Hi!. Currently running Linux Mint 22.1, but i suspect it's not strictly a distro issue. This laptop was running VERY well but was outdated, running Mint 19.3, some things were unable to be installed because the system libraries were old (didn't expect Calibre to be one of them, figures), so i updated all the way to that moment's current version which was Mint 21.3. All of a sudden it felt like the laptop got downgraded two whole computer tech generations. As soon as i ask it to do something mildly complicated that made it break no sweat on Mint 19, it gets VERY slow, all the cores start running at max, system load increases, until it finishes doing whatever it was doing several minutes later, something between a couple of minutes when lucky, to 20 or more. Typically what triggers the issue is something on the browser (what i use the most on the computer is browser tabs and lots of terminals) but not exclusively. Thought it was the browser but replicated it on an empty Firefox profile, and has triggered with simpler stuff like the Discord client. Been trying to find the issue for a while trying to avoid a full reinstall, no luck so far.
If i were to describe how it feels, it's like there was a bottleneck on tasks being done by the system, as soon as you ask it to do something mildly complex it chokes on it and tasks accumulate. No idea if it's some kind of kernel misconfiguration, if it's some hardware incompatibility, or something else entirely, checking the changelogs of Mint all the way between 19.3 and 21.3 showed nothing i could pin this onto (or at least nothing i could notice).
The nuclear option would be a brand new blank install but I'd MUCH rather avoid that if possible, made the comfortable but now unwise choice of a single partition for everything (instead of a separate /home and whatnot as i used to do) so reinstallation would wipe it completely, if i must then i must but much rather not.
Would welcome VERY much ideas on stuff to check or try.
Edit: It's got an NVME drive, which seems to be healthy as far as i can see
Edit: When it happens it doesn't seem to matter how much RAM is free, seen it happen with only 8 of the 32Gb of RAM in use and zero swap
Edit: Found a great way to describe how it feels like: Have you done heavy video encoding on a computer that's adequate for the task but not more than that, and noticed how everything in it stalls heavily, even if there's plenty of RAM free and the computer feels like it's giving everything to that task only? Pretty much that, but for nearly everything even moderately heavy
When this happens, open a TTY by hitting ALT+F2, login, then run top to get a listing of what's running on your machine. It should should what's hitting the CPU at the top of the list.
It would also be good to get an idea of your memory situation, so also run free -m.
Aside from checking the kernel log (sudo dmesg) and system log (sudo journalctl -xe) for any interesting messages, I might suggest simply watching for any processes which are abnormally high while the system is running slow. My initial approach would be to use htop (disable "Hide Kernel Threads" and enable "Detailed CPU Time"), and seeing which processes, if any, are eating up your CPU time. The colored core utilization bars at the top show how much CPU time is being spent on what: gray for disk wait, red for kernel, green for regular user process, etc. That information will be a good starting point.
Really long freezes, while it could be something else, are often caused by the RAM being full, this is called thrashing.
Big memory hogs like the browser or discord could trigger thrashing behaviour if you're already low on RAM. Since this happened after an update, the most likely cause is a bug in any one of the many processes that are running on your computer. That kind of bug is called a memory leak, where a process is requesting memory for something, but then fails to give it back when no longer needed.
You should monitor memory usage to see if it is that, and to find out what process it is.

Ok that's weird. My first guess would be something kernel-related, so maybe try booting the old kernel if you still have it, or just try a different kernel.
I'm guessing you've already turned it off and on again. If not, seriously, do that. It works more time than it doesn't for random weirdness.
Run 'htop' and sort by CPU (it's a friendlier and better version of 'top'. That'll show you what processes are using the most CPU
Whilst you're in there, check the free memory. If that's low, or swap usage is high, then use htop to sort by memory usage to find what's using the most.
If you see processes you don't recognise, hit google and find out why. It's very unlikely they're malicious, but it's far less common on linux than Windows to have random processes doing unknown stuff. If it's using a lot of cpu or memory, there'll be a reason. It might be a dumb reason, but you will be able to find it out.
And then when you know what the guilty process is, if it is that, and it's not critical - you can stop it with systemctl and narrow down what's afoot.
It's happening with whatever is the heaviest process at the moment and has happened for months, MANY reboots since then. Usually the heaviest process is the browser, but not always
Ι'd suggest you try another kernel. This sounds like a kernel/driver issue, since the ssd seems to be healthy. Mint lets you pick from newer kernels, from within the update app. This might solve your issue, or you might want to upgrade to 22.1 too.
Try isolating anything unique to your installation by booting from a live USB of Mint 22.1 or 21.3 and go about your workflow. If it gives the same symptoms, boot from a live USB of Mint 19.3. Hopefully nothing bad happened to your hardware during the update.
Apologies for the late response. And this is probs not what you'd like to hear. But I've heard some industry veterans refer to this as an inevitability of the 'old' model. I believe a radical approach is required to prevent this from happening the next time. Wish ya good luck fam!

Given that as i mentioned elsewhere i did not separate the /home into it's own partition like I've been doing since the 90s, formatting this thing right now would likely lead to losing stuff, i need to organize the files first before i do the nuclear option: A full reformat/reinstall. If that makes no difference in the end, I'll have to consider the possibility of getting a new one. No idea how long will each step take so not the foggiest on when will i do each thing, and that's even without taking procrastination into consideration... 😅

My Tiny Dog, picture attached, has some trauma (we know not what) in her past.
When she goes to sleep with her head in my hand I feel like the luckiest person in the world to be trusted by this tiny creature with no reason to trust people.
Other things that bring me hope/joy are: • My son texting me out of the blue to ask how I am. • A painting my husband and I bought recently as a belated celebration of our 25th Wedding Anniversary. • My niece and nephews. • Seeing plant life growing out of man made structures (it feels like a perfect "fuck you, I will prevail" from nature • Dancing • Hearing kids laughing
I teach kids to play chess (adults too). I don't have any ambitions to teach the next World Champion. I just want to teach the joy of playing a game, of enjoying a pastime. I want to help change the culture of laughing at the chess nerds, at making kids appreciate that they can enjoy whatever pastime they want, and let others enjoy what they want.
So it gives me a ray of hope when a child starts playing chess, and I taught their parent! The parent fondly remembers the chess class and has no problem encouraging their kid to try it out. It gives me hope when I can positively impact someone's life, even in the smallest way, and then they pay it forward.
I used to have a dalmatian who was abandoned by her former owners. She showed some signs of having been abused, but I didn't know her history. With me, she became a fat funny grrrl with a huge personality. She loved the nat'l forest and fig newtons, and had a huge heart. After she went blind, we developed a way for me to move her leash so she knew when to step up or go left or right. She trusted me enough to run on leash. And she was really patient when the toddler pulled her ears.
i trained dogs as a side gig and volunteered to rehab former fighting dogs. Some couldn’t be rehabbed but many could, and I would cry with joy when one would be rehabbed and go home with a perfect owner willing to carry on the training

My sister owns a cat who was traumatized when it was young. It became a member of her household because it was so good at hiding and avoiding humans. Yes, it hid its way into permanent residency. Only my sister could pet it. No one else, in her household. It only slowly and reluctantly allows said petting from my sister, always on the verge of darting away, even well into adulthood. It fairly recently allowed me to pet it - I have superhuman cat charms. Virtually no cat alive can resist loving me. My sister could scarcely believe this and filmed this to secure the evidence - like filming a rare sighting of the Loch Ness monster.
My dog Zephyr was pretty much left alone, not trained, would only eat kids snacks, and probably beaten because she's hyperactive and gets the biting zoomies. At the adoption place, they told me not to get her. That she has developmental delays and she attacks children. Every once in a while she has a nightmare about those days, semi-wakes up and mumbles about it to me like I can understand before snuggling and going back to sleep.Thankfully those nightmare are getting less and less. She also loves going on road trips and to the farmers market where she tries to convince me to adopt more pets. 😅
You know where's a great place to go if everything in the world seems cruel and hard? The library. A place where you can just go and borrow a book and nobody tries to sell you anything, and you bring it back when you're done, and the staff who aren't getting any kind of commission or anything are always happy to see you and always ready to help. And if you want to just sit around and read whilst you're there, that's fine. If you want to take kids and help them to enjoy reading, they love that. The public library is like a singular vestige of a world that humans could've built, but didn't.
The sky is different every day. I realized yesterday, as I was driving home along my regular commute route, that even if I get tired of driving back and forth along the same road, I can look up and see something completely new. #hope

In my teens, I volunteered to tag nesting loggerhead sea turtles. They were at risk of extinction, but we were cautiously hopeful that turtle excluder devices on shrimp boats would help.
Since then, the number of turtles nesting at the site each year has increased by 8x. The project is still going!

One thing to keep in mind: the DNS system was set up in part because IP addresses are changed every so often, partlyi due to hierarchical routing, and a domain name was intended to provide a stable name for a host. If that host physically moved or if the network topology changed, that host's IP address might have to change as well.
Love the idea! If they allow us to take ip numbers with us, I would even drop my domain names. The trade off is that if I change host my Web Number changes right?
@geep Yeah but there will be forwarding in Small Web sites (at least) so as long as you keep both servers up for a transitionary period everyone’s address books should have time to update. (I don’t see the address books being static things; the forwarding will be part of the Small Web protocol.)
I once thought of this DNS idea with word lists. You make four lists of 256 words each and share those word lists around. You create them so that when you pick one random word from each you get things like "wild horse stacking grass" or "nimble capybara smelling cement". Then we can share easier to remember website numbers by referring to the four words in the shared list. You could even make the browser do the look-ups.

@rigrig You don’t need it on the PSL if you’re setting up servers at IP addresses, only if you’re doing so at domains.
I would expect an IP address to change only if you’re moving hosts in the VPS deployment scenario. And Kitten already supports forwarding. Yarn will also have server migration as a first-class citizen. So that should help mitigate that issue 😀
I like the idea, but how do we keep an IP going from provider to provider? IPs are even more fragile than domains and changing that fact seems near impossible.
Instead, couldn’t a trusted nonprofit (say @eff or ISRG) buy a gTLD from ICANN, become a registrar and rent out domains at (very close to) self-cost with no insane price hikes? Picture what ISRG did with @letsencrypt, but for domains.
