Most exoplanets have been detected indirectly through the transit or radial velocity method. But here's an image of the exoplanet 14 Herculis c captured by Webb. It has about 7 Jupiter masses, but with a surface temperature of only -3°C. There's another planet in the system that's much closer and not directly observed. The two planets are inclined relative to each other at an angle of 40 degrees. 14 Herculis c would orbit between Saturn and Uranus in the Solar System.

Why should I continue to financially support the development of Lemmy when the developers operate .ml, an instance that is a prime example of arbitrary censorship?
Please convince me that I should continue my support or advice what I can do. I'm prepared to do my part, but I can only do so if I can be sure that my support is not going to people who think arbitrary Censorship is alright (needs to be based on objective community rules and not on the political agenda of mods).

I didn't realize that I was banned from .ml. Am I? Anyway, that's not the point. My point is to support technology that allows free expression, especially since that's not the case with mainstream platforms. And by free expression of opinion, I mean what is commonly understood by that term – not baseless insults, accusations, conspiracy theories, or anything else that lacks any factual basis. I mean the free expression of legitimate, debatable opinions. That should be the most natural thing in the world.

Peu de gens (y compris, ironiquement, les urbanistes) comprennent ce qu'est une #ville ou comment elle fonctionne.

Nous définissons une ville comme des personnes vivant dans des densités suffisamment élevées pour nécessiter l'importation régulière de ressources. Cela distingue les villes des villages ou des #villes qui soutiennent leurs populations des terres voisines. (Dans le prolongement de cela, une #civilisation est un mode de vie défini par la #croissance des villes, entre autres caractéristiques telles que l'agriculture, les armées permanentes, les bureaucraties et les hiérarchies de pouvoir injuste.)

Dès que vous avez besoin de l'importation routinière de #ressources pour survivre, deux choses se produisent. It did get old though when they were complaining about all the AI art submissions, and then kept also using it most of the time. 🤦🏻‍♀️

But I’ve been overboard for a few months now (from all podcasts), so maybe things are different these days. I’d assume AI art is just the resigned norm now?

It feels apropos to put “Ritual as Resistance” into the world as brave LA folks engage in “resistance as ritual” — the ritual of yet again having to take to the streets in inspiring displays of community self-defense against icy-cold cops — and a brave flotilla of 12 people — now kidnapped, and for the moment, jailed — have helped to spark what many hope is the “ritual” of many flotillas and many land convoys trying to resist genocide with the “weapon” of food, of breaking bread with those who have little to none in Gaza.

Of course, as I note in the intro to this new curated zine, it is “a sampler of some of the modest ways that anarchistic people from varied traditions” go about “defending the sacred” through “rebellious spiritualities.” The 18 examples — each penned and contributed by a different person, and interwoven in this 20-page offering — are not nearly as grand as the neighborly solidaristic uprising in LA (see @jailsupportla to lend support from afar) or seaworthy solidarity of the @gazafreedomflotilla.

Yet as I say in the intro, “my hope is that this humble zine inspires you to imaginatively blur the line between ritual and resistance, until the death machine sputters and stalls, and all that then moves freely is life. For it is us, side by side, that can make all sacred against the profane of this world. Because our love knows no borders.”

Indeed, our power, as this zine — and the streets and sea — assert, lies in our “faith” that we have millennia of wisdom, “beyond the imposed time-space of colonialism and capitalism, states and fascism,” in how to give meaning to the messy beauty of life in unquantifiable, uncontainable, and otherworldly ways. “Authoritarian regimes, also over millennia, have well understood this power. If they break people’s connection to ritual, to spirituality, they sever people’s connection to life itself.“

Let there be “no spiritual surrender,” to borrow words from @kleebenally, of blessed memory.

Got any security advice for setting up a locally hosted website/external service?

Setting up a personal site on local hardware has been on my bucket list for along time. I finally bit he bullet and got a basic website running with apache on a Ubuntu based linux distro. I bought a domain name, linked it up to my l ip got SSL via lets encrypt for https and added some header rules until security headers and Mozilla observatory gave it a perfect score.

Am I basically in the clear? What more do I need to do to protect my site and local network? I'm so scared of hackers and shit I do not want to be an easy target.

I would like to make a page about the hardware its running on since I intend to have it be entirely ran off solar power like solar.lowtechmagazine and wanted to share technical specifics. But I heard somewhere that revealing the internal state of your server is a bad idea since it can make exploits easier to find. Am I being stupid for wanting to share details like computer model and software running it?

Another user in this thread suggested DMZing, so combine your advice with theirs and boom. It’s not uncommon, and it’s fine if you firewall the box yourself. Most people don’t knowingly choose to use a firewall that they don’t intend to work, like you would.

why would you copy paste a docker compose without reading it?


There’s more than one way to use docker. Spinning up an official mysql image using the official docker run OR docker compose calls suggested by the docs would start up a server wide open to the entire internet if DMZ’d.

Whitewashed by history, it is easy to forget the widespread and fervent support for fascism prior to America’s entry into World War II. It was manifest in leadership by such luminaries as Charles Lindbergh who we now remember as a victim of kidnapping rather than the public face of support for German fascism. America’s entry into World War II, and the workaround of the lend-lease program, was driven as much by Congressional support for German fascism as it was by American isolationism.

In just five months, Trump has changed the political structure in a way that more closely resembles pre-war democratically elected European fascism with its plutocratic support from captains of industry than just a simple 'Make America Great' narrative.

The evidence starts with propaganda flooding all forms of media with lies so the truth is smothered and difficult to confirm. Enabling this media reach is the reason Goebbels made cheap radios available to all German households. Today it’s Musk-controlled media.

Pitting state forces against each other is an essential characteristic. In Germany, the SS, SD, Gestapo and Abwehr all squabbled for authority. Today, ICE, border force, police and militias compete for face-time with Trump.

The deployment of authorised non-state actors as alternative agents of law enforcement permits disavowable thuggery. In Germany, it was the SA Brown shirts, but now it’s ICE agents with face masks."
