If you think about productivity, you can't help but think that having the default state of your computer being an image with a few icons on it is less than stellar. For opening files, it will never be tidy enough to give you access to all you need, you need a launcher or a folder structure, meaning the desktop is bad at this. For opening apps, having visual shortcuts on the desktop is a duplicate of whatever panel or launcher you have.
Next are launchers: start menus, app grids, app lists, whatever else. If you think about it, these things aren't really efficient: you have to either scroll through a list of categories, click one, then click the app you want, or you have to scroll an even longer list of programs sorted by name, which makes no sense since most app names have no relation to what they do.
Most of these menus or grids thus added favourites, so you can place your preferred apps in a special place, but in a small menu, you'll never have enough room. This inefficiency is also why most app grids and menus implement a text field that's active by default, so you can type the name of the app you're looking for. Which also is not that great, because it requires you to know the name of the app.
Next is the good old system tray: this little area is by far the thing I despise the most in any operating system. Not because it's useless, because it's not, but because it's completely inefficient. You start apps from another place, and some of them will stay in the tray, some won't. Sometimes the icon disappears when you close the app's window, sometimes it won't. Sometimes the icon is coloured, sometimes it's not. If you have too many things in there, it tends to fold so you have an extra click to view what's running. Click targets are small and imprecise. It mixes apps and system features. Some apps will react to a right click, some will open a window with a left click, some will open a context menu.
The old menus keep evolving, and they're not getting better. The traditional menubar isn't great. It's tiny, click targets aren't big enough, keyboard navigation is slow, and the sorting of these menus is random and app dependent, meaning you have to learn where each option is for each program you use. If you place that into a global menu, you save some space in the app's window, and you're making clicking on menus easier, since they're always in the same place, but it doesn't solve the menu sorting problem, and the small click targets. If you place everything in a hamburger menu, you're simplifying the default interface, but making it harder to find advanced features.
Finally, Windows and titlebars. We use app based metaphors, and so we need to have a visual representation of each one. Whether it floats, or it's tiled, we all have windows that we move, resize, maximize, minimize, or close.
Again, this isn't efficient. Resizing windows to fit a task isn't great, titlebars are small and finicky to grab and drag, window buttons are small and are moving targets depending on where you placed the window. If you tile things, then you'll need to adjust the layout multiple times to have tiles that have enough space for what you want to do.

DEBs & RPMs are contained in repositories that your distribution set up or that you add yourself. In terms of advantages, these packages are all separate, which means that each package contains either an application or a library: you only install what is needed, nothing more. This also means they tend to use less space as time goes on.
Second, they're maintained and tested by your distributions, which means they should all work well without any issues.
Third, they're all based on a dependency system: applications declare which other packages they need to run.
You install a package as a superuser, which means you grant the package all the rights to do whatever it wants to your system as it's being installed. They also can create dependency hell. These packages need to be made for every architecture, and for 32 bit and 64 bit, for all the currently supported versions of a distribution, and for all distributions.
And that was the main reason why Flatpaks were invented. It packages the application and everything it needs to run in a single bundle. If the application depends on a LOT of libraries that are commonly used by other applications, it can install what's called a runtime instead.
Flatpaks are only meant for graphical applications: they aren't a way to distribute libraries, or command line apps. Flatpaks are generally hosted on Flathub, but there are others repos.
Flatpaks are more secure than regular packages. They're installed as a regular user, and can't install crap that will run at the system level. They can also use a sandbox, with permissions.
Another advantage is for app developers: flatpaks run on any distribution that has flatpak installed, which is basically all of them apart from Ubuntu and its various flavors.
It also means you're not dependent on your distribution for updates: you can get the new versions of your app as soon as the developer has published them. Last advantage is no dependency hell.
Flatpaks tend to use more space, and they can''t fully replace packages: they are only for graphical programs. Finally, flatpak apps might not follow your custom themes.
You can install Snap packages on Ubuntu and all of its derivatives, or any distro that can install the snapd package. They're auto updated and containerized. Snaps also let you test future releases in advance, with "channels". While the packaging format is open source, the server component isn't.
Snaps are very slow to open at first start. They tend to clutter your mount points. Snaps also generally don't support your custom themes. Snaps do have the advantage of supporting command line utilities.
AppImages are an all in one bundle that packages the application and all its libraries in a single file. They're very portable. They also won't create dependency hell, since they're completely independent. Appimages can be sandboxed but not a lot of them are. Appimages don't integrate with your system at all. They also use more space than any other packaging format.
Next is the AUR, it means Arch User Repository. it's available on Arch Linux and other Arch based distros like Manjaro.
The AUR is a big repository of applications and libraries packaged by individuals: they're generally not official, and not supported by the distro or the original developer.
Its main advantage is that is has virtually everything. The AUR doesn't host packages, but packagebuilds, which are scripts that will make the package.
This means that installing something might take a bit longer, and it also means that unless you read the package build scripts yourself, you completely trust an individual with the security of your system.

Over on BlueSky, authors are sharing their #unbound horror stories. Itโs awful. So much worse than I imagined. Itโs Alan Dean Foster vs Disney all over again.
Unbound went into liquidation and immediately a new company, Boundless, popped up. They now own all of Unboundโs assets โฆ and none of its debts.
There are so many authors owed tens of thousands of pounds each. Many of them have no other source of income and this represents a yearโs worth of royalties.
And #Boundless are stringing these authors along. Saying things like: We feel terrible so weโll make goodwill payments of as much of your outstanding royalties as we possibly can.
That leaves authors having to choose between: A. Playing nice and letting #Boundless keep selling their books, hoping theyโll someday get some of the money theyโre owed (while allowing that figure to increase daily); or B. Claiming rights reversion on the basis of nonpayment, thereby cutting their losses to an entire yearโs worth of income and having to start fresh on their own.
I supported several books through Unbound, bought others, and borrowed some from my library. Seeing how theyโve shafted so many people out of so much money, Iโm really feeling like I participated in this scam. Itโs awful. Iโve lined the coffers of management at the expense of the authors.

So, the Slimbook Elemental comes in 2 variants, a 14 inch and a 15.6 inch. Both come with either an i5 1235U or an i7 1255U. Both laptops have a 1080p display, matte with an anti glare coating, they both offer 2 non soldered DDR4 RAM slots, running at 3200Mhz, and one NVMe SSD slot, with PCIe4. They both use Intel's Xe graphics, they're both made mostly out of aluminium and they both have Wifi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, a 730P webcam, and a 49Wh battery.
Both laptops are mostly build out of aluminium: the palm rest, the sides, the bottom plate, and the lid. The screen bezels and the hinge guards a made out of plastic.
The i5 1235U is a low power CPU, made for ultrabooks, so it won't blow your socks off, but it's still pretty decent.
The i7 1255U gets 2529 in single core and 6835 in multi core, which is a bit better, but not a huge difference. Both review units I got used the i7, but looking online, the i5 1235U gets around 2150 in single core, and 6500 to 7000 in multi core. Honestly, if you're looking for an affordable device, I'd go with the i5, it's probably more than enough for most people's needs.
As per battery life, at mid brightness, running videos in a loop in Firefox over wifi, I got 6h on both, which is OK but not spectacular for a U series CPU from Intel.
The ports are a bit different on the 14 inch and the 15 inch. They both provide a HDMI ports, and a USB C 3.2 gen 2 port that supports Display Port 1.4, and charging, plus a gigabit ethernet port, an audio jack and a micro SD card slot.
They also both have 1 USB 3.2 Gen 1 type A port, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 type A port, and the 15 inch adds a USB 2 port on top of that, and a sim card module if you want to use 4G / LTE on the laptop.
As per the display, in both cases its 1080p, at 60hz, with a matte / anti glare coating. The viewing angles are good here, and the colors are ok, but they're not the best displays you"ll ever see.
Both laptops don't have the same touchpads and keyboards. You do get a numpad on the 15 inch but not on the 14 inch. So, on the 15 inch, keys are super soft: they are nice and easy to press, and very stable, but the actual actuation feels very smooth, like the rubber membrane is thick underneath. I liked typing on it. It's backlit with RGB so you can pick the color through an app like Slimbook RGB.
On the 14 inch, the keyboard is really small, it doesn't g edge to edge, meaning that it's kinda cramped and reminiscent of netbook keyboards. It's also backlit here, but with just white as a color.
As per the touchpads, they're your usual hinge based design, they don't feel like glass touchpads, they're not ultra smooth, but they do feel precise, they have a nice click, they don't wobble or rattle. The one on the 14 inch model feels a bit more rigid, with less travel before the click, but they're about on par with a solid PC touchpad.
Now, for the webcams, they're just 720p. They're not terrible, they actually perform decently with various lighting conditions, but yeah, they're not macbook quality. On the 14 inch, you actually get a built-in webcam shutter so you can hide that if you want, and both laptops have bios switches to disable the webcam and the mic if you never use them.
The onboard mics aren't noteworthy, they're bad, like every laptop mic is, they're tinny and they don't sound good. The speakers on both laptops are OK, they have some amount of bass, they don't vibrate the chassis, and they're definitely enough to listen to music, or watch youtube, a movie or a tv show.

Friend just hopped to Bazzite from Windows. I was hoping the atomocity would be a great boon - you kind of can't break it right.
Well, he wanted to configure RGB lighting on his mouse but the flatpak openrgb did not work, supposedly the udev rules included in bazzite by default, are not up to date or there was some other problem. As such we had to install openrgb the usual system-wide way, with rpm-ostree in terminal - something I was hoping he would never had to do.
I honestly don't think an immutable distro is a great way to introduce people to Linux. It's not simple to do some things that are easy in anything else. It's going to drive a lot of new users away. The things that make it unbreakable also make it difficult for noobs.
NGL, I've been using Fedora Silverblue as my beginner distro, and while most of it has been great and plug-n-play with little issue, there's really frustrating shit about it. If I'm trying to look up how to do terminal stuff to install something not on flatpak, 99% of the time the instructions are for regular Fedora, not Silverblue. So I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to use Cisco packet tracer without using a wine app, because a version provided wasn't atomic.
Just yesterday, I wanted to try getting ShareX to work, and was trying to figure out a more native way to do ShareX + wine from the CLI, so I tried to install wine, but it uses its own repo, so I had to look up how to install a repo for Silverblue, in which there were far less results, and the few answers I saw were like "put the repofile in the folder for repositories." I'm so lost man. Idk where these shits are in my files. I tried reading what I think is the Silverblue documentation, but it doesn't explain much.
Sometimes I seriously think of switching to reg Fedora because my life would be far easier when having to find answers, and as long as I make backups, fucking my system up won't really matter much.

This is solved by the various ublue images and distrobox generally. Distrobox basically lets you run those install instructions as natively as possible. Its a bit like WINE but for all linux distros. For example, I can install a .deb file to my system with distrobox, or I could pull from Arch's AUR. Distrobox lets you be pretty lazy, it works most of the time, though some applications don't seem to like it. And by the way, you can download a .rpm file and layer it using rpm-ostree install [.rpm filelocation] if all else fails.
Generally, I feel like Fedora Atomic is the best middleground for linux these days. It really incentivizes the users to use containers, which are far more secure than the permissions anarchy of normal linux. Its easy enough to daily drive too.
What feature does ShareX provide that Spectacle doesnt?
Tried Distrobox, heard about it before but was to scared to use it previously. Seems neat, still having issues with running an application after installing it via wine...

When I looked up Linux alternatives, I never saw anyone mention this app. Also, it uses KDE, and Silverblue is Gnome. I just tried installing KWin since spectacle says it needs it, and it seems to not want to work...
Edit: Rebased to Fedora Kinoite because it uses Plasma KDE, which works with Spectacle. Shortcuts provided are nice and can do what I need, but ShareX definitely had more ways to create new shortcuts, and each shortcut could auto save to different folders, unlike the global save for ShareX. ShareX also can record JUST audio, which eliminates the need for a second app to do so. I just feel like the shortcuts and tasks in ShareX could be hyperspecific.

I switched from Aurora to Bazzite. Call me crazy, but bazzite feels like a smoother experience on my laptop. I can't exactly pin done the difference, but its there. It could also just be some update that went out after i picked up Bazzite.

Yes, via "LILO" you can make Linux work as a bootloader than can be loaded by a proprietary UEFI, but that's insanity.
It's garbage compared to the GNU Grub OS that is 100% free software and can be the bootloader in GNUboot.

Linux needs a bootloader to set things up before it will operate - what is loaded in that case is Linux modified into a bootloader.
