The death of the spare tire

I'd only become aware recently that it's become less common for newer cars to have a spare tire. It was a bit of a shock to me.

The norm I'd been accustomed to was that a lot of cars would include a "donut" spare tire; a smaller, lighter, cheaper-to-manufacture thing. It would shave some cost off of the car, probably let the manufacturer increase their MPG rating a bit. However, it was only rated for something like 50 miles (80km) at a limited speed (say, 55mph or 90km/h) before it should be replaced. It was really designed to let a driver reach the closest tire shop and get a regular tire replaced.

What my dad always did, and recommended, and what I'd done, was replacing the thing with a full-size tire. That way, when you have a flat, it's not all that much of a problem. You just swap in the new tire, and next time it happens to be convenient, you get a new full-size tire. In my experience, spare tire wells included the space for a full-size tire; the manufacturer just didn't provide you with one.

However, in 2025, the situation doesn't look like that much anymore.

A number of spare tire wells don't appear to have enough space for a full-size spare tire. This seems, in my quick skim, to be something more common with hybrids or BEVs than ICEs, I assume because the battery is space-constrained and the tire is competition for space (and in the case of BEVs, range).

Some vehicles apparently ship with "run flat" tires. These can be driven for a limited distance, and appear to have about the same capabilities as a "donut" spare tire --- they can go about 50 miles at a reduced speed before they need to be replaced, and I assume are aimed at letting one reach a tire shop.

A number of vehicles don't have a spare tire or storage space for one or a jack at all; for example, the 2025 Corolla Hybrid. The manufacturer provides a pump and a goop kit, and the idea is that if a flat is only a slow leak, one can hopefully nurse the car along well enough with that to reach a tire shop.

As best I can tell, full-size spares are only common today with pickups or off-road oriented vehicles.

I assume that part of this is because cell phone coverage is more widespread now, and the idea is that one should just call for roadside assistance and have them bring and change it. I saw some discussion on Reddit talking about how a lot of younger people don't know how to change a spare tire.

I'm not entirely sanguine about this. While I'll agree that it can save a bit of space, I really prefer knowing that even if I get a flat, the worst that can happen to me, even if I'm outside of cell range, is that I go swap in a new tire. I've only rarely gotten flats, but it's something that I'd certainly rather have.

I guess that one could just put a tire in a trunk or hatchback/crossover/SUV's cargo space as long as one is willing to expend some cargo space, but especially with a hatchback/crossover/SUV, I'm not entirely enthralled about the idea of having something large and unsecured crashing around the cabin in the event of a crash; normally, a spare tire well prevents shifting around and has a system for securing the tire.

Thoughts? Is a spare tire something that you want to have today in your vehicle?

Need help setting up macOS virtual machine

I have an upcoming interview for a position developing iOS apps using SwiftUI, but I don't have experience programming for SwiftUI (my prior experience was in ReactNative) and don't own any Apple devices so I can't use Xcode to practice. I have tried setting up Oracle VirtualBox on my PC with Windows10 to run Mac OS v12.01 Monterey (64-bit) several times with different settings, but every time I start it up, it gets stuck on the following lines:

  • ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::start - waitForService(resourceMatching(AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement) timed out
  • ApplePC::notifyPlatformASPM - registering with plugin with ASPM Support false
  • AppleKeyStore: 7492:109: unexpected session: 100000 uid: -1 requested by: 109
  • AppleKeyStore: 11150:109: operation failed (sel: 7 ret: e00002c2, -1, 100000)
  • IOConsoleUsers: time(0) 0->0, lin 0, lik 1,
  • IOConsoleUsers: gIOScreenLockState 3, hs 0, bs 0, now 0, sm 0x0

I admittedly don't have much experience with VirtualBox or MacOS, and any time I've tried to search for these specific messages I come up empty. Is there any way of getting this virtual mac running to the point where I can start using Xcode, or am I just out of luck?

U.S. national debt crosses $37 trillion for the first time in history amid rising fiscal pressures

Head of U.S. rates strategy at TD Securities, Gennadiy Goldberg, said that the crux of the $37 trillion problem is that no one knows at what level the debt becomes unsustainable. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged that the U.S. government has a spending problem, not a revenue problem.

Goldberg agrees with Bessent’s argument but states that the U.S. also does not tax much compared to both the size of the country’s GDP and government outlays. He believes that either taxes have to go up, spending has to come down, or some combination of the two, but warned that it’s very complicated to figure out.

The White House said on June 7 that the GOP tax bill significantly improves the country’s fiscal trajectory by including $1.7 trillion in mandatory savings, while Trump’s tax cuts will spur economic growth. Democrats have pointed to analyses showing the bill’s tax cuts will benefit wealthier Americans far more than low- and middle-income workers while also adding to the national debt.

With the recent-ish cock.li situation along with previous events surrounding it and Fedora Mail, I don't think I can trust email services run by a single guy anymore, especially if they target the imageboard crowd and/or use meme domains.

I think I'm going to use Posteo for now on. They same to go out of their way to respect user-privacy despite being for-profit and being payed means that it is less likely to be used for some bomb-threat or something like that (hopefully).

in reply to beard ひげ

@beardalaxy Cock.li got hacked due to an exploit that was recently found in RoundCube (their webmail software). It's still usable through desktop mail clients though, but that service has gone through so many security breaches and legal trouble (mostly due to VC's incompetence, and the services targeted audience) that I don't think it's trustworthy mail service outside of throw away accounts anymore.

What happened at fedora.mail? I only saw it was always closed, and they may have recently reopened invitations.
Aside for it being connected to the post userbase, what gives?

But, in every case, I wouldn't use any of those mails for anything *respectable*. Just find a smaller but privacy conscious provider for general-purpose, and a dedicated service for *Internet friends*, maybe even spin your own for the latter

The first line of her post reads almost exactly like Replika's copy about itself. Here's a quote from a talk by Sherry Turkle:

Consider Replika, at this point a chatbot that offers itself as a friend, confidante, lover, psychotherapist. It’s built to be emotive, supportive, and erotic if that’s what a person wants. There’s a remarkable parallelism between what Replika’s developers promise and what enthusiastic users say they like about Replika. ... In my studies people tell me that they like chatbot friendship because it takes the stress out of relationships. With a chatbot friend there is no friction, there is no second guessing, there is no ambivalence, there is no fear of being left behind.

libvirt VM not getting IP

I'm trying to boot some VMs using a script w/ a kickstart file. I'm using the following script that I found online and modified:

\#!/usr/bin/env bash
\#set -x
## Define variables
MEM_SIZE="8192" # Memory setting in MiB
VCPUS="2"             # CPU Cores count
\#OS_VARIANT="rocky9"   # List with osinfo-query  os
OS_VARIANT="rhel7.9"   # List with osinfo-query  os
ISO_FILE="~/Documents/software/os/RHEL-7.9-20200917.0-Server-x86_64-dvd1.iso" # Path to ISO file

case $OS_VARIANT in
        rhel7.9)
                KS=ks7.cfg;;
        rocky9)
                KS=ks9.cfg;;
esac

echo -en "Enter vm name: "
read VM_NAME
OS_TYPE="linux"
echo -en "Enter virtual disk size : "
read DISK_SIZE

DISK=~/.local/share/libvirt/images/${VM_NAME}.qcow2

echo "Creating disk"
sudo virt-install \
     --name ${VM_NAME} \
     --memory=${MEM_SIZE} \
     --vcpus=${VCPUS} \
     --location ${ISO_FILE} \
     --network network=default \
     --disk path=${DISK},size=${DISK_SIZE} \
     --graphics=none \
     --os-variant=${OS_VARIANT} \
     --console pty,target_type=serial \
     --initrd-inject ~/virt/${KS} --extra-args "inst.ks=file:/${KS} console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200n8"

I've obfuscated the directory paths, but they're all full paths and the script will build a VM. So basically just setting up a basic system, using the default network. Here's the config for that:
<network connections='3'>
  <name>default</name>
  <uuid>61afc7f1-9c5e-4cra-8d18-e3cf4f9358e9</uuid>
  <forward mode='nat'>
    <nat>
      <port start='1024' end='65535'/>
    </nat>
  </forward>
  <bridge name='virbr0' stp='on' delay='0'/>
  <mac address='52:54:00:7c:32:9b'/>
  <ip address='192.168.122.1' netmask='255.255.255.0'>
    <dhcp>
      <range start='192.168.122.2' end='192.168.122.254'/>
    </dhcp>
  </ip>
</network>

Looking at the XML for the VM, I see the following for the network:
<interface type='network'>
      <mac address='52:54:00:07:82:78'/>
      <source network='default' portid='800dfd67-d90a-42te-a0b7-c4c78cdae481' bridge='virbr0'/>
      <target dev='vnet7'/>
      <model type='virtio'/>
      <alias name='net0'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x01' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
    </interface>

When this VM is installing, and when it's booted, it does not have an IP. Meanwhile, if I go through virt-manager and select the default network, it gets an IP just fine. I've tried running the virt-install command w/ and w/o sudo (I run virt-manager as me - I'm in the libvirt group). Looking at the virt-manager built VM:
    <interface type='network'>
      <mac address='52:54:00:5e:f5:05'/>
      <source network='default' portid='d57dbc56-759e-40f9-856f-9623f4801a93' bridge='virbr0'/>
      <target dev='vnet8'/>
      <model type='virtio'/>
      <alias name='net0'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x01' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
    </interface>

Looking at virbr0:
$ ip link show master virbr0
11: vnet7: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue master virbr0 state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether fe:54:00:07:82:78 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
12: vnet8: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue master virbr0 state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether fe:54:00:5e:f5:05 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

Only difference I can see is one is created using virt-install and the other using virt-manager (which calls to virt-install, no?). I thought there was a way to see the actual virt-install command virt-manager was about to use when creating a VM, but I can't find it. Also can't find any logs to give me an idea why the VM isn't getting an IP. Running ethtool on the VM interface shows a link. I've wasted too much time getting this to work, and all the documentation suggests it should "just work!"

ETA: PEBKAC! Remember where I said I was using kickstart? Yeah, well it helps to actually include a network configuration, even if it is just DHCP! Feeling stupid, but it's working.

Plasma 6 moved to Qt6 entirely, and it's also the first version with fully complete wayland support, and Wayland is actually the default session. And that Wayland support is pretty flawless in my experience.

And this release also brings a few cool things, courtesy of Wayland: HDR is now supported, provided your display also support it. You can also set a color profile for each display individually, on Wayland as well. And finally, you also get color blindness correction filters in the settings.

First, the theme is now lighter on the eyes. They have removed a bunch of the blue borders that every single panel inside of an app had, so the whole feel of the desktop is similar, but also nicer, you don't have that many lines that draw your eyes. Highlighted items in list views are also different, now with rounded corners and a little bit of spacing.

Another visual change is the floating panel by default.

The defaults have changed drastically First, single click to select is now the default, with double click to open. Tap to click on touchpads is also the default now, and they've disabled scrolling on the desktop to switch workspaces.

It's now way easier to change panel configuration. The previous messy pop-up was replaced by something much more visual, which will absolutely be a better experience. You get visual representations of the settings you're changing, with combo boxes to select what you want, and tou can now auto hide the panel.

Another big change is the combination of the overview and the present windows effect. It feels like the older overview, except, it looks a lot like GNOME's. What has changed is the touchpad gestures, and these are much, much better. You also get the desktop cube back.

Another change is the ability to just click inside of a scrollbar's area to move the content directly to that area. Finally, Krunner got faster, way faster, and now lets you reorder the various elements that it shows when you search for something.

Visually, the settings are less busy. Gone are the double rows of icons at the bottom of a page, they now mostly moved to the toolbar of the settings app, meaning that settings pages now look a bit nicer. They've also reduced the number of pages that were opened by clicking a button inside of another page, so things are easier to find, and the settings were reordered into other categories.

You get a new sound theme preference page, and, easier configuration of which app will open a broad category of file.

Dolphin received changes to its settings as well, reordering a bunch of things, and it gained kjeyboard shortcuts to access the toolbar buttons and the disk space usage bar that lives in the status bar. You can also now right click a folder to open it in split view.

Spectacle, the screen recorder, now shows a tray icon when it's recording your screen, you can click it to end the recording. It also support recording a part of your screen, and has new keyboard shortcuts to handle all of this. Everything will now be saved by default in the pictures screenshots directory, you can change that of course. It also support VP9 to record videos, and can be used using the CLI

Konsole has redesigned settings, and will use less ram. Text selection now works for chinese, korean or japanese, and every tab now uses a separate cgroup, meaning the entire app will no longer be killed if your system needs to kill a process to save somle resources
