"We witnessed something today only seen in dictatorial regimes. California Democratic Senator Alex Padilla exercised his First Amendment rights and fulfilled his constitutional obligations to ask a question of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem while in his home state. He was viciously manhandled, thrown to the ground, and handcuffed. This is fascism."

In the lead-up to the No Kings Day protests tomorrow, I hope you all realize how outrageous the Trump gang's assault on liberty is.

On Thursday, the head of their Department of Homeland Security said this about the National Guard's presence in Los Angeles:

“We are not going away. We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city.”

So yes: she *admitted* their goal is not merely to crush protests, but to seize power from the governor of California and mayor of Los Angeles. Today a judge declared this illegal. They will keep trying.

After she said this, a senator in the room began asking a question. Her henchmen shoved him out of the room, told him to drop to his knees in a hallway, and handcuffed him!

This is fascism.

Denmark’s Ministry of Digital Government is phasing out its use of Microsoft Office.. to switch to open source alternatives like LibreOffice instead.

Why? Because relying too heavily on a US tech giant for your nation’s digital infrastructure is starting to feel a bit... well, risky.

Denmark's relationship with the US is under strain, following Donald Trump's clearly stated ambition to seize control of Greenland, and recent reports of increased spying by the States on Greenland and Denmark.

As we head towards the weekend, follow @renewedresistance to keep up to date on the latest peaceful organising against Trump and Trumpism.

You’ve probably seen the Energy Star efficiency label on items like refrigerators, dishwashers and laptops.

Cutting the program will save the EPA about $32 MILLION a year.

Meanwhile, the program saves consumers about $15 BILLION a year in energy costs.

As @pluralistic says about technology, so it is with everything: Look not at what it does, but who it does it *for* & who it does it *to*.

In this example the business case is obvious - follow the money, as another saying goes. The puny 32M is irrelevant, so we'll turn our attention to the 15B: Who is going to be paying it, and to whom?

To the current power brokers the 15B isn't money saved, it's profits they feel was stolen from them & they want it back.

for iran, capitulating to israel and the USA's demands isn't really an option. they won't stop until "regime change" is achieved which really means total destabilization, then ultimately becoming a puppet state or outright occupied territory of israel, like they are in process of taking over gaza right now.

iran could retaliate, and risk a nuclear strike from israel. israel can't defeat iran in a ground war so eventually all out war with iran would likely lead to iran being nuked.

iran's options aren't good. they could fold like syria, be destroyed like libya, or say screw it and launch everything at israel, and risk being nuked and possible US involvmenet.

Do local communities have any right to object to the imposition of alien, or at least unfamiliar, cultures upon them? Is it always irrational and xenophobic to resent someone because of their apparent refusal to learn the language of the country in which they have chosen to live? Is it similarly unreasonable to object to the amount of local authority resources devoted towards easing that problem?

And while it is both dangerous and unjust to make blanket assumptions about any nationality’s attitudes to women and sex, it is undeniable that certain cultures have, by western standards, an outdated view of women’s roles in society. Until relatively recently, it was decreed by our political masters that we should never cast aspersions on such attitudes and cultures, but such restrictions are no longer taken seriously, not after the grooming gangs scandal, or Kemi Badenoch’s warning that not all cultures are equally valid.

Years ago, I suspected the new dishwasher detergent tablets and pods being heavily pushed were a ripoff. I put a tablet in a Ziploc bag and crushed it with a hammer, then measured the resultant powder: about 2 tablespoons (30 mL). That struck me as grossly excessive, in line with the "always fill all detergent cups to maximum for best results" instrux on detergent powder boxes (and then liquid/gel bottles).

So I bought a box of regular ol' normal ol' boring ol' dishwasher powder and started experimenting. 1 tablespoon (15 mL): dishes completely clean. 2 teaspoons (10 mL): dishes completely clean. Mind, I scrape off loose leavings, but almost no dishes get rinsed before they go in the dishwasher.

The math quickly showed that yup, the pods and powders are a complete scam. So for years now, we've had this what you see here under the sink, with a teaspoon measure in.

The dishes consistently get perfectly clean, but I've never liked that dishwasher-detergent smell they have after. It occurred to me the other night I'd stopped the experiment without inceeding 2 teaspoons, so I tried 1 teaspoon (5 mL — probably more like 6ish; I don't level off the teaspoon, just scoop-shake-dispense).

Result: dishes perfectly clean. They couldn't possibly be any cleaner, so all the marketing babble about the pods unlocking whole new levels of Ultra Platinum Extreme Clean are bulk wrap. And the dishes now come out smelling of…nothing.

I'm not gonna retire on the savings, but every bit helps. There's a whole lot less waste this way, in money and detergent and packaging and production. The powder comes in a recyclable-for-real paperboard box rather than a recyclable-nudge-wink-lol plastic tub.

As I've done this much schtick, I might's well make a complete job of it: Consumer Reports' latest test of dishwasher detergent doesn't include powders, they say, because most people buy pods and tablets. That's antithetical to CR's nominal mission; decades ago they'd've done my same math and experiments and recommended avoiding the scam and buying the powders they found to work well.

I'll need to edit that yellow label.

You can't just get rid of whole groups of people you don't like or don't get along with. You have to learn to live with them. And you don't even know all of them. You can't. It's not possible. So, you don't even realize that you are one of them. There is a YOU in the group of people. And if you become a part of a people who is willing to do this kind of thing? There is nothing to prevent you from being next. Because you exit humanity through that door.

Israel just changed how land ownership works in the West Bank. Here’s what that means. – Mondoweiss

Was just hanging up some washing, in between writing, and my mind drifted back to last month's surreal situation - when, out-of-the-blue, that politician took away my literary award. So bizarre and illogical that I needed to remind myself that it didn't just happen in my imagination.

As an author of odd literary fiction, I love developing characters that are satirical caricatures of the most ridiculous and/or worst kinds of people. I really need to hone my imaginative skills, as I could never have created a character so ridiculous and wrong as that particular politician. Or write a scene so unbelievably bizarre. And the word salad speech that he gave in parliament was pure comedy.

How can I be upset when the situation and 'villain' are so utterly ridiculous? One day, I will add a version of him to a novel. At the very least, it's what he deserves.

He would be a character with few lines, and an odd demise. Perhaps he's crushed by the books that he's ordered the state library to burn? He takes his last breath under the weight of Palestinian poetry, Aboriginal novels, and tomes of critical whiteness theory.

I'm curious, do people honestly view this and think to themselves "yup, self-defence"? Are the participants of 7 October in every single building?

International Community Condemns Israeli Aggression Against Iran iranpress.com/content/306409

"This is a simple story, one that should be all too familiar to European publics if they were educated in their own histories.

For centuries, Europeans spread outwards - driven by a supremacist zealotry and a desire for material gain – to conquer the lands of others, to steal resources, and to subordinate, expel and exterminate the natives that stood in their way.

The native people were always dehumanised. They were always barbarians, "human animals", even as we – the members of a supposedly superior civilisation – butchered them, starved them, levelled their homes, destroyed their crops.

Our mission of conquest and extermination was always divinely blessed. Our success in eradicating native peoples, our efficiency in killing them, was always proof of our moral superiority.

We were always the victims, even while we humiliated, tortured and raped. We were always on the side of righteousness.

Israel has simply carried this tradition into the modern era. It has held a mirror up to us and shown that, despite all our grandstanding about human rights, nothing has really changed.

There are a few, like Greta Thunberg and the crew of the Madleen, ready to show by example that we can break with the past. We can refuse to dehumanise. We can refuse to collude in industrial savagery. We can refuse to give our consent through silence and inaction.

But first we must stop listening to the siren calls of our political leaders and the billionaire-owned media. Only then might we learn what it means to be human."
