I Spent My Life Anticipating Trump’s “War on Antisemitism”

#politics #racism #antisemitism #identitypolitics

Hear, hear. There are thousands of ways to be a Jew. Once an antisemite told me “Fucking yid, when Hitler’s back you’ll burn in oven”. So I’m definitely a Jew, whatever my origins, my religion, my will, or my opinion about the matter. Everyone's somebody else's Jew, or Negro, or else. The day you get this, you can't be a racist anymore (unless your brain's dead).

#TheFediFiles 11 is back with perhaps the most infamous guest in ALL of Fedi: @ube or as you may have known her, Maija!

Do I even need to sell a Maija episode? Kicked off of over 109 instances, denies the existence of Russia, and... a racoon story (not to mention the Faggot Tourney top seed). Maija's fediverse history is something of legend, and that legend will be codified on this very special episode of The Fedi Files!

Stream starts at 8 Eastern 7 Central this Sunday the 8th. Don't miss it!

If LLMs are basing their outputs on what they've read, why don't they footnote every assertion of fact and provide a bibliography? That would get authors off their backs, and it would also enable LLMs to work as search engines.

I've heard that they don't because of a fundamental flaw in the basic design of LLMs that makes that impossible.

Is that correct?

And is that fundamental flaw also the cause of the bullshit (also euphemistically called "hallucinations") that LLMs often output?

The note to make on this post is the domain. Fly is an hosting company so if “AI lets us go faster” and “AI makes bad code but we’re slowing down to make it usable” (paraphrased) is their self-contradictory policy, that puts a question mark on hosting with them

Also, going “many of you will lose your jobs but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make” is almost admirable as a douchebag move, but it’s also the norm in tech. There is no class solidarity to speak of in tech.

#Palestine / Israeli military sources confirm deliberate strategy behind Gaza school strikes that killed 120+ civilians

The #Guardian reports that recent Israeli airstrikes on #Gaza school buildings sheltering displaced civilians are part of a deliberate military strategy. At least six schools have been struck in recent months, killing over 120 people, following loosened controls on targeting sites with large civilian presence. Military sources indicate four additional schools in northern Gaza have been marked as potential targets.

The strikes occurred after the Israeli military categorized schools, hospitals, and municipal buildings as "heavy centres" believed to be used by Hamas alongside civilians, with airstrikes authorized even when only low-ranking militants were present despite knowing civilians could be killed.

UN data shows 95% of Gaza's schools have sustained damage, with approximately 400 suffering direct hits.

According to international humanitarian law, deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure like schools - especially those serving as shelters for displaced people - constitutes war crimes under the Geneva Conventions and Rome Statute.

Do all dreams have the same quality? What if some dreams need to be chased, but others only come condensed like dew on the unfaltering ground. How dare I equate dreams and some kind of state of remaining still? If stillness words, like peace and sleep are really the stuff that dreams are made of, then the dream is that which comes to us, and the other way around only as a reflection of those qualities we can lie down peacefully with.

As a value-oriented language, English has made "dreams" to be something you could dream about--select your dream and sleepwalk to win--rather than an inherent quality. As with all values, the activation under will realizes the limits of their constituting qualities. Again and again we become sleepwalkers for the sake of our wills' realization, the dream...and yet if there is a real meaning to this, then we can resurrect it by remaining still and letting the dream come to us. No one knows, because there are always hidden variables guaranteeing our freedom. But it would be hard to say "you are wrong" when I claim that sleep comes before dreams.

Well fitting respirators like N95 masks will do a great job at filtering out the PM2.5 particles from the air if you are outside, but they are not designed to filter out all the smoke related gases. You can learn more about how filtration material in N95s and HEPA filters actually filter out the tiny PM2.5 particles despite them being smaller than the holes in the material ( mstdn.science/@jeffgilchrist/1… ). 6/

NixOS is a Linux distribution that is completely and entirely reproducible. Everything you use is defined in a configuration file that is used to build your system. All the services, packages, options, partition layout, hardware, everything, is in this config file.

If you're a developer, your eyes might be sparkling right now: that's right, one config file to exactly replicate your entire development environment.

You also can never get into dependency hell. Packages all declare exactly which versions of each library they need, and these versions are all installed side by side and kept, not erased by newer versions.

To create your configuration, there's a main configuration file in /etc/nixos, called configuration.nix.

This file uses its own specific syntax, that is entirely functional: it describes everything the system uses and with which options, from the hardware, the bootloader, the services, the packages, the apps, the users, everything.

This file is then used to build your operating system. Nix will read everything in there, and install, configure, and enable or disable everything, based on what the file contains. So, if you build a nixOS system with the same config file as someone else, you'll get exactly the same system.

Once you rebuild your system, there are now multiple entries in the boot loader: one for the new build, and one for the old one: you can always roll back to the previous configuration.

Of course, all of this requires root access to edit the main config of the system. But if you don't have root access, or if you don't want to add programs to your main reproducible config, but just test them out for now, you can also install packages as a regular user, using the nix package manager. Or you can add flatpak to your config file, or run appimages. But installing programs will be mainly done using the Nix package manager.

The Nix package manager works on any Linux distro, but also on macOS, WSL, and more. It's preverytty easy to use. If I want to install, for example, OBS, I'll just type

nix-env -iA nixos.obs-studio

The -i is the argument to install, and the capital A is to tell the package manager to install using the specific name of the package, instead of looking through the whole repo, which is way slower.

If I want to remove the package, I can use nix-env -e obs-studio, and it will be removed. Note that installing packages with nix-env doesn't add them to the config file.

NixOS works with channels. By default, you'll use the Stable channel, with tested packages that get security updates only, and major feature updates when there's a new release of NixOS, every 6 months.

To update, you can just run the command

sudo nix-channel --update

This will pull all the latest package versions from the channel your system uses.

Then you run the "nix-rebuild switch --upgrade" command, and your system will grab every new version of every package, and rebuild the system based on your configuration file.

Important to note, the new version of a package is installed alongside the old one. The new versions are the ones that will be used, thanks to a simple symbolic link system that always points to the newest version of a package, but you can rollback to an older one.

To get newer packages, at the risk of having a less stable system, you can switch to the unstable channel.
