@professortom I made both my kids get summer jobs. They didn't need the money and I paid for their college, but I thought that they needed the experience. I particularly pushed my son to get a very hard labor job for one summer. It's good for boys, physically and emotionally to do such a thing. My daughter worked mostly food service. letting your kids be on a computer in isolation and be sedentary for hours and hours is doing them a terrible disservice.

Hi, on fresh install (multiple) of Fedora 42 GNOME the KDE Connect app after install wont open.
Either it will stay running in processes but nothing will display or it will immediately crash with an error.
GSconnect doesn't even show up after install.
If I install Fedora 42 KDE it works fine. But I don't like KDE. Any idea what's up with this?
EDIT: Thanks for help, anyhow. In the end I found that I will just use KDE Connect for clipboard between my laptop, PC and phone but the desired functionality I wanted when connected to my phone is available with scrcpy and it's quite something. Can't believe it has such a stupid name as I never heard of it. It's so freaking good!
Hmm, that doesn't show a lot of details but it seems correct. Gnome should have an Extension manager. It should show up if you type some first letters of the word "Extensions" into the app overview. Maybe look if shows up there and got activated.
But thanks, I found GS conncect in the Extension manager... Why the hell is it even there? Anyhow, it works. But the fact I cant uninstall KDE Connect now drives me crazy... Time for fresh system install I guess... Again
Just in case you haven't started reinstalling yet, dnf has a transaction history. I can't look a link up right now, but the command goes something like "dnf history undo ", where the number is the transaction id of the transaction that installed KDE connect. You can find the transaction id in "dnf history"
By the way. AFter fresh install I've installed GSConnect directly from extensions and it immediatelly shows up in the menu by default. The GSConnect from Discover store shows as not installed. Also nowhere in the Discover store it says it's an extensions.
They really need to make this more clear tbh, it's very confusing for people who never used it.
Maybe Discover isn't the best choice. I believe that's made for the KDE desktop and Gnome should come with "Gnome Software" per default?! I'm not entirely sure what kind of concept Fedora has. I usually use the command line or some of the older package managers with more options and settings, so I can't really tell what's best here. These modern and shiny ones also regularly confuse me and I install Flatpaks by accident or whatever. Maybe try something else, maybe the Fedora community has some recommendations for a better one.
So got GSConnect to work... I had to also enable it in Extension manager for some reason. I had no idea it's an extension since I've just i stalled it as RPM package from the discover store.
Anyhow, it's just confusing. I was installing KDE Connect on both my PC and laptop. I never even heard of GSConnect until I started troubleshooting and I thought it's just some GNOME fork of KDE-Connect, not actually a mandatory replacement for KDE-Connect on GNOME.
It may make sense in the name but the name makes it even more confusing. Since it works on Android/Windows,... Why would I not assume it will work on Linux GNOME?

The one time I participated in an IGF, it was in Istanbul and I had to sit through the audience clapping enthusiastically as some Turkish minister from Erdoğan’s regime spoke of how there has to be “limits to freedom on the Internet” at the opening keynote.
I was (at the time; this was many years ago) tweeting critically about what I was hearing. I’d just given up my Turkish citizenship before flying over due to security concerns. A Turkish citizen at the event who was also tweeting critically came up to me later to ask if I was OK. “Yeah, why?” “Oh, because I just had two court cases opened against me.”
In my experience of it, it’s hugely neoliberal. I was shocked how much so while at the event in Rome I was invited to speak at where ngi was revealed. The guy from the UN sounded like Eric Schmidt. He literally said some problems were just too complicated for governments to solve and that we should just let Silicon Valley tech companies handle them. I told him who he sounded like to me after his talk. He thanked me. Apparently I’d compared him to his personal hero.
@Minentromax Why? What’s wrong with Meta? They’re partners with Mastodon at Social Web Foundation. You mean to tell me Mastodon would partner with them if they were horrible? No, no, you must be mistaken. Clearly Meta are a force for good in the world.
Looking for some good, ethical hosting for a static site (no backend; just JS on the front). Sick of Netlify and its bandwidth limits / threats. No CI needed, I don't think. Just drag and drop the folder into place?
Likely overkill/not as performant as could be for a static site but let me know if you’d like to take this as an opportunity to play with Kitten and see how it holds up. Deployment would be via git push to your repo and I can set you up on a small-web.org subdomain and you can then point whatever domain you want to it from Kitten’s settings. Again: (a) won’t be as performant as a fine-tuned static site server, (b) not sure how it’ll hold up under load but willing to test it if you are. Will repost your post anyway so others can suggest perhaps more suitable options 😀
(One positive would be if you ever wanted to add server-side functionality, Kitten makes it very simple to layer it on with basic JS and even includes an in-process JS database.)

Palestine Action said that pro-Israel groups had lobbied for the ban and there is evidence to support that contention. Internal government documents released under freedom of information laws have revealed meetings, apparently to discuss Palestine Action, between the government and Israeli embassy officials, although they were heavily redacted. Ministers have also met representatives from the Israeli arms firm Elbit Systems. The organisation We Believe in Israel, which Labour MP Luke Akehurst used to be director of, began a campaign this month to ban Palestine Action. In an accompanying report, it stated: "In July 2022, the group was investigated under counter-terrorism protocols following intelligence suggesting contact between some of its members and individuals linked to Hamas-aligned networks abroad (see: Metropolitan Police briefing, classified). "While the investigation yielded no direct terror charges, it underscored the degree of concern shared by law enforcement agencies over Palestine Action's increasingly radicalised behaviour." It is not clear how or why We Believe in Israel was granted access to classified documents. There was no reference to links to Hamas in Cooper's statement but she did refer to Palestine Action as threatening infrastructure which supports Ukraine and Nato, echoing language in We Believe in Israel's report.
