this point, I think these Big National Day of Protest(tm) events are nearly pointless. They really need tactical evolution and to become more disruptive. Combine them with small affinity group blockades, set-ins, etc. Shut down a port or a freeway or mass-occupy federal buildings or sit in at collaborationist Democratic politicians' offices... anything but a repeat of the same thing with this month's stick-on label.

I'm very well aware of the many values of large, inclusive mass demonstrations. But if that is all you ever do, the movement will be a scheduled spectacle and never challenge power or be able to make change in any real way.

Me llama la atención lo poco que se habla del modo en que la publicidad se cuela en la educación pública y los profesores podemos llegar a ser, precisamente, sus facilitadores.

Mi preparador de oposiciones tiene un canal de YouTube donde sube vídeos dedicados a explicar filósofos. Él no cobra un solo céntimo, no lo tiene monetizado, pero eso no priva a YouTube de que emita publicidad en sus vídeos. Alumnos suyos de instituto, a veces, ven sus vídeos (él no los manda como obligatorios, pero informa de que existen por si a alguien le sirven para estudiar). Pues bien, YouTube los disemina de publicidad sobre trading y “formaciones” para aprender a invertir y hacerte rico.

Pero es que podemos llegar a meter la publicidad directamente en el aula cada vez que vamos a proyectar un vídeo sacado de YouTube y no lo hemos descargado o no usamos un adblocker o una aplicación tipo FreeTube, que elimine los anuncios.

Me parece que debería ser un problema ético de primer nivel y sin embargo ni en el máster ni en ningún sitio he oído hablar de esto. Si no nos parecería ético en ningún caso que salieran banners publicitarios en los libros de texto, ¿por qué no nos preocupa tanto cuando empleamos curricularmente materiales digitales?

Buenas tardes. Os comento. Estamos buscando a gente para la redacción de OrgulloGamers (orgullogamers.com/). Somos un medio chiquito sin demasiadas pretensiones y un poco la aldea gala de los #videojuegos.

Por circunstancias vitales somos cada vez menos y echamos en falta contar con más gente para hacer piña. No hay requisitos como tal, si con un artículo al mes basta y sobra, pero sí nos gustaría contar con gente que sea un poco constante y que se lo plantee para estar a largo plazo. Y que sepa escribir medio decente, claro, aunque es verdad que esto es como todo y hay que ir aprendiendo poco a poco. También toca aprender wordpress, pero no worries ni agobios, ¿eh?

Podéis ver en la web que estamos cubriendo bastante juego #indie, pero estamos abiertos a muchas otras temáticas (lanzamientos recientes, retro, emulación...).

I don't know of a specific theme in the neubrutalism/neobrutalism style (names that are generally used to describe this style or aesthetic), but it shouldn't be too hard to make.

For anyone unfamiliar it's generally defined by flat, blocky layouts, with thick borders, single color drop shadows and a few bold high contrast colors (think CGA and EGA monitors if you're that old). It often features “unpolished” elements like flat simple shapes. Bold fonts and monospace fonts are pretty common.

There are a few resources out there if anyone wants to play around with this style.

Those Who Fuel Violence Are the First to Condemn Those Who Struggle – Marianna Manoura


On 9/5, the extension of my pre-trial detention and that of my other co-defendants was officially received. However, the decision had been made months earlier, on 31/10, when the anti-terrorist police instructed the investigator to attribute the maximum charges to a highly inflated indictment.

Nevertheless, I will not focus on the decision of the Athens Misdemeanor Council – what council would take responsibility for releasing a defendant of the anti-terrorism police? – as well as the proposal and argumentation of the Athens Misdemeanor Prosecutor, Sotiris Bougioukos, who even rushed a whole month before the end of the semester to prove his obedience to the anti-terrorism law by assembling and proposing an abortive report, both for me and for the rest of the co-defendants. By rehashing the words of the anti-terrorist police, he simply repeats its position, revealing his indifference and the predetermined strategy followed by the dictatorship.

But there is no demand from the anti-terrorism and state mandates. We have been confronted countless times with their immorality, inhumanity and hypocrisy. In my case, the prosecutor had the audacity to use as an argument for the extension of my pre-trial detention the fact that on 9/11, 9 days after the tragic explosion and just 5 days after I had regained consciousness, remaining exhausted, with multiple injuries to my body, head and face, I claimed the obvious: my inability to study the case file and to attend a long interrogation process. Mr. Bougioukos also read the Medical Certificate of the Annunciation as he saw fit, since he only retained my mental clarity that the clinic recognized to me, but not the fact that “she cannot speak for a long time due to generalized weakness and injuries”. Double standards are, of course, an expected tactic of the judicial mechanisms, especially in cases that they prosecute under Article 187A where the anxiety of the repressive authorities to cover up the hypocrisy, injustice and rot of their system, their fear of revealing their true face and the vision of those they persecute for a different world, solidarity and equality, lead them to their well-known unstable geometries.

While these kinds of arguments are – unfortunately – to be expected, my description as anti-social showing disdain for human life, by a representative of the apparatus who has always supported and covered up this voracious system, seems not only absurd, but also contradictory. Because he belongs to the caste of people who acquitted the 9 police officers who participated in the murder of Zak Kostopoulos, who unleash rapists, bosses, politicians, such as Lignadis, Manoukarakis, Karamanlis, who crush consciences and lives, who discredit human life, especially those of the social base, workers, immigrants, the invisible, the excluded. To the caste of men who ratify the anti-labor measures and the evictions, who abolish the five-day and eight-hour workday, who tighten the penal and suffrage code, who co-sign the poverty and precariousness that the system sows.

With these people, who serve this system and its laws, for whom people’s lives and freedom are expendable material useful only to serve their interests and purposes, I am separated by a huge red line. A line that on my side the world is fair, without violence, exploitation and oppression, without prisons and borders, individualism and selfishness. I’ve been divorced with their world for years now.
