A friend and I are trying to get a machine set up to work as my school's library's printing computer instead of Windows ones. It is running NixOS. We got it bound to active directory, applications installed, etc., but the issue is that we can't get it to print. It'll say that it's printing but the print job never reaches the print server. To access the print server you're supposed to authenticate, but it doesn't ever give a prompt to. I tried turning off the firewall temporarily to see if that was the issue but it made no difference.
In configuration.nix, services.printing.enable=true and services.printing.drivers = [ pkgs.cups pkgs.hplip ]; (it is an HP printer that we're currently testing on).
I'm thinking that either SAMBA is configured incorrectly and/or the syntax that I put into CUPS for the printer is incorrect.
Current SAMBA config:
services.samba = {
enable = true;
openfirewall = true;
settings = {
public = {
path = "/srv/public";
browseable = true;
writable = true;
"guest ok" = true;
In CUPS it shows the syntax for a Windows printer via SAMBA as follows: smb://[workgroup/]server[:port}/printer
The issue is that I don't know what it means by that. I know the print queue, domain, IP, and port (although I'm under the impression that I don't need the port for this case), but I don't know how it would fit into this. I tried looking around on the CUPS wiki but it was vague and confusing to me. Any help with this is much appreciated.

So...I know a lot of people are not real impressed with the "No Kings" stuff, and I get it, but....
I think that these protests *as an addition to* serious organizing have a role to play. For one thing, large scale protests all across the country lets people see the *sheer volume* of opposition to Trump. I think this matters for morale if nothing else.
Part of radicalization is realizing that the "proper means" of accomplishing change doesn't actually work, so going to an "ineffectual" protest now could be an important step in progressing some people from liberals to comrades.
They have to first learn what doesn't work in order to understand what must be done.
Point being: if you don't think "No Kings" is worth your time, you are probably right, but it would *not* be better to encourage people to do nothing at all than to participate in a (very mild) act of defiance.
We *want* people to learn to be defiant. We *want* them to feel that energy. We *want* them to get loud.
People don't just wake up one day ready to take down the system, do they? It's a process. I wouldn't take the protest organizers too seriously, but that's a different story.
I remember my first protest. I was there as a photo journalist. Just seeing people get kettled while the police screamed "DISPERSE," or seeing rows of cops with shotguns against maybe a hundred or so people who were just trying to protect a community garden.... Yeah. I was already racially inclined, but that really set it.
I think it's important to warn them. I think they should know that the police will just attack people. I think they should all know that cops get paid extra for riot overtime, so they have a financial incentive to start a riot. But some folks have to see it for themselves.
If it's all peaceful, then great. A mass show that does nothing is still people learning what doesn't work. If the cops attack, then at least folks will get radicalized by their injuries. I hope the damage is minimal.
But either way, telling people not to show up does nothing.

This article is terrible.
In less than three months' time, almost no civil servant, police officer or judge in Schleswig-Holstein will be using any of Microsoft's ubiquitous programs at work.Instead, the northern state will turn to [an unnamed, gaping information hole] open-source software to "take back control" over data storage and ensure "digital sovereignty", its digitalisation minister, Dirk Schroedter, told AFP.
"We're done with Teams!" he said, referring to Microsoft's messaging and collaboration tool and speaking on a video call -- via an [unnamed, gaping information hole] open-source German program, of course.
What will they use instead? Who the fuck knows! The article omits this crucial piece of information.
And don't say it's TBD; they're not going to say they're "done with Teams" without knowing what they're switching to. Or, even if they haven't put the final nail in the decision, they have a short list.

I went to sleep thinking the US was going to pretend to be uninvolved with the Israeli attacks.
I wake up to Trump saying "Yeah I did it. I intended to do it. You deserved it. I'll do it again."
There is the tiniest fig leaf here, where you're held down by two guys and one is wailing on you, and the other does not wail on you but only says "if you resist I'll start hitting you too". Yeah that guy's uninvolved in the beating. So glad that peaceful guy is around to not drag anyone into any conflicts.
Also, don't get nukes, because Israel didn't use nukes. Israel has conventional weapons that reached your bunkers through a special magic called "let's all remember what nukes look like from Fallout and Terminator 2".

The initial cope here is that things are proceeding according to some plan. An evil plan, but at least a plan. It's NOT that everyone involved is just retarded and filled with mental illness. It's NOT that, because that is a lens with very low predictive value, and if I can't precisely anticipate things then I'm living in chaos myself and I'd rather at least feel otherwise.
But OK, it's a plan. A plan that the US is involved in, which involves the movement of ... tens of billions of dollars?
What is this, geopolitics for starving homeless people?

Why do people attach leashes to shoulder harnesses on their dogs? The harnesses just give the dogs more comfortable leverage to have control over their owners. Everyone I've seen using one has a large dog, and it's clear the dog is in charge.
(I understand having harnesses for smallish and old dogs, giving the owner the ability to help lift them.)
— pulling on a collar bruises the trachea and can cause permanent damage. Coughing when pulling is a sign of that.
If someone’s not training their dog to not pull, I’m glad if they use a harness.
I find it easier to control a dog in a harness. I can redirect with more force than is safe with a collar. When initially training a dog not to pull, I’ve also added a second leash on a collar, positioned high on their neck, just to turn the head. Pulling to the side first, then back, is key.
Ever want to hate fuck someone?
