Here's an interesting chart (form @adamtooze chartbook blog) which identifies where CEOs of global corporations come from (their previous jobs); so if you needed some (more) evidence on the cultural shape of the global economic elite this is going to be some help.
So, if you wondered why so many global corporations seem to adopt a similar strategic playbook, the role of consultancies in shaping CEOs outlook, looks like a good bet.

Don't confuse someone just saying that something has happened or is happening for that someone saying that something is good or bad, or that they are somehow responsible for the thing happening.
As someone who often toots about things happening in the world I do sometimes get angry responses unmistakably aimed at me for that thing happening and I see the same aimed at others in the same circumstance too.
Seeing that happen at someone else again recently is why I write this now.
As an illustration: Imagine if a meteorologist on TV tells you that there is a hurricane causing or about to cause devastation. They did not decide that there should be a hurricane and just for saying there is/will be one they aren't saying it is in their opinion a good thing.
There are often good reasons to be angry about events happening in the world, but direct it at the actual cause(s), driving possibility for change, and not just at someone telling you about there being something that you are angry about while they are as powerless against it as you are.

Nestled in the eastern Himalayas, the Kingdom of Sikkim was a small but culturally rich Buddhist monarchy that maintained its independence for centuries.Gareth Johnson (Young Pioneer Tours)
"The command centre of the Israeli military is located in the middle of Tel Aviv's urban centre, not isolated on military grounds, but embedded in densely populated residential areas. Civilians live all around, while surface-to-air missiles are perched on the rooftops, ready for use. This deliberate merging of military infrastructure with civilian structures is a clear violation of international humanitarian law. Articles 48 and 51(7) of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions clearly prohibit this practice.
The technology of these systems leaves no room for doubt. The radar covers a radius of over 100 kilometres and the missiles themselves have a range of around 70 kilometres. These defence systems could easily be located outside urban areas. But they are located in the centre of the city. The Israeli military leadership is not choosing this location out of necessity, but out of calculation.
A defence system is not simply being built here. Civilian life is being deliberately interwoven with military infrastructure. The effect is clear. Any attack on these military targets automatically poses a threat to the civilian population. Even if there is no evidence of a direct intention to use protective shields, this is precisely the de facto effect. "
So what is the antidote to capitalism? Economic democracy. With democratic control over our productive capacities we can stop climate breakdown in short order.

News brief in #Haaretz which I think is now removed but visible in archive.today read the following:
[…] An Israeli official told the #Saudi channel Al-Arabiya that American involvement in the fighting against Iran is essential to achieving the war's objectives, adding that without destroying the nuclear reactor in #Fordow, the operation would be useless. According to him, #Israel is concerned that the US will pressure the parties to end the fighting before the war's objectives are achieved, but if US President Donald Trump demands that Israel agree to a ceasefire, it will agree.
While Israel attempts to compel the U.S. into a war with #Iran, the #GazaGenocide persists unabated, and possibly intensifying.
You might've heard that search sucks on software X... maybe software Y... definitely on software Z. The default one kind of sucks on NodeBB too, admittedly.
But why? It's because search is really frickin' hard to get right, and expensive to get good at.
Remember that Google started as a search company, and they became king because they got really good at it, and it was their only product (at the time, anyway!)
The easiest type of search is "full text" search. It matches words exactly based on what you type in. For example if you search lemmy
it would match posts that include the word lemmy
but depending on how the content was indexed, might not match lemmy.world
, lemmy.ca
, lemmyverse
, etc.
From there you start adding complexity like supporting AND
and OR
. You support partial matches (lem
returns posts containing lemmy
and lemmings
).
Add more logic to remove stop words and articles like a
, the
, etc.
Put in some sorting logic to rank stuff higher (what's your algo? Recency? Votes? etc.)
That's just the tip of the iceberg... this problem domain is so vast that entire companies have been built around just providing searching as a service (e.g. Algolia), and it isn't cheap!
like this
don't like this
Search also sucks because people suck.
If I post a picture of a flower with the caption "Look what grew in my garden!", that's a terrible post from a search point of view.
Later on someone will search for "flower" but I didn't use the word "flower" so now search sucks.
Of course a much more common post is someone posting a picture of text, from Twitter, Tumblr, etc. with, once again, a vague caption. You remember the picture, but not what the poster actually said.
Searching comments will sometimes help, but that depends on the comments being related.

Iran carried retaliatory strikes against Israel late on Saturday night. The strikes killed 10 people, including a Palestinian family of four in Tamra and six Israelis in Bat Yam near Tel Aviv, with dozens more missing.
Iran said the strikes were in "self-defence" as a response to Israel's massive attack on the Islamic Republic's senior leadership, military bases and nuclear sites the previous day.
Iran struck the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel's top scientific research centre, in a wave of missile strikes on the country late on Satuday night.
Active for nearly a century, the centre conducts research for Israel's military technology, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and drones, both of which have been used extensively in Israel's war on Gaza.

- Washington and Europe's encouragement of Israeli aggression is a historic mistake and will have major repercussions for the world

in reply to David • • •The problem is that people hear "+4 deg C warmer" and understand "weather as if we were 1000km equatorward" and that is .. a lot .. but not catastrophic. What they fail to hear is the missing part: "and then the weather will be so unpredictable and violent that farming in the open will no longer be feasible" (because if you sowed, it would be a lottery if you harvested anything at all, let alone more than you sowed).
It's widespread death by starvation, not due to weather directly.
