I am okay with disk encryption if the owner of the device enables it themselves and understands at least a little bit about it.

Microsoft enabling it on people's computers without their knowledge is really scummy.

I have full disk encryption on my ThinkPad laptop with Linux and I'm okay with that... because I set it up and I know about it.

@gabriel fundamentally, the issue is that the data requires code execution to access, and that code will require the key material.

A drive that allowed you to approve access levels/modes, and used bio-metric to confirm your identity, I think would be closer to the ideal.

I had the chance to talk with an Offensive Security penetration team, and they more or less told me that, their time in Africa made them realize that, in a physical environment, the person will always be the weak link. (aka rubber hose attack)

And, personally, if I sit down and think about it, I buy very little privacy or protection from encrypting. But, I lose performance, and make the possibility of losing access to my own data much higher.

I'm excited by the idea of an NYC mayor who isn't awful.

When is the last time that NYC had a mayor who was halfway decent?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_…

I was going to post a poll, but I have no idea how far back you'd need to go to get a non-shitty mayor, and NYC has had a lot of mayors. Probably would need more than 4 poll options.

EDIT: This was not a rhetorical question, I genuinely want to know who was the last NYC mayor you think did a good job!

I don't know (I was pretty young when he was mayor, and I'm not from New York City), but I don't remember anything bad about him. I guess that was my point.

I remember a lot of bad things about Giuliani (even before Trump) for example.

Koch seemed to be well-liked by a lot of people and I don't remember any major scandals or bad press. Unlike say Reagan (who I think was President at the time) and him and the whole Iran-Contra scandal.

Koch -- to me as a young ousider -- seemed pretty decent but maybe my views are skewed.

Definitely not Bloomberg. That guy was an ass.

The biggest media failure on the bombing of Iran is that every article should have started with: "The Iran nuclear deal signed in 2015 effectively curtailed Iran's nuclear program until the US withdrew in 2018, under pressure from Israel".

Without this context, any commentary is worthless.

It didn’t take long. Trump has done every last thing the New York Times editorial board warned us about before the November 2024 election.

Do not look away. Do not be complacent.

Call your representatives and senators today. Let them know you expect them to stand up to Trump’s regime. Use @5calls or call the Capitol at +1 (202) 224-3121.

And check your voter registration at votefromabroad.org. Make sure you’re ready to vote in every election.

Natasha Bertrand should be FIRED from CNN! I watched her for three days doing Fake News. She should be IMMEDIATELY reprimanded, and then thrown out “like a dog.” She lied on the Laptop from Hell Story, and now she lied on the Nuclear Sites Story, attempting to destroy our Patriot Pilots by making them look bad when, in fact, they did a GREAT job and hit “pay dirt” — TOTAL OBLITERATION! She should not be allowed to work at Fake News CNN. It’s people like her who destroyed the reputation of a once great Network. Her slant was so obviously negative, besides, she doesn’t have what it takes to be an on camera correspondent, not even close. FIRE NATASHA!

I often crop my photos in an effort to make them more abstract/composed/whatever but that means I sometimes can't even remember what it was a photo of to begin with.

I started looking through uncropped versions of photos and thought it was interesting to see how they started and how they ended up, so I figured I'd share some examples.

These are all color to black and white because they show the biggest difference from start to finish.

I ran across a reference to this book from 1961: the title piqued my interest.

The Myth of Mental Illness: Foundations of a Theory of Personal Conduct by Thomas Szasz

then I found this review of the book from the NYT from back in 1961... (things sure have changed at the old grey lady.)

“The landmark book that argued that psychiatry consistently expands its definition of mental illness to impose its authority over moral and cultural conflict.” — New York Times

I'll be picking this book up.

[…]
Personen wegen des Spruchs „From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free“ anzuklagen, [hielt die Richterin] für die „Kriminalisierung von politischem Protest“.«

You may not know but the UK Govt has a soon to finish consultation on whether & how to enact the 'socio-economic duty' clause of the Equality Act 2010 in England (a duty that some 40 local authorities have adopted already alongside the devolved Govt.s in Scotland & Wales).

At it simplest this is an opportunity to encourages the current Govt. to be more ambitious in its treatment of inequality & poverty, and thus more proactive on its alleviation.

Researchers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory are developing the Buoyant Rover for Under-Ice Exploration, a technology that could one day explore oceans under the ice layers of planetary bodies. The prototype was tested in arctic lakes near Barrow, Alaska.

The puzzling, fascinating surface of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa looms large in this newly-reprocessed color view, made from images taken by NASA’s Galileo spacecraft in the late 1990s. This is the color view of Europa from Galileo that shows the largest portion of the moon’s surface at the highest resolution. The view was previously released […]

This colorized image of Europa is a product of clear-filter grayscale data from one orbit of NASA’s Galileo spacecraft, combined with lower-resolution color data taken on a different orbit. The blue-white terrains indicate relatively pure water ice, whereas the reddish areas contain water ice mixed with hydrated salts, potentially magnesium sulfate or sulfuric acid. The […]

This reprojection of the official USGS Europa basemap is centered at the estimated source region for potential plumes that might have been detected using the Hubble Space Telescope. This view of Cilix impact crater on Europa was created in 2013 using 3-D stereo images taken by NASA’s Galileo spacecraft, combined with advanced image processing techniques. The crater has a diameter of about 11 miles (18 kilometers). This image, which combines a 3-D Digital Elevation Model, or DEM, with original imagery, shows that the […]

This enhanced color image shows cracks and ridges on Europa’s surface that reveal a detailed geologic history. Some ridges, such as the prominent one at top right, develop into long, arc-shaped “cycloids” that may be related to changing tidal forces as Europa orbits Jupiter. The wall of this ridge stands perhaps a third of a […]

This view of Jupiter’s moon Europa features several regional-resolution mosaics overlaid on a lower resolution global view for context. The regional views were obtained during several different flybys of the moon by NASA’s Galileo mission, and they stretch from high northern to high southern latitudes. Prominent here are the long, arcuate (or arc-shaped) and linear […]
