Mass Detention and Torture of Medical Personnel

At least 380 healthcare workers from #Gaza have been arrested by Israeli forces since October 2023, with 24 forcibly disappeared. The report documents extensive torture in Israeli detention facilities:

- Dr. H., an orthopedic surgeon, was beaten, sexually assaulted, and tortured for 69 days at Sde Teiman detention camp

- Medical staff were subjected to “disco rooms” with non-stop deafening music, dog attacks, and systematic beatings

- Prisoners were kept shackled and blindfolded constantly, fed through straws, and forced to use diapers

Deaths in Custody

At least 90 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody since October 2023, including prominent doctors:

- Dr. Adnan al-Borsh
- Dr. Iyad al-Rantisi
- Dr. Ziad al-Dalo
- Paramedic Hamdan Abu-Anaba

For comparison, only 9 prisoners died at #Guantanamo Bay over 20+ years.

Medical Complicity in War Crimes

Israeli healthcare institutions systematically violated medical ethics:

- Hospitals refused treatment to Palestinian patients on government orders

- Medical staff participated in torture and abuse of Palestinian detainees

- Israeli doctors called for bombing Gaza hospitals and exterminating all Palestinians

[…] “In early November 2023, close to a report by the World Health Organization that the Israeli army had killed at least 9,770 Palestinians by that point - including about 4,000 children - and wounded another 25,000, dozens of Israeli doctors published an open letter calling for bombing hospitals in Gaza.”

[…] The doctors wrote: “Gaza residents who chose to turn hospitals into terror nests in an attempt to exploit Western morality, they are the ones who brought destruction upon themselves.”They added that “abandoning Israeli civilians and protecting mass murderers just because they are hiding in hospitals - is inconceivable.

- The Israeli Medical Association justified attacks on Palestinian hospitals

The IDF has the duty to attack terrorists hiding inside hospitals in Gaza.” UN representatives and human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, have repeatedly emphasized that Israel has not provided sufficient evidence for claims about the use of hospitals by armed groups. Analysis of visual findings revealed that the claims of the IDF spokesperson are not credible.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

[…] Dr. Amos Szabo, a senior surgeon at Maccabi Health Services, wrote on social media X that he sees his reserve military service as a means to promote public health, “since this involves eliminating cockroaches and other disgusting insects.” A few months earlier he also wrote: “Gaza must be erased. There are no innocents there.”

Destruction of Gaza’s Healthcare System

Israel has systematically destroyed Gaza’s medical infrastructure:

- Over 1,400 healthcare workers killed

- Hospitals bombed and besieged

- Medical facilities deliberately targeted despite no evidence of military use

- 15 paramedics executed by Israeli forces in coordinated ambush

Dr. H.’s testimony from detention (one testimony out of many quoted):

During the March 2024 raid on Nasser Hospital, Dr. H., an orthopedic surgeon, was beaten by soldiers who “kicked him in the stomach, groin and testicles, ordered him to undress, handcuffed him, blindfolded him and led him to the hospital courtyard.” He was then taken to the notorious Sde Teiman military camp.

Dr. H. testified that during his 69 days at Sde Teiman, guards put him in a “disco room” - a room without mattresses where deafening music played non-stop. He was then taken to an interrogation room where, according to his testimony, “they tortured me for six days, with my hands and feet tied behind my back to a chair. They beat me in the stomach and slapped me while my eyes were covered.”

After 43 days, Dr. H. was transferred to a detention facility in Petah Tikva for continued interrogation. There he was examined by a doctor who confirmed he had developed hernias in the groin and abdomen area. “Despite him saying I needed surgery and shouldn’t be interrogated,” Dr. H. recounted, “I was returned to Sde Teiman without any medical treatment. When I returned to the detention facility, the soldiers beat me, slammed my head on the floor, pushed me into the sand, and kicked and punched me.”

We went ahead and disabled the X11 session by default and from now on it needs to be explicitly enabled when building the affected modules. (gnome-session, GDM, mutter/gnome-shell).


Aside from a simple flag change and a recompile before Canonical adds the packages to their repo, it doesn't sound like this will affect Ubuntu at all. They probably already do this anyway to add their own little patches.

The most likely scenario is that all the X11 session code stays disabled by default for 49 with a planned removal for GNOME 50.


GNOME 50 is when Canonical will truly need to either move to Wayland or do something else.

Seems fairly reasonable of a timeline from the GNOME team, IMO.

6/5 juste merveilleux. Les personnages, la peinture sociale, les relations de couple, les relations de pouvoir, les relations parents-enfants, ... même la scène d'ivresse. Tout est dépeint d'une manière incroyablement juste et touchante. En même temps la vision politique et philosophique sur la nature de la liberté humaine est d'une profondeur rarement vue.

This dim infested burrow might lead all the way to hell, but I would not be expected to follow it nearly so far. My cowardice had official sanction.
