Out-Of-Date OpenH264 On Fedora Is Frustrating Users With A High Severity CVE

While OpenH264 support coming to Fedora was widely celebrated as part of offering a better codec experience on Fedora Linux, an increasing number of Fedora users have grown frustrated with the OpenH264 packaging in that it's been out-of-date for several months with a high severity security vulnerability.

The "left-wing" strawperson they've created is an amalgam of things that literally cannot coexist in a coherent worldview, so you'll often assume that because View B is totally logically and practically inconsistent with View A, they won't just assume if you state View A that you also hold View B, but they do.

They'll be like "well, how can you say that when I know you believe [thing I have absolutely never agreed with in my life]?"

in reply to Artemis

I don't know why it's so fucking hard to grasp that the right-wing grifters just lie and make stuff up and conflate wildly different groups with wildly different methods and motives.

Like, a person may no longer fully believe the right-wing shit, but they'll still cling to their image of a hypothetical leftist who is somehow simultaneously both a radical anarchist and an establishment Democrat.

Even when they are pointing at real problems, they can't assign the problem to the right source.

#Palestine / EBU Urges Israel to allow foreign journalists access to Gaza

The #EBU calls on the #Israeli government to unblock access to #Gaza for foreign journalists, who have been banned since October 2023. The EBU highlights the critical role of Palestinian journalists and the need for international media to support their efforts by reporting from inside Gaza. Unrestricted access is crucial for press freedom and independent reporting.

ebu.ch/news/2025/05/ebu-urges-…

This appeal follows a similar request from the EBU last year. Israel’s participation in #Eurovision, despite restricting access to Gaza for foreign journalists, may be seen as inconsistent with the obligations of its membership. Shouldn’t this lead to KAN’s ineligibility to participate in the Eurovision, at least? You’d think that an ongoing genocide makes the absurd arrangements the EBU is insisting on seem somewhat redundant.

More than 70 media and civil society organizations, including the Associated Press, #BBC, #EBU and The New York Times, have signed an open letter urging Israel to give journalists independent access to Gaza. They highlight that no independent media access has been permitted since the start of the war, increasing pressure on local journalists and creating room for misinformation. The organizations emphasize that over 100 journalists have been killed since the war began, and those remaining face extreme deprivation.

"I have nothing to hide, so I don't see why I should care about privacy".

First, are you sure you have nothing to hide?
Unless you're the most upstanding citizen who never absolutely never did anything that could be held against them, you DO have something to hide, whether you realize it or not.

Then there are things that aren't problematic for you NOW, but could become an issue in the future.

Look at how many people got flamed online for tweets or posts dating from 10 years ago. Or just look at how law evolves: you might be lucky enough to live in a country that's quite tolerant to every gender, sex, sexual orientation, skin color, religious or political views. For now. But as recent news clearly demonstrated , that's not necessarily something that's set in stone.

And finally, there's the hacking risk.

The second misconception you often hear is "privacy is already dead, don't bother, it's impossible to stay private nowadays

If you look online, you'll find a TON of ideas, guides, and videos that do just that: tell you what is private and what isn't. Privacy respecting alternatives are EVERYWHERE.

Privacy isn't dead, it's never been so alive!

The next misconception is one that's harder to dispel: "They give me great services for free, so I think the tradeoff is worth it""

If you think your privacy doesn't matter, I think you're wrong, but you are entitled to your opinion and you have every right to consider your data a good deal in exchange for free online services.

But let's consider this for a moment. First, the services aren't free. The price for these services is your data. And another thing to consider: you could get great services elsewhere, that do the same thing, would take you a few days to learn, and can also be free of charge.

"The cloud is just someone else's computer"

Of course, if you store your files on a company's server, then yes, they're stored on a computer that doesn't belong to you. That's actually true. But there's a huge gap between storing these files on a datacenter, and people in that datacenter being able to access everything.

While Google, Microsoft, or Apple might parse everything that gets into their servers, that doesn't mean it's true of every company. A lot of companies offer end to end encryption, which means that your data leaves your computer encrypted, and arrives on the server in the same form, never being legible by anyone in the process. Or you can have your own cloud stored on your own computer.

Which program is the one that surprised you most that it is available on Linux?

For me, it was perhaps simple-scan, a very simple and efficient GUI to scan documents. I used it with my Brother printer / scanner and it works like a charm. Especially since I do not scan stuff often, so a program with more complex UI would have the effect that I forget how to use it until the next time.
