Ich freue mich aber, dass innerhalb der Linkspartei langsam der Wind dreht. Dass sie jetzt die JDA statt die IHRA nehmen und dass nun eben Menschen wie Köktürk im Bundestag sitzen, ist eine gute Entwicklung.

Meinem Eindruck nach liegt das vor allem auch an den jungen Leuten, die neu in der Partei sind und inzwischen so große Mehrheiten bilden, dass sie die Antdeutschen (und die Reformer) überstimmen können.

And here's peace activist and CND campaigner Pat Arrowsmith's jacket. It was her father's Civil Defence warden's jacket which Pat wore in the 50's and 60's, and has attached a peace badge to it.

Pat, ineligible to inherit her father's money unless she was married to a man (she was a lesbian), married an anarchist poet for one day to qualify for the inheritance, then had the marriage annulled and donated the money to Sappho and Gay Pride Week 1979.

#Palestine / Israeli [defense] exports surge 13% to $14.8 billion despite Gaza genocide impact

Israel's defense exports jumped over 13% in 2024 to $14.8 billion, even as overall Israeli exports contracted 5.6%. The defense sector now represents nearly 25% of Israel's goods exports and approaching 10% of total exports.

Europe became the dominant market, accounting for 54% of defense exports (up from 35% in 2023) as countries increased military spending amid the Ukraine war. Air defense systems, missiles and rockets comprised 48% of exports, with Israeli technology proving effective against drone and missile threats.

However, industry sources report that images from #Gaza are complicating deal closures. #Spain recently froze a nearly $300 million Spike missile deal due to the situation in Gaza. Defense companies face parliamentary opposition in European countries and competitors using the Gaza war to discourage purchases of Israeli systems.

Sales to Abraham Accords countries reached $1.8 billion (12% of total exports), while Asian exports dropped from $6.3 billion to $3.4 billion due to major 2023 deals with India and Azerbaijan not repeating.

Diplomatic missions from #UK, #Germany, #France and 9 other nations issued joint statement expressing solidarity with residents of Mughayir a-Deir who were forced to abandon homes due to settler violence and Israeli authorities' failure to provide protection.

As has been common practice for years, Israeli settlers established an outpost meters from a Palestinian village. The community was forced to flee after escalating violence and threats. Seven neighboring communities have already been displaced following the same pattern. Tens of thousands in Area C face "high or imminent risk" of forcible transfer.

These countries demand Israel dismantle the outpost and allow safe return. They call this a violation of international law and demand Israel respect the prohibition on forcible transfer.

**DIPLOMATIC STATEMENT ON THE SITUATION IN MUGHAYIR A-DEIR**

The undersigned diplomatic missions express their strong solidarity with the Palestinian community of Mughayir a-Deir. The community's long-standing residents were recently forced to abandon their homes and belongings due to escalating settler violence and a prevailing climate of impunity.

Israeli settlers have established an outpost just metres from the community, which is a clear violation of international law. Mughayir a-Deir was one of the last remaining Palestinian communities in the area. Seven neighbouring communities have already been displaced amid a broader and deeply troubling pattern of violent settler attacks and a lack of protection by the Israeli authorities.

We therefore urge the Israeli authorities to dismantle the outpost immediately and to take urgent and effective measures to enable the safe return of the displaced residents. It is imperative that the community is protected from further violence and intimidation.

Mughayir a-Deir is not an isolated case—it reflects a broader pattern of displacement in Area C of the West Bank, where a coercive environment marked by repeated settler violence, movement restrictions, land confiscation, demolitions and inadequate access to essential services is making life unbearable and pushing communities to leave. Tens of thousands of Palestinians in Area C face a high or imminent risk of forcible transfer. This alarming trend gravely undermines prospects for a just and lasting peace.

We call on Israel to respect its obligations under international law, including the prohibition of forcible transfer. We also reaffirm our clear and consistent opposition to settlements, which are illegal under international law. We emphasise Israel's responsibility to protect all Palestinian communities in Area C.

Just to be clear, when I say that Fedora is the new Ubuntu, I mean that Fedora now occupies the place that Ubuntu used to have in terms of Linux distributions. It's a GOOD thing.

One of the things I really enjoy about using Fedora, is that they push the Linux desktop towards the future. Some call it bleeding edge, but it's not. It's cutting edge: you don't get the absolute latest, but you get the best that's also stable.

Fedora was among the first to adopt Wayland, the first to adopt Pipewire, to push Flatpak, portals, the first mainstream distro to push immutable filesystems in Fedora Silverblue.

This drive towards modern tech was what Ubuntu was doing back in the day: they were implementing the latest versions of GNOME, adopted newly developed programs at the time, like Banshee, or F-Spot, they pushed to have better driver integration, and more software available.

Using Fedora, I got that same excitement I used to get when I was using Ubuntu: every 6 months, there's a new drop of amazing updates. You get more modern technologies, you get improved security, you get new features right as they're being released, and you get that sense of really taking advantage of all that new stuff the Linux community talks about.

Fedora is a "current" distro, which means that you get the latest release of all the interesting stuff, like the desktop environments, the linux kernel, the graphics drivers, or wayland. And they do this without sacrificing stability.

Fedora, in my experience with it, has been rock solid. In general, I didn't have many problems with any Linux distro that I daily drove, but all of them tended to exhibit small issues after a while.

My experience with Fedora has been fantastic thanks to this: Flatpak is wonderfully integrated in the GNOME Software app, it's all a one click install, all updates are handled there, I just never think about my system anymore, I just use it. That peace of mind is something I never truly achieved with any other Linux distro

Another thing I really like is that Fedora has the DEFAULT experience. They ship the desktop as is, without any meaningful extensions, themes, configurations, or tweaks.

It's just productivity central. GNOME, for me, doesn't need anything else than the default experience. It is extremely efficient once you wrap your head around how it works, and providing me with a crutch, like an always visible dock, or desktop icons, would just compromise that productivity.

Moving to Fedora also had me learn a few things, especially how to use dnf. I didn't need to use it, but I wanted to; and since I was a lot more familiar with APT, I had no idea what I was doing.

Turns out, Fedora has a huge community as well, something Ubuntu has had since it began, so it's another checkmark next to my "Fedora is the next Ubuntu" checklist

Were the covid gene therapy injections selectively targeted at people of a non-Indian heritage? If you look at Mark Crispin Millers posts I don't recall seeing many Indians there. Could be wrong but majority by far of fatalities were people of European or African descent.

Have additionally been trying to understand for quite some time why I was being nagged via text messages during covidhoax to update my 'ethnicity' with my local general practitioners office. I got about six messages telling me to do so all of which I ignored. It was a high priority item for them for reasons I still don't quite understand.

There was also the paper that came out of India indicating that the novelty flu pathogen selectively biased certain 'ethnicities' toward poorer outcomes. Europeans and Africans came off worst I believe. RFKjr mentioned this paper which was reported on widely and immediately became controversial - so it was obviously meant to be seen by as many as possible.

Novelty pathogen with ethnicity bias coupled with novelty injections with an ethnicity bias. Would be so easy to conflate the two and thereby validate the conclusion of that paper from India.

And while all this was happening Africans and Europeans across the west were supposed be engaged in a terrible 'race war' thanks to Pierre Kory thereby depleting their ranks, assets and resources etc. Indians were fully exempt from this supposed whacky racer war aside from helping to stir it all up.

The timing of it all matches perfectly with the progression of the corona hoax. I actually think this very plausibly was the original plan which didn't meet expectations by quite some wide margin. Left everyone puzzled and confused more than anything else which was then followed by an awkward pause like it was now fully off-script so no one was really sure what to do next.

Then Ukraine happened and like right out of nowhere AI became the newest current thing. It just blew up exactly as you'd expect if someone had been sitting on it waiting for exactly the right moment.

It was going to change everything then didn't except get everyone talking about it. Perhaps the controllers of the corona hoax were a little too overconfident into its potential as a labor saving gimmick. Now we find out that a big AI project being run out of India was a giant hoax. So that stymied the AI takeover.

Current scorecard looks something like this.

Novelty pathogen takeover = failed
Novelty injection takeover = failed
vaxpass/digital id takeover = failed
Whacky racer takeover = failed
AI takeover = failed

US government takeover = succeeded (for now)

@FediThing Might be. There's certainly some research that might support that.

The writers of the paper argue that because lower-income groups are more exposed to the impacts of environmental degradation. More volatile weather and pollution have a material impact on their lives in ways that the richer classes do not experience.

IMO, it probably a mix of both and other factors and incentives (i.e. the rich are more likely to fall for propaganda about ethical and pro-environmental consumption)

"a novel tracking method by Meta and Yandex potentially affecting billions of Android users. We found that native Android apps—including Facebook, Instagram, and several Yandex apps including Maps and Browser—silently listen on fixed local ports for tracking purposes.

These native Android apps receive browsers' metadata, cookies and commands from the Meta Pixel and Yandex Metrica scripts embedded on thousands of web sites. These JavaScripts load on users' mobile browsers and silently connect with native apps running on the same device through localhost sockets [WebRTC]. As native apps access programatically device identifiers like the Android Advertising ID (AAID) or handle user identities as in the case of Meta apps, this method effectively allows these organizations to link mobile browsing sessions and web cookies to user identities, hence de-anonymizing users' visiting sites embedding their scripts."

these attacks should be mitigated by disabling :javascript: (e.g. uBlockO), blocking tracking scripts (e.g. uBlockO), android without Android Advertising ID (GrapheneOS) and avoiding facebook and yandex sites and apps or better yet all proprietary spyware apps (f-droid.org)

Slrpnk.net outage (resolved)

Edit: unexpectatly we are back online. Will share how we found a solution later. There might be still some federation issues though.

Our instance is currently down and I can't get remote access to the servers. It appears that there might have been a hardware failure of the main firewall, which is the one thing I can't work around remotely.

I am still trying a few things, but I am not very optimistic that I can get access.

The really unfortunate part is that just now I am on one of my rare work deployments abroad, so I also can't access it physically during the next few weeks and my usual back up that could restart it is not available either.

As something like that never happened in 3 years operating the servers, I thought I can risk it, but murphy's law seems inescapable 😓

I will try to keep you posted here on any updates, but probably there will not be much I can do for a while. Really bad timing 😥

Edit: we might use this "opportunity" to migrate the instance to Piefed, which has been an idea for quite some time now. I will keep you posted on that.

As email in profile is an optional feature on our instance about 50% of the userbase opted to not share one so we would only reach some people. But yes, getting spam filtered would be another problem of mass-mailing.

But I found a way to put up a simple html error page and will add this later to inform our members and link to this thread.

I am a slrpnk user. Oh well, shit happens. What makes me a bit sad was that a few months (?) ago something similar happened. Slrpnk.net was down for aa day or two? Don't remember the exact amount of time. What I do remember is asking if there was intention of adding a second admin and making the point that it would be good to create that sort of redundancy. I was ignored.

Mid of july is basically 1 and a half months from now. Hopefully a new solarpunk instance emerges, one that is safer from such scenarios.

Enjoy your vacation and don't stress too much! Shit happens.

Japan births in 2024 fell below 700,000 for first time
Tokyo (AFP) – The number of births in Japan last year fell below 700,000 for the first time on record, government data showed Wednesday.

The fast-ageing nation welcomed 686,061 newborns in 2024 -- 41,227 fewer than in 2023, the data showed. It was the lowest figure since records began in 1899.

Japan has the world's second-oldest population after tiny Monaco, according to the World Bank.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has called the situation a "quiet emergency", pledging family-friendly measures like more flexible working hours to try and reverse the trend.

Wednesday's health ministry data showed that Japan's total fertility rate -- the average number of children a woman is expected to have -- also fell to a record low of 1.15.

The ministry said Japan saw 1.6 million deaths in 2024, up 1.9 percent from a year earlier.

Ishiba has called for the revitalisation of rural regions, where shrinking elderly villages are becoming increasingly isolated.

In more than 20,000 communities in Japan, the majority of residents are aged 65 and above, according to the internal affairs ministry.

The country of 123 million people is also facing increasingly severe worker shortages as its population ages, not helped by relatively strict immigration rules.

In neighbouring South Korea, the fertility rate in 2024 was even lower than Japan's, at 0.75 -- remaining one of the world's lowest but marking a small rise from the previous year on the back of a rise in marriages.

Migrating communities in the wake of the lemm.ee shutdown
I'm a happy lemm.ee user and a mod of a small community hosted there. I'm also subscribed to a bunch of communities on lemm.ee. Sadly, they have just announced that they will be shutting it down. I understand that I can open an account on another instance and subscribe to the same communities. For my own community, I can probably re-create it on my new instance and DM every subscriber. But how do I find all the communities from lemm.ee in their new places? I'd like some practical advice.

@Arindam I'm not saying USSR economy was inferior in nature, merely that the US had a massive head start. The US leveraged this advantageous position during the Cold War to pull of the world economy into its orbit which further shifted the balance of power in its favor.

The problem USSR had was that it was stuck in an ideological struggle with the US where countries were forced to pick bloc allegiance. China managed to avoid falling into that trap.

The ideological struggle wasn't the problem - especially since the existence of the Non-Aligned Movement demonstrates that countries didn't have to pick sides. The problem was that the Soviets made a few critical mistakes (the Sino-Soviet split, the war in Afghanistan, the failure to push forward in IT, etc...) - and were subverted.
