Our old HP printer won't accept cloned ink cartridges anymore. There's a chip that identifies whose ink it is. One suggestion was to take the HP chip and use it on the cloned one to mitigate the high cost for HP ink.
I don't use a mobile phone or tablet (not regularly, at least). I do not "every day carry" a mobile phone, but use my Linux laptop with mobile access point.
I understand that phones and tablets are mobile and more likely to be lost or stolen. Also data recovery off a phone by taking out the internal storage is not the same as with a laptop or desktop computer (physically not possible to remove internal storage).
Those devices are still personal computers, though, and I think the user should be in control of whether the data is encrypted or not and they should be the holders of the decryption keys.
You have backups right? I'd make a regular backup on a non-encrypted disk. Then you're less likely to lose your data because of some encryption key issue.
I would genuinely like to know why it's so hard. What didn't seem to work too badly was using scripts to automatically encrypt and decrypt with PGP. Felt a bit over-engineered but I wanted to use my Yubikey for it, which was cool.
@gabriel fundamentally, the issue is that the data requires code execution to access, and that code will require the key material.
A drive that allowed you to approve access levels/modes, and used bio-metric to confirm your identity, I think would be closer to the ideal.
I had the chance to talk with an Offensive Security penetration team, and they more or less told me that, their time in Africa made them realize that, in a physical environment, the person will always be the weak link. (aka rubber hose attack)
And, personally, if I sit down and think about it, I buy very little privacy or protection from encrypting. But, I lose performance, and make the possibility of losing access to my own data much higher.

Nach und nach, mit den ersten Lichtstrahlen des Tages, offenbart sich das wahre Ausmaß der Katastrophe: wie viele Häuser, Fahrzeuge und Fenster beschädigt wurden, in welchem Umkreis und ob noch Menschen unter den Trümmern begraben sind. Seit dem Morgen des 24. Juni herrscht eine fragile Waffenruhe – allerdings nicht bevor eine iranische Rakete ein Wohnhaus in der südisraelischen Stadt Be'er Sheva getroffen und vier Menschen getötet hat. Unabhängig davon, ob die #Waffenruhe hält, kann Premierminister Benjamin #Netanjahu bereits einen großen Erfolg für sich verbuchen: Er hat das Gefühl der Unantastbarkeit der Israelis erschüttert.
Dieser Krieg, der mindestens 28 Menschen in Israel das Leben gekostet hat, hat Zehntausende, wenn nicht Hunderttausende Israelis, vor allem in Tel Aviv und den umliegenden Vororten, in echte Angst um ihr Leben versetzt. Für einige von ihnen ist es das erste Mal.
Angst hat das Leben in Israel schon immer begleitet – sei es durch Schießereien und Messerstechereien, Intifadas oder „Runden“ von Kämpfen mit der #Hamas und der #Hisbollah. Aber dieses Mal fühlt es sich anders an. Es ist nicht nur existenzielle Angst, sondern eine unmittelbare, persönliche Angst, vor allem im Zentrum des Landes. Die Menschen spüren den Tod in ihrer Nähe, in den Geräuschen explodierender #Raketen und dem Ausmaß der Zerstörung, die nicht abgefangene Angriffe hinterlassen.
Was bisher verdrängt oder durch eine Art Routine bewältigt werden konnte, muss nun direkt angegangen werden. Die Tötungen, die Zerstörung von Häusern und die Unterbrechung des Alltagslebens lassen nur einen Schluss zu: Die Politik Israels macht das Land für seine eigene Bevölkerung unbewohnbar.

I don't know (I was pretty young when he was mayor, and I'm not from New York City), but I don't remember anything bad about him. I guess that was my point.
I remember a lot of bad things about Giuliani (even before Trump) for example.
Koch seemed to be well-liked by a lot of people and I don't remember any major scandals or bad press. Unlike say Reagan (who I think was President at the time) and him and the whole Iran-Contra scandal.

The Swiss Red Cross had access to the German internment camps during WWII and according to their records only 271,301 people died in the camps and out of that number, less than 20,000 were ethnic Jews. So it kind of debunks the whole six gorillion number. I'm not sure if these Red Cross stats are just for the Auschwitz complex in Poland or all of the German internment camps

I often crop my photos in an effort to make them more abstract/composed/whatever but that means I sometimes can't even remember what it was a photo of to begin with.
I started looking through uncropped versions of photos and thought it was interesting to see how they started and how they ended up, so I figured I'd share some examples.
These are all color to black and white because they show the biggest difference from start to finish.
I think I'm mainly posting this to show people that nothing that I'm photographing is particularly unique or spectacular and these things are out there for all of us to find. I think we just need to focus on the most important/interesting aspects to us personally to get the end result we desire.

I do the exact opposite, I switch lenses and framing in real time to capture that weird little chunk of reality and then do zero processing of the image! 300 shots of a friggin twig in a pool of water but ONE of them will be just about right!! #Photography

You may not know but the UK Govt has a soon to finish consultation on whether & how to enact the 'socio-economic duty' clause of the Equality Act 2010 in England (a duty that some 40 local authorities have adopted already alongside the devolved Govt.s in Scotland & Wales).

What happens when the Linux kernel drops support for xorg? Do they intend to fork an older version of the kernel in order to keep support?
Not really possible, since X11 is only built on top of the kernel's graphical interface (same as Wayland). Even if that wasn't the case, the kernel doesn't delete any code that anybody uses (that's why 30 year old programs still run)

Considering the overwhelmingly negative feedback, I am hereby withdrawing this Change proposal. The reasoning is twofold: I have always argued that Changes that are overwhelmingly rejected by the community should not be approved by FESCo.
For the sake of all of our sanity, I'd really appreciate if FESCo could decide on this one really quickly (e.g. putting out a statement) and avoid what could be a most unpleasant flame-fest on this mailing list.
