Content Marketing

If we all want more search traffic, the one thing we have to do is make content.

Here are some free tools for content marketing that can help you make the most of search traffic.

Google Analytics

I think you should start using Google Analytics as soon as possible if you haven't already. Google Analytics is the only source of information that gives you high-quality and detailed information.

It's what we have to work with in an age where Google rules. Most of the other data tools just use the API to access Google's data.

When it comes to content marketing or SEO, you can't just ignore Google Analytics. Almost all of the important and actionable information about site visitors, traffic, etc. comes from this key source.

ClickFlow Content Decay

Have you noticed that over time, your rankings go down?

Not just because Google changed the way it works. Most of the time, old content won't do as well as new content because it's old.

The ClickFlow Content Decay Tool is different because it shows you which old pages on your site aren't doing as well as they used to. These old posts should be updated with new information.

First, you'll need to link the Content Decay Tool to your Google Search Console.

Once ClickFlow imports your data, you'll see a report with the pages on your site that have lost the most search traffic over the past 12 months.

From there, you can make changes to these posts to bring back traffic you've lost. Just add more to your content, give examples to make it more clear, and get rid of any references that are no longer relevant.

If you decide to pay for a ClickFlow account, you can even track how often your content is updated.

ClickFlow will show you, page by page, how changes to your site affect your traffic and rankings.

This tool is cool because it will help you save a lot of time. For example, my team adds new content to 90 pieces every month. You don't want to waste a lot of time and money on content that never got many visitors.

Google Search Console

Most people use Google Search Console to see which keywords bring them traffic.

My favourite way to use Search Console is to find out which of my blog posts gets a lot of search impressions but has a click-through rate of less than 4%.

Then, I change each of those pages so that my meta tags have the right keywords. Then I look to see which keywords I am ranking for but not really targeting yet. I then create new content around those terms or change existing content to target them.

Content Ideas

Buzzsumo has a feature that Ubersuggest also has, but it is not free. The name of it is Content Ideas.

Just type in a word or phrase, and it will show you all of the popular blog posts that use that word or phrase.

The blog posts are then sorted by the number of social shares, backlinks, and search traffic.

This lets you write about things people want to read, which means you'll get more traffic.

One of the best things I've done to get more traffic is to translate my content.

A lot of people ask me if they will get in trouble if they copy and translate their own content.

SEOPresser Title Generator

Only about 2 out of every 10 people who read your headline will go on to read the rest.

In other words, the title is the most important part of content marketing.

So, recently I spun up cAdvisor to provide some metrics for the Grafana dashboard. I created both the docker-compose.yml and prometheus.yml thusly:

Placed them both in /tmp/cadvisor/ and ran docker compose up. All well and good, got some metrics to feed Grafana and all would seem jippity jippity.

Next day I notice Prometheus is off line. Hmm, check everything out. Logs complaining of a missing prometheus.yml. On a hunch I recreated the above prometheus.yml and placed it back in /tmp/cadvisor/, restart Prometheus, and it fires right up no runs, no drips, no errors. Before I uploaded the new prometheus.yml, I notice that there is a directory now named prometheus.yml in /tmp/cadvisor/, which is empty. Deleted it.

Next day, same scenario. Missing prometheus.yml, directory called prometheus.yml in /tmp/cadvisor/. I thought well, if it's getting deleted, change the permissions, and continued my daily affairs.

Today, same exact scenario. So, wtf, over? Run some commands:

stat /tmp/cadvisor/prometheus.yml
sudo lsof /tmp/cadvisor/prometheus.yml
grep "delete" /var/log/syslog

Any ideas? Suggestions? Ancient wizardry? Any mystical incantations or tomes to consult?
