‘FuckLAPD.com’ Lets Anyone Use Facial Recognition to Instantly Identify Cops
A new site, FuckLAPD.com, is using public records and facial recognition technology to allow anyone to identify police officers in Los Angeles they have a picture of. The tool, made by artist Kyle McDonald, is designed to help people identify cops who may otherwise try to conceal their identity, such as covering their badge or serial number.
“We deserve to know who is shooting us in the face even when they have their badge covered up,” McDonald told me when I asked if the site was made in response to police violence during the LA protests against ICE that started earlier this month. “fucklapd.com is a response to the violence of the LAPD during the recent protests against the horrific ICE raids. And more broadly—the failure of the LAPD to accomplish anything useful with over $2B in funding each year.”
“Cops covering up their badges? ID them with their faces instead,” the site, which McDonald said went live this Saturday. The tool allows users to upload an image of a police officer’s face to search over 9,000 LAPD headshots obtained via public record requests. The site says image processing happens on the device, and no photos or data are transmitted or saved on the site. “Blurry, low-resolution photos will not match,” the site says.
“fucklapd.com uses data provided by the City of Los Angeles directly to the public,” McDonald told me in an email. “This data has been provided in response to either public records requests or public records lawsuits. That means all of this information belongs to the public and is a matter of public record. fucklapd.com is not scraping any data.”
In addition to potentially identifying officers by name and serial number, FuckLAPD.com also pulls up a police officer’s salary.
“Surprisingly it [the domain name] only costs $10 a year to exercise my first amendment right to say fucklapd.com,” McDonald said. playlist.megaphone.fm?p=TBIEA2… I tested the tools by grabbing an image of a white and bald police officer from an LAPD press conference addressing its use of force during the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. I uploaded the image to the site, and within a few seconds the site presented me with nine headshots of officers who could be possible matches, all of them bald white men. The first correctly identified the cop in the image I uploaded.
Clicking “view profile” under the result sent me to the Watch the Watchers site by the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, a community group based in the Skid Row neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles. “All of the information on this website comes from records that were deliberately made public by the City of Los Angeles in response to either public records requests or public records lawsuits,” the Watch the Watchers site says. “We plan to keep refreshing this data from new public records requests as well as to add other data.” Stop LAPD Spying Coalition is not associated with FuckLAPD.com and did not endorse the site.
McDonald told me that since the site launched, it had around 50,000 visitors, but “Because the analysis happens on-device I have no way of knowing what people are using it for, except for some people who have posted screenshots to Twitter or Instagram,” he said.
In 2018 McDonald made another tool called ICEspy which used hundreds of photos of ICE employees from LinkedIn and does much the same thing as FuckLAPD.com. “This app is designed to highlight and embarrass the organization committing atrocities against refugees and immigrants to the United States,” ICEspy’s website says. That tool originally used a Microsoft API, before Microsoft restricted access to it. McDonald said on X that he recently relaunched the tool to run locally on devices. 404 Media tested ICEspy using images of ICE employees on LinkedIn to verify if the tool worked and each result was incorrect; McDonald indicated on X he was looking for others to re-scrape LinkedIn and update the database.
Over the last few months ICE officers have consistently worn masks, neck gaiters, sunglasses, and baseball caps to shield their identity while often refusing to provide their name or even confirm the agency they belong to. This includes while violently assaulting people, detaining U.S. citizens, and pointing weapons at bystanders, leaving little room for recourse or accountability against the individual agents or the agency.
ICE’s constant use of masks has created a climate where people cannot be sure that the heavily armed group of men coming towards them are really federal agents or not. In Philadelphia, a man pretended to be an ICE agent in order to rob an auto repair shop and zip tie an employee. In Brooklyn, a man posed as an immigration officer before attempting to rape a woman.

i voted for the money. I consider myself intelligent enough to do the job i'm doing. I've never run into a problem where I felt "If I was just a bit more intelligent I could do this". I've never found something impossible for me to learn, even if it takes some effort to learn it. So, I think if I were twice as intelligent, I would perhaps have more genius insights or figure things out faster, but twice as much money would let me buy a house and have a much more stable life, which would be better for my wellbeing than being a prodigious genius, which might well make me more depressed than I currently am.
How about we flat out abduct Khamenei, Netanyahu, Putin and Zelensky. Relocate them here, maybe Texas. And make them fight to the death in televised cage matches. The loser's countries get obliterated by the US nuclear arsenal. The winner remains in captivity for the next season.

Just a shot in the dark... if you've had any tick bites, have you by chance ruled out alpha gal syndrome? (They order an antibody blood test.) A wide variety of skin issues are common reactions, often occurring many, many hours after eating problematic foods, which can make it hard to make the connection.
no tick bites - I did have 3 insect bites last summer which gave me problems - might be worth looking into. He's discovered liver issues and I think it's because I internalized the horror of the last 5 years - and it came out expressing through the skin. Have to say being hobbled is tiresome but it's forced me slow down, digest and start writing again

But then where to go? Which conservative church has it right?
I've studied the Bible & theology enough to have several areas where I can see valid arguments from scripture for the various conservative Christian denominational positions on things like baptism, sacraments, priesthood of all believers, justification by faith alone, ordination of women, etc. but not one church has everything right doctrinally.
I do attend Bible study run by a conservative local pastor but with people from variety of traditions & that's what makes study interesting & lively, because we all take Bible seriously even if we do not always agree.
Rural resident so churches are quite geographically spread out. I've tried around seven different churches over the years but not found a permanent home. I'm stuck being a lone ranger Christian. Not the way it is supposed to be....but the way it is.

When first learning about Orthodoxy, I was quite struck by idea that it's "predenominational". So when I became intensely Christian-curious and wanted community, I figured I'd start at the root of it all and go from there. Ends up Orthodox theology and biblical interpretation are the first that have made sense to me and seemed internally consistent. 🤷♀️
For me, conservative Lutheranism shows fidelity to Word while not necessarily rejecting all tradition- only that which makes void the Word of God.
But embracing infant baptism is a tricky one for me. I would even point to rite of "confirmation" as a tacit admission by Western churches that practice infant baptism, that some kind of real faith & commitment is needed from the individual at some point in spiritual journey.

I barely dare try to articulate my feeble grasp/why I'm comfortable with it now. It's only come through just starting to understand, and personally experiencing, how the holy traditions of the church–baptism, liturgy, Eucharist, confession–combine to gently orient a soul towards God; and, at the same time, each person themselves chooses to maintain that orientation, even after being baptized at whatever age.

If human parents give gifts to infants & toddlers, without demanding they be old enough to write a thank you letter then why can't God through church bring baptism to infants & children?

My poor kitty Lola. She still poops on the floor, which is semi-manageable now because I place puppy pads next to the litterbox. She also has blood in her urine. She's had 2 rounds of antibiotics and her culture is bacteria-free, so she has "idiopathic cystitis," ie no known cause. The vet suggests I give her Gabapentin to "manage stress," and I guess I'll try it, but I doubt the cause is "stress." I'm considering that the cats got Covid from me in 2023, when I was completely bed-bound for 4 weeks and sick for months, and that may be the source of their autoimmune disease too (they both have IBD) and complications. Which means, not much to be done. They're already both on prednisone for IBD, which shortens their lives all by itself. We (meaning my Mom, they're her cats too) have spent a lot of money on teats and treatments and vet visits, and some point need to stop and let the inevitable occur. My poor kitty.

‘FuckLAPD.com’ Lets Anyone Use Facial Recognition to Instantly Identify Cops
A new site, FuckLAPD.com, is using public records and facial recognition technology to allow anyone to identify police officers in Los Angeles they have a picture of. The tool, made by artist Kyle McDonald, is designed to help people identify cops who may otherwise try to conceal their identity, such as covering their badge or serial number.
“We deserve to know who is shooting us in the face even when they have their badge covered up,” McDonald told me when I asked if the site was made in response to police violence during the LA protests against ICE that started earlier this month. “fucklapd.com is a response to the violence of the LAPD during the recent protests against the horrific ICE raids. And more broadly—the failure of the LAPD to accomplish anything useful with over $2B in funding each year.”
“Cops covering up their badges? ID them with their faces instead,” the site, which McDonald said went live this Saturday. The tool allows users to upload an image of a police officer’s face to search over 9,000 LAPD headshots obtained via public record requests. The site says image processing happens on the device, and no photos or data are transmitted or saved on the site. “Blurry, low-resolution photos will not match,” the site says.
“fucklapd.com uses data provided by the City of Los Angeles directly to the public,” McDonald told me in an email. “This data has been provided in response to either public records requests or public records lawsuits. That means all of this information belongs to the public and is a matter of public record. fucklapd.com is not scraping any data.”
In addition to potentially identifying officers by name and serial number, FuckLAPD.com also pulls up a police officer’s salary.
“Surprisingly it [the domain name] only costs $10 a year to exercise my first amendment right to say fucklapd.com,” McDonald said. playlist.megaphone.fm?p=TBIEA2… I tested the tools by grabbing an image of a white and bald police officer from an LAPD press conference addressing its use of force during the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. I uploaded the image to the site, and within a few seconds the site presented me with nine headshots of officers who could be possible matches, all of them bald white men. The first correctly identified the cop in the image I uploaded.
Clicking “view profile” under the result sent me to the Watch the Watchers site by the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, a community group based in the Skid Row neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles. “All of the information on this website comes from records that were deliberately made public by the City of Los Angeles in response to either public records requests or public records lawsuits,” the Watch the Watchers site says. “We plan to keep refreshing this data from new public records requests as well as to add other data.” Stop LAPD Spying Coalition is not associated with FuckLAPD.com and did not endorse the site.
McDonald told me that since the site launched, it had around 50,000 visitors, but “Because the analysis happens on-device I have no way of knowing what people are using it for, except for some people who have posted screenshots to Twitter or Instagram,” he said.
In 2018 McDonald made another tool called ICEspy which used hundreds of photos of ICE employees from LinkedIn and does much the same thing as FuckLAPD.com. “This app is designed to highlight and embarrass the organization committing atrocities against refugees and immigrants to the United States,” ICEspy’s website says. That tool originally used a Microsoft API, before Microsoft restricted access to it. McDonald said on X that he recently relaunched the tool to run locally on devices. 404 Media tested ICEspy using images of ICE employees on LinkedIn to verify if the tool worked and each result was incorrect; McDonald indicated on X he was looking for others to re-scrape LinkedIn and update the database.
Over the last few months ICE officers have consistently worn masks, neck gaiters, sunglasses, and baseball caps to shield their identity while often refusing to provide their name or even confirm the agency they belong to. This includes while violently assaulting people, detaining U.S. citizens, and pointing weapons at bystanders, leaving little room for recourse or accountability against the individual agents or the agency.
ICE’s constant use of masks has created a climate where people cannot be sure that the heavily armed group of men coming towards them are really federal agents or not. In Philadelphia, a man pretended to be an ICE agent in order to rob an auto repair shop and zip tie an employee. In Brooklyn, a man posed as an immigration officer before attempting to rape a woman.

As far as I can tell, there is one spinal neurosurgeon in New Mexico scheduling appointments in 2025, and I had to change insurance to get a policy that covered him. All the rest are booked into next year.
Crikey! Well done for finding him. We had to pay privately some years ago, for my dad to have spinal surgery, he was in his 80’s and the NHS said he was too old. They gave him 6 months before he’d need a wheelchair. He lived to 97 and stubbornly walked till the end.

A for long-term prospects, my primary doc is approaching back surgery #8, and gets around better than I do, so there may be hope. I just want to make it to Medicare age before they take that away.
This heat wave is absolutely bone crushing, and I'm so glad that I installed central air two years ago.
But if you are without central air, or you're dealing with a heat wave for the first time because it's reaching areas that don't historically get this hot, here are a few tips from my years of poverty in a desert:
1. Pay attention to what direction your residence faces, and where the windows are. Cover/close all east and north facing windows in the first half of the day, and south and west starting no later than 10am.
I do this, it makes a huge difference. I close all my windows when the temp outside rises above inside temp. And open them again when temp equalizes on the way down/nighttime. Also, if you have multi-level dwelling, open windows on all floors, sometimes a breeze develops going up/down stairs.
2. Keep air moving, even if you can't open any windows. Ceiling fans are better than nothing, but hot air rises, so I find that big box fans work better. If you are using ceiling fans, make sure they're rotating counter-clockwise (they should have a switch)
During the brutal heat dome here we put damp towels in the freezer for our pets as well. The dog liked to lay on them and the cat like them draped over him. My pup also had an evaporative bandana that helped a lot because she was a tiny old lady and it sat right against her chest.
So much great information, you are truly doing a public service. Let's not forget that it is often the elderly and disadvantaged that are the most vulnerable to the heat. They are also less likely to have access to this possibly life-saving information, so check in on your neighbors and make sure they are OK.
When I lived in ‘the valley’ in LA with no AC in the bedroom, I was fortunate enough to be able to shift my schedule I slept until it was too hot to sleep and then went to work only returning home well after dark.

I used to dampen a sheet or towel (lasts longer) and use it as a blanket. It’s gross for a minute, then it’s fine…and it does really help. It becomes like a weighted blanket that cools.
I haven't seen solar cooking mentioned yet. I have used a box cooker successfully for bread, cookies, biscuits, and of course quesadillas. Where I live is dry heat, so I don't know how humidity would change things.
I'll rarely use my oven from June-September due to the heat- but I do love baking cookies.
(I also have small batch recipes that yield only 4-6 cookies at a time. Some other people I know make up their regular batch, divide it up, and freeze for later.)
