La commémoration du 20e anniversaire du débarquement de Normandie sera minimaliste. En revanche, de Gaulle fera organiser une monumentale revue navale dans le port de Toulon pour célébrer le 20e anniversaire du débarquement de Provence du 15 août 1944.
Cette revue navale du 15 août 1964 sera suivie d’un défilé militaire des troupes françaises, auquel ont été invitées des unités américaines et britanniques.
