Ukraine fighting 10,000 Russian troops in Kursk region, Ukrainian commander says

Around 10,000 Russian soldiers are fighting in Russia's Kursk region, about 90 square kilometers (35 square miles) of which is controlled by Ukraine, Ukraine's top military commander said.

"We control about 90 square kilometers of territory in the Hlushkov district of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, and these are our preemptive actions in response to a possible enemy attack," Oleksandr Syrskyi said without elaborating, in remarks released by his office for publication on Sunday.

The Ukrainian military said the activity in this area prevented Russia from sending a significant number of its forces to Ukraine's eastern region of Donetsk, where some of the heaviest fighting has taken place in the more than three-year-old full-scale invasion.

It's a castle 2-for-1 special! On the right hand of this image is one rectangular tower house and on the left is another, built to a L plan design. See how they each have their own battlements? In between there is a gap of about 3 meters, which was closed up by a thin addition when the castle came into the possession of the Murrays in the 17th century.

Nobody is quite sure why the original owners built two disconnected tower houses side by side and there are a number of guesses. One has to do with the idea of a non-inheriting brother being allowed to build a seperate residence on the same property. Another is as an escape route in the event of fire or attack with some sort of draw bridge enabling transit between the two structures.

Another odd bit about the construction is the towers weren't built square to each other, which means that slant roofed building which now joins them isn't rectangular. The Murrays did some revision to the tower fascias to try and make the buildings look more like a unified front, but they're really not. Harling can cover a lot of sins, but only so much.

So, back to the castle...

So, who built this odd arrangement of two towers (why remains an open question)?

Turns out it was a clan known as the Ruthvens. They're of Nordic origins, but their English name comes from a Gaelic word that sort of sounds a bit like Ruthven, Ruadhainn. Ruadhainn in term means something like Dun Uplands, so their family name is something like "From the fort in the uplands."

The Ruthvens were part of a conspiracy to control the crown and steer the country away from French and Catholic influences. They move him around the country a bunch and for a while exert some degree of governance over the country, appointing people and telling others to scram. Ultimately, though, others who were opposed to this new political arrangement manage to get him into the castle at St Andrews where a bunch of their ilk were staying and get the upper hand.

James Ruthven dies of natural causes a few years later and John Ruthven, also a son of the beheaded 1st Earl, inherits and he appears to have also been a scheming sort, getting involved with English schemes and ultimately in 1600 a very murky event occurs called the Gowrie Conspiracy, about which little is known with certainty, which seems to have been yet another assassination/kidnapping plot aimed at the crown.

So, what went down? Well, it seems like in August of 1600, the king was invited to dinner by the Ruthvens and visits Gowrie House, the Ruthven's digs in Perth. It is no longer around. Something happens at dinner and at the end of it, the king is alive and his retinue has attacked and killed both John Ruthven and his brother Alexander.

The lesson? Never accept an invitation by a Ruthven to dinner in August?

This time, the crown would not forget and forgive. A special bill of attainder was drawn up seizing all the Ruthven lands and possessions and barring their descendants from the peerage for good. Their name was to be stricken everywhere. Their bodies were disemboweled, hung, quartered, and their heads stuck atop pikes in Edinburgh at the toll booth. The other Ruthven brothers were sought, but they fled to England via Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

The upshot is the king took possession of the castle where he'd once been kidnapped. He often entrusted it's care and upkeep to the Murrays and they eventually came to own it outright. The would live at the castle on occasion and the last Murray to live there was Mary, widow of the 1st Duke of Atholl, who lived there until she died in 1767. She'd been a widow for something like 43 years at that point.

Though many of the floors are missing, the turnpike stairs in both towers are still around and the battlements restored to good shape, so you can go all the way to the top and walk the allure. An allure is the technical term for a castle's battlement wall walk!

I was feeling up to it, so went up and shut a screen door at the top behind me. There is a very insistent sign to shut the door. Guess they don't want that doocot to get occupied these days!

Then again, the world record for the standing long jump is longer than the gap by several feet and the receiving battlements are lower. Maybe the girl got up on the very edge and did it as a static jump and somehow managed to stick the landing barefoot on stone on the opposite side and not fall over the edge to her doom? Then again, I'm not the daughter of a family that kidnaps kings and such, so maybe her mother was a fearsome sort and she was properly motivated. The story is attribute as being related to Dorothea, daughter of William Ruthven (of kidnapping King James fame) and she'd go on to marry a John Wemyss of Pittencrieff, who is supposedly the lover in the other tower she wanted to visit. Truth? Fiction? Or just a great yarn. You decide.

Americans more vulgar online than Brits, Aussies — study

Linguists analyzed websites and blogs to determine where vulgarity was most common. They found Americans swear more on the internet than other English-speaking groups.

Almost two billion words — just under 600 of them swear words — were carefully assessed, and the United States then handed the dubious honor of being the most cursing country in the English-speaking world, at least online.

For the Australian duo behind the research, it came as a surprise that the inhabitants of their own country did not lead the way, such is the stereotype that Aussies are easy-going and relaxed, in actions and words.

But Australians were only the third-most likely citizens to drop a swear word in conversation online.

The reason that America — viewed by some to be a more conservative and polite culture among English-speakers — is the most profane community online may be the anonymity of the screen, according to the study's co-author Martin Schweinberger, a linguist at the University of Queensland, Australia.

Jury awards $2.25 million to Georgia couple in suit over autopsy images of decapitated baby

A jury has awarded a Georgia couple $2.25 million in their lawsuit accusing a pathologist of posting graphic videos of an autopsy of their decapitated baby.

A Fulton County jury returned the verdict against Dr. Jackson Gates on Wednesday. The couple, Jessica Ross and Treveon Isaiah Taylor Sr., hired Gates to perform an autopsy on their son, Treveon Taylor Jr., who was decapitated during delivery in July 2023.

They have separately sued the doctor who delivered the baby and the hospital where the delivery occurred. That case is pending.

In a lawsuit filed in September 2023, the couple said Gates posted several videos of the autopsy on Instagram without their permission. Gates initially removed the videos after receiving a letter from the couple’s attorneys, but then reposted them, according to the couple’s attorneys.

Das zieht sich bei #ARD und #ZDF durch: unkritisch wird oft alles geglaubt, was Regierungsvertreter/innen westlicher / pro-westlicher Regierungen erzählen. Das fällt besonders auf bei der Außenpolitik, aber auch z. B. bei der Umweltpoltik und Wirtschaftspolitik. Da werden Lügen zu E-Fuels oder dass Steuersenkungen für Konzerne die Wirtschaft ankurbeln, sich zu eigen gemacht und weiterverbreitet.

Speaking of maps, I've noticed several articles now, especially in the AP, with maps of the area where Iran is partly cut off so that it looks significantly smaller than it actually is. Granted it must be challenging to create a squarish map of that area that includes both Israel and Iran, but I can't help thinking this is an editorial choice. Iran is a large country, much larger than Iraq and almost the size of Saudi Arabia. Obviously there's much more to the situation than geographic area but I do think the choices in visuals can be telling.

There is no proof of anything.

Both Netanhayu and Trump justify their unprovoked attacks on Iran by saying that Iran hates them. Which makes them look weak and immature imo, (and a regime change will not solve the hate problem, I suspect).

Fascist regimes have this tendency to paranoia; everyone is out to get them. This prompts them to behave in such a way that everyone ends having to take them out, justifying their paranoia.
